I'm not really sure what trading for Kreider does for the Oilers. Draisaitl plays McDavid's LW. I think Draisaitl did a better job playing away from McDavid this season when the Oilers tried to distribute their scoring but in previous season, Draisaitl's scoring dried up away from McDavid. If they went with Kreider-McDavd-? and Draisaitl-Nugent Hopkins-? maybe maaaaaybe if Yamamoto and Pool Party can finally step up they'll have two lines but they really should let those two come up when they are ready. But at the end of the day, Kreider is only signed for 1 year. I'm doubting Edmonton has what it takes to keep Kreider from going UFA. At their draft pick, I totally see them picking one of the top four defensmen. Byram, Soderstrom, Broberg, Harley. One of them will be available. I'm just not seeing it...

You're probably trading Kreider just to get a pick that's within a reasonable range of the top-10. So dealing him is step one of N to get into the top-10 and those teams probably aren't interested in a one year rental to begin with.

In that 11-15 range Philly is probably a non-starter. Minny is probably trying to trade up like we are. Arizona and Colorado might be players for Kreider at 14 and 16.

Florida and Montreal are at 13 and 15 respectively and while they aren't likely players for Kreider, they might be interested in Skjei as both are supposedly looking for upgrades on defense. Montreal in particular has a very weak left-side organizationally. Florida might be in the market for cap-relief as well to accommodate Bob and Panarin.

Getting somewhere in that range is the first step. Then you need to present a desirable enough package to move up. That's the hardest part.

Posted them in this forum because everyone knows Hughes would be #1 for North American players and Kakko would be #1 for European players.

They mention the other players outside of the top 2.

"Of course I could have played even better, at least that's how I felt after some games," Kakko said. "I had all the tools to play better. But if you win gold at the World Juniors, every player on the team can be satisfied. Being a member of a winning team and in a big role, I think that speaks for me."

He sounds like he gets it. He was very good at the WJC but expected better of himself. He wants to be the best.

You get the whole draft list at nhl.com @RangerBoy :)

Anyway interesting to see that Alex Turcotte went up to #4th oa, and Byram #2 on that list so obviously some who notice him recently.

Four for Turcotte isn't terribly surprising, more or less confirms what we've been saying on here for a while.

You figure a "combined" list has Kakko at 2, and possibly Podkolzin at 3, and that puts him right in the middle of that 4-8 range, and most of the centers we're talking about right in that 4-8 range as well.

I really wonder how the Rangers view Newhook, do they group him with the crop of WHL and USDP centers? Him being ranked at 13 probably puts him in the 15-18ish in the draft and just seems like a much easier scenario to move up and grab then figuring out how to get into the top 10

I've often wondered that as well. In fact, he's probably the player I've wondered the most about from the Rangers' perspective.

Those rankings,

Newhook at 13 on North America, with at least two Europeans very likely going before, maybe a goalie too, maybe pushing him to 15-16?

Led BCHL in regular season and playoff scoring. BCHL some other who scored about the same and went on to the NHL, Bozak, Zajac, Kerfoot. Jost may soon join them.

The bust level is kind of high there too.

I honestly don't know, that is a pretty big risk, would probably not overpay to get there, yet if they had that pick that seems to be about the right player.

Not surprised to see Caufield, Kaliyev, rise.

Harley has not been on my radar at all

Dorofeyev, Tomasino, Robertson, Brink all rose too.

I hope they hold him in high regard. He’s one of my favorite prospects in the draft that isn’t on the top tier.

Kaliyev is going to be one of those kids who could be very polarizing on draft day.

I can foresee a landscape where some people absolutely love the goal scoring and shooting ability, and others wonder about his drive and ability to do it with NHL players bearing down on him.

Newhook could be a kid who could sneak into the the top 10, or just outside, or could fall into the 20s. I honestly think if he played in the Q, or was in the same role as some of the kids on the US team, that he gets ranked higher.

I agree, just there are risks everywhere once they get beyond a certain point in the draft probably right past pick 2

Cozen, Dach, Turcotte, Zegras seem to have the least question marks.

Caufield, York, size

Podkolzin is committed elsewhere for a while.

Newhook the BCHL make comparisons tougher, the Q too for that matter. rightly or wrongly.

Not sure about the ceilings for any of the defenders past Byram

I mean we could go on and on, I guess much of it depends on which traits one is looking for, and if they feel that prospect can overcome whatever their weakness may be.

Kaliyev in my opinion is no more risky than any of the others who have some weaknesses too.

I have to say, based purely on profile alone, Seider intrigues me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only RHD with size projected in the first round, no? Presuming his stock isn't being inflated for that reason alone, he could slot very nicely into the team's portfolio of prospects...

I like him and Kaden Korczak who is projected as just outside of the 1st round

Korczak is a guy I was eyeing with Tampa's pick or our second, especially if we go high-octane offense with our first two picks (wherever they may fall).

Let's say by same amazing fortune that Kakko is the pick at 2, and the Rangers find a way to get a Dach/Cozens/Turcotte/Zegras as well. Korczak is definitely a kid I'd love to come away with in the second.

This is literally what my game plan would be
