Please explain how that is wrong. It’s too early in the season to worry about that but how is this incorrect?

The Leafs have the 9th best pts% in the league, 2nd in the division. They are playing at a 108pts pace.

Sakic has kept the same core with no results
He’s made moves in Duchene out, Barrie out, Kadri in. There’s no guarantee ever for a cup but there is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
At the very least, all those other teams have won more playoff rounds. And if it keeps stalling they aren’t afraid to make moves again.

TB 17 points in 13 games. If they win all 3 23 in 16
BOS 14 points in 12 games. If they win all 4 22 in 16

PHI/NJ 16 points in 13 games. If they win all 3 22 in 16

CBS 14 points in 12 games. If they win all 4 22 in 16 games.
Does that not mean leafs are out of a playoff spot?

They are literally playing at a 108pt pace.

That would never be in danger of missing the playoffs.

Problem is Dubas called it that. Really stupid thing for him to say.
Maybe he doesn’t mean for him, maybe that’s directed to the group of players he’s continually laid himself out in front of to protect and deflect negativity from. Maybe what he means by that is that for the boys in the room this is do it die.
Of course he’s going to go to the wall for his guys and say things like I back them to the end, until of course he no longer can.

Can you answer my question that in that scenario I just wrote. If those teams make up those game played differences with wins the leafs are on the outside looking in?

The Leafs have are winning at a clip that would have them in contention for the President's trophy.

If you're designing a situation to make it look like a playoffs bubble record, you're doing it wrong.

Why this scenario could not play out is all those teams play each other and both teams can't win.

Philly plays Tampa/Bos/Tampa next 3 and if they won all 3 already Tampa and Bos obviously couldn't catch Tor

No, he clearly put himself in the spotlight this past off-season. Whether that means management would axe him after another first-round loss is another story (I don't think they would).

I started by sayings it’s early to think about the games played difference but it’s not hard to see the leafs will be in a battle for a playoff spot right till the end. The leafs won’t be playing at this peak the rest of the year and some of those teams behind them will make up the game played difference.

Whoever they play in the first round, if they make the playoffs will be tough and unfortunately a first round playoff exists is again possible. This brings me back to the topic about trusting Dubas and my stance being I need to see playoff results to trust him.

The scenario you created is ridiculous. You're talking about like 6 different teams all simultaneously winning every single game in hand, which isn't even possible given that they play each other. The Leafs are on a 108 point pace, and are not in danger of falling out of a playoff spot.

You’re right all those teams won’t make the difference because they play each other.

yes you’re right! It is a bit ridiculous. I did say at the beginning it’s early to think like this. It is something to keep an eye on as the season goes on because a little slide by the leafs and they’re right in the thick of things battling for a spot.

That’s what I said in the second half of my post. obviously upper brass isn’t going to axe him on saying to the media “it’s do or die.” His tenure will either end or be allowed to continue based on how well he’s positioned the team to succeed short and long term.
He’s the kind of guy who’s always going to take he bullets for his guys, he just needs to see them do that for him on the ice when it matters most.
I still think the do or die is in reference to roster construction and not management.
If they flame out again AND he refuses to make changes then all bets are off, and I think even the most steadfast supporter will demand some change.

Interesting that Barrie out/Kadri in counts as a "shaking up the core" move for Sakic, but somehow the Leafs in that time... haven't changed their core?

I can buy that Kadri out was a core move so we will give him that one. So that comes two seasons ago and we are waiting to see if we are taking the next step from there.
So this will be the 3rd attempt after that move to advance in the playoffs. Failure there and moving closer to Matthews/Nylander UFA might need a more serious move. And a cap style move as many have indicated. The half cap is a problem as well IMO.

He's made secondary moves like Dubas, you chose 3 players that were moved, and 2 of them involved the Leafs...
