Jacques is here for the short term as interim Head Coach; I don't think he wants the permanent job.

Alfredsson is AC because Staios decided that Payne must go too. I wonder if Alfie wants the AC job on a permanent basis. The media release did not indicate it was interim or temporary.

I think Alfie is the AC for two reasons.

One, he's a guy who the players already know and respect. He offers some continuity for the young core, and he's less of an outsider than Martin, who the fans know but coached here before some of our players were even born.

Two, Andlauer came from the organization that hired Martin St. Louis off a bantam bench. I'm sure part of their thinking is to see if Alfie is ready for the permanent HC job after the season.

Yup, that's why Martin is a perfect interim. There's no long term ambition. The new GM can bring in a good permanent coach.

Alfie is a good liaison between Martin and the players.

I would've been optimistic a month ago. But looking at it now, nothing will save us. Dorion screwed this team over for years to come. Zero depth, empty cupboard, shit goaltending, lost picks.
Dorion did screw up the team; however, we do have some very good players such as Tkachuk, Stutzle, Sanderson, Chabot, Zub, Chychrun, Norris, Batherson, Giroux. Agree that our draft picks and future prospects were screwed up under Dorion with his trades. No need for a complete rebuild. We certainly need to fill some holes on D, F & G. Plus we need to get a coach who can teach the players how to play a 200 foot game, with and without the puck, and how to play a strong individual game. A coach who can do that could do very well with this team, make the playoffs too.

DJ is another victim of Melnyk's reign of terror and Dorion's reign of error - he was a dead man walking ever since the team was sold. I'm actually happy for DJ today, he's a good person, and the past few months must have been very stressful on him and his family. I hope he gets a fresh start in some capacity with another team soon, he deserves it.
To an extent I guess, but he's had plenty to with the last two years and we've had to write both seasons off in December.

Cheryl Pounder basically explaining how Martin will bring defense which we didn't have before. That defense will in turn fuel the offense.

Just telling it like it is.

Why did we not fire the guy responsible for defense

The way the forwards play without the puck in our own D zone was horrific. I think Jacques identified the problems to Staios and this change in coaching staff reflects that. I don't think the D played a poor strategy game; for the most part they played their positions but some of them do have some deficiencies (e.g., size, strength, physicality). The Fs were atrocious in our own D zone; I think that reflected DJ's and Payne's coaching approach for the Fs.

Unless he really wants to be an NHL head coach, you can't have Alfie as a head coach because that would mean you'll have to fire him some day.

I didnt want an interim but i was wrong thinking Jacques wouldnt want to do the long hours of film anymore and that he wasnt there to replace DJ as the logical new interim. I guess im ok with him being here for a while as his detail, calmness, and structure is probably exactly what is needed. Alfie though, has now left the realm of deity and becomes a potentially scarificial mortal whose name may get dragged through the mud.

I an hoping for a turnaround, but i cant say im expecting it quickly. Best of luck jacques. And the clock is so much bigger nowadays.

Gord Wilson on TSN 1200, asked to assess DJ Smith's tenure:

"I can't make that assessment, but I think if you asked Brady Tkachuk, he'd give DJ Smith a passing grade."

Does he know that these comments make Tkachuk look like a loser?

I don't think they intended to replace DJ when they hired Martin. I think Martin was an insurance policy in case they had no choice.

It's pretty clear that they gave DJ every chance in the world and never intended to fire him. Which might be the message they want the players to get from this. On any other team in the league, DJ would have been fired weeks ago.

Dadonov and Pinto likely bought DJ time, because ownership allegedly agreed to keep things as stable as possible. They took it to a point where nobody could say they didn't give him a chance to correct things.

About time. Start holding these players accountable. Great news.
I think the problem is that the coaching staff was not employing a strategy and structure suitable to this team's roster. Under Jacques I think we will see a more defence oriented approach being implemented to reduce high quality scoring opportunities by the opponent team. Plus we will see better individual player performance without the puck, taking a man, doing their job instead of the panic we have seen. Jacques will settle them down.

I don't know if you mean this jokingly or not, but that's a legitimate concern I have with hiring all these alums. Look at how that's worked out for Edmonton.
