Very good situation with Winnipeg losing to St. Louis. The pick could be anywhere in the 18-22 range. Perfect room to pick up Bobby Brink or a falling player like Seider or reach for Bjornfot. I would say C. Caufield, but I'm pretty positive he'll go top 10.

You can never have too many centers! ;)

Actually I believe the saying among GMs is that you can never have too many defensemen. And I'm mentioning it only because nobody here wants to draft defensemen.

i took the reply to be a joke about how people want to move every forward we draft to center...

we need badly need top pair dmen especially RHD but bryam is off the table where we pick and there really aren't any other guys that warrant trading up for...but if we don't trade up picking a dman later in the first like last year is highly possible

A lot of us would like to draft Seider, and Soderstrom has a lot of fans too.. York would be good but he should be gone long before the Winnipeg pick. I've seen Bjornfot mentioned a few times and there's a big kid, Kaedan Korczak who could be a good pick in the second round. It's just that when we talk about trading up to the 8-14 range the hope is for someone like Newhook, Caufield, or even Turcotte or Zegras. If there were any chance Byram was there most of us would want him.

Just keep compiling assets at this point. We've got quite a few players that are 1-2 years away. We might have the luxury of taking a big swing on a player that might take a lot of time, but could become something big for us. 3-4 year player. Would come in when we really need some ELCs.

I haven't read every single comment here, but whatever I see is all about centers or at least forwards. Compare the number of comments about, say, Newhook vs Soderstrom.

We can get another top-10 forward prospect next year when most of the top prospects are forwards. But we should really get an RD this year with the Jets pick unless theres a forward available who is head and shoulders superior. Trade up Jets pick to get Soderstrom. Or Kreider+second for Soderstrom and also draft Moritz. Then trade for Fox.

The one thing I think gets overlooked with Zegras is that he’s got a snarl and attitude to him on the ice. He’s not a shy kid and isn’t afraid to have people wanting to go after him.

With time to cook and mature, Zegras’ game has tremendous potential to translate effectively to the NHL ranks.

When I see Zegras, I SEE an NHL player. Sometimes you can’t see that as clearly when observing a kid, even when they’re talented.
The battle level for the USDP kids has been overlooked for a while this year, but that whole lot is tenacious. Despite their size, those kids get right back into battles to try to win pucks back and dominate opposing teams as long as they can, Zegras especially.

I honestly can't see him slipping past 11-13, especially to a team like Minnesota that's lacking a lot in their farm system.

end round 1, would it really be a "reach" for such an all around solid dman like tobias bjornfot ??

kid just seems to have something. every time i iso watch him, he makes the right reads, the little subtle plays and is always pushing the puck up ice with purpose.

i like that kid.

Personally, I'm not opposed to drafting a defenseman, but I like the forwards significantly more. To be perfectly honest, I see a group of defensive prospects who look good to very good, but not necessarily great, or representative of the type of prospect I'd feel particularly inclined to trade up for.

If we don't make any moves, and there's a good defenseman on the board, I can dig it. But all things being equal, I don't know if I see a dynamic, "must-have" defensive prospect that would have me pining for them this far out.

That's true every year. Forwards are flashier and have better stats. They also develop faster. But great teams have great defensemen: look at the Cup winners - Potvin, Coffey, Leetch+Zubov, Stevens+Niedermayer, Lidstrom, Pronger+Niedermayer, Chara, Doughty, Duncan Keith, Letang. You can sometimes get away with just a good, but not great defense in the back, but normally you need guys who are All Stars most of their prime.

Big time defensemen matter. Not just: "he's one of the 62 best defensemen, so he is a first pair guy."

True, but most observers (including @Edge) believe this draft (after Byram) leans heavily towards the forwards in terms of overall talent. As opposed to last year, for example, which was a much more defensively weighted draft (just look at the Rangers' picks after Svechnikov).

There's also the point that 1st line forwards are simply easier to project than 1st pair defensemen. You often see top defenders come from the later rounds, whereas there are only a few outliers among the ranks of the forwards.

Newhook has really impressed me thus far in this tourney. Just as good as turcotte or zegras imo.

Tracey has impressed me caufield of course. Harley as well. York is a great player.

But the guy that really is impressing me is jamieson rees. This kid is a heck of a player.

If the Rangers get the 18th pick, there is a very good chance one of Caufield, York, Seider or Newhook is available.

If any of these guys get picked early it just bumps down one of the people we’re not even anticipating to slide right now. It happens every year.

A guy like Noah Dobson fell to 12th last season.
