For all the other ones speed is one of their best assets, who cares about height? Kaliyev isnt a great skater but his goal scoring more then makes up for it
But agility and acceleration isn’t. I’ve had problems explaining this before. The best I can do is to ask you to not think about those guys we have, instead think about the quickest most agile players you know.
In some skating drills big guys just cannot challenge them. Maybe you have to have seen it to understand it, but the difference is actually really big. Someone 6’4 is just not even remotely going to be able to challenge the quickest 5’9 forward in a skating test that is about changing directions and accelerate repeatedly.
And in the game today, the reason the best teams has so many of those super quick guys is because they are able to just take away the time from the opponent.
You definitely have a point in that it’s very square to talk about it as big players=have nots, small player=have’s. Of course. Our kids definitely can play that way really well — but they are not elite at it. And it’s one of the more important areas to be great at. So when we add forwards to our top 6, I definitely think that it’s very important to monitor that they are great in that area.
Does that make sense?
