Ideally, yes. However if Podkolzin is available at 8, there's a decent chance all of the top centers are off the board -- at least the ones we've been talking about around here. At that point you'd need another D other than Byram to sneak into the top-7, or someone to really like Krebs.
Could also, theoretically, pay a lower price, trade into a slightly higher (number-wise) pick and take Newhook.

Personal opinion: only move up to take one of the centers. If we're taking a LD or wing, which are pretty much the other choices (besides Knight) up that high, we're adding to depth which we'll need to use to make a hockey trade – and if we're going to do that, we might as well stay with our existing picks to maximize value in each case, rather than pay a premium to get one guy.

EDIT: now, if NJ throws a curveball and takes Kakko, then take Hughes, and I'm more open to moving up to get the best remaining winger on your board.

You mean a lower pick, right? Higher number, but lower pick

I could easily see the Rangers moving up to, or trading outright for, pick 13 or 14 to try and make their move into the top-10. At that spot you're sitting pretty comfortably as a team with multiple selections in your pocket because:

A. It's easier to move up 4-6 spots than jumping from 20.
B. You're in a better spot to catch anyone in your top-10 who slides a bit.
C. You can stay at that spot and still get a pretty damn good prospect from amongst Caufield, Soderstrom, Newhook, Broberg, Kaliyev, etc.

Hell, if you end up at 14 and don't move the Jets pick, you might get two of those guys listed above, or at the very least be in a great position to make a home run swing at a high-reward player. You're also in a spot where teams are probably calling you trying to get back into the first round and you might be able to get a good young player from another team.

He’s my favorite 2020 prospect and has been since I found out about him.

Leading point scorer as a 16 year old on a team with questionable talent. Nearly a full year younger than Lafreniere. 6’5 at 16!!!!! All the tools you could imagine.
We're a 2020 stud pick away from being a potential juggernaut.

Byfield feels like a Kevin Hayes type of player. Lafrenière definitely looks like a top talent. Perfetti, you got any good highlight comps? The ones I found were kind of underwhelming. I'm liking what I'm seeing from Holtz.

How many offhand RW do we need?

I guess it depends on where they have him rated.

If the Rangers have him third, and they have a chance to come away with two of their three highest rated players, I don't think they balk.

Having said that, I'd be very surprised if Podkolzin is their target.

That Tampa first rounder is not looking good.

That board is going to explode is they get dropped in the first round.

It's a weird scenario where the Tampa pick is looking disappointing, and the Jets pick is looking significantly better than I'd hoped (of course they score two goals in the second).

Glass half-full scenario.

While the thought is the Rangers want one of the centers, they could very well be content to also come away with a Podkolzin or a Byram.

It's also possible they have guy a like Newhook rated just as high as Cozens/Dach/Turcotte/Zegras.

would be very disappointed if the pick was podkolzin

byram and kakko im good.

podkolzin has too many ?? for me. pass.

He wouldn't be my choice either, especially in a world where we're coming away with Kakko.

Personally, I'd love to come away with Kakko and either Zegras/Turcotte, and then find a value pick or two in the second --- especially on defense.

As long as Zibanejad isn’t being moved, go for another top 10 pick

At this point I’m fine with moving Kreider if it means Turcotte or Zegras

Kakko and one of those centers set this team up for a while

Perfetti>Byfield
Shhh, just be patient. People will realize who Perfetti is soon enough. Just wait until the next major tournament takes place with this new Canada U18 crop, and he'll be talked about every where. I caught onto him later this year because I spent most of the year watching the USHL and WHL, but Perfetti impressed me a lot from what I've seen. Not super fast, but he's extremely slipper with how he moves and shrugs off contact, has really good vision and crisp passing, and has really good accuracy on his shot in tight. My only concern is that he looks so small out there because of how he skates, but he's surprisingly strong for a kid that height. He seems like the type that'll end up being really stocky, but strong on his skates who can use his lower base to make strong plays on the puck.

Kreider might get moved in the Draft like Stepan some years ago, and I doubt Oilers need their #8 oa which is mostly centers and Byram is gone earlier in that 2019 draft. But if Kreider extend 4 years I dont really mind and he is 31 when he is UFA.

I don`t know it`s hard to speculate, because Oilers need a defender though so perhaps they will go for Thomas Harley.

NHL Prospect Profile: Thomas Harley
