He's been on the bench the past 2 seasons, only makes sense he'd be given the chance

He's nowhere near as bad as he was made out to be here.

He was given a 95' Camry and told to drive in the Indy 500

Agreed 100%.

It completely insane that people kept pointing to his record as if he wasn't tasked with coaching the team through a deep rebuild.

21 games, that is 1/4 of a season.

Even here, take a look at the last 10 games.. significant improvement. By about game 30 of Martin's time, the team could be doing real well!

All the teams that fired their coaches, are improving and climbing the standing... it is way too early on LA.

It does seem that most of the fired coaches have been justified!!! which should alarm us, as to the value of these fired coaches.

And should piss us off.. DJ should have been gone the same day as Dorion.
And that day should have been a few years ago!

I understand a Camry not being able to keep up with race cars over the length of the race, but I didn’t get stalling the Camry at the start of every race.

Could also be a trial run to make Smith the HC next season.

No surprise. He's been an assistant the past 2 years.
I doubt that DJ Smith will be the HC for LA Kings next season, nor for any other NHL team. He will have to show improvement in his work as an Assistant Coach before he gets the opportunity to be a HC again. There are coaches who have done better than he did as a HC who are not HCs now and would be higher in the lineup for getting an NHL HC job.

For sure he will be HC again at an NHL level

Yeah but the Camry somehow kept pace after we were out of contention, halfway through the race.

For sure he will be HC again at an NHL level

I really hope he does get the job

We could then trade for Fiala or one of their young dmen for cheap

Comment from the 2020-21 season
IMO DJ and Dorion are over their heads for their roles, they are assistant coach and AGM at best

So nice to be making things up as we go. lol I have said that for years.

Weird. Last season, when we had the best special teams in the league, everyone said the opposite: That the assistants were the systems and X's and O's guys, and the head coach was the interpersonal stuff guy.

You're just making things up as you go.

lol what are you even talking about? What stuff am I making up? So DJ doesn't seem great for the interpersonal relations?

Don't worry... same folks are planning on picking the next target of anger.

DJ had shitty goaltending. That was all on him. ;)

It's weird that after a few weeks of DJ being gone, Sens players start to play much more responsible NHL hockey

We're making this up!

The turn-around in our PK is astounding statistically. I tried to look back in this thread as to when Jaque took over the PK but couldn't find it. Last 10 sens have the #1 xGF% on the PK by A LOT (37% next closest is 29%%). xGF is not the best stat for sens especially with brady but he doesn't play the PK. Joseph coming back helps too. I can't wrap my head around how Capuano was the one spared, the isles were so much better when he left and our defense has been a disaster for years when Chabot had SO much potential.

Are you suggesting that DJ was an excellent coach last season, considering we had the 2nd most powerplay goals in the league?

I said "DJ seems great for the interpersonal relations stuff, perfect for an assistant coach"

What in the hell does it have to do with the PP?
Okay, so if the assistants are responsible for the interpersonal stuff and the systems stuff (since you refuse to give DJ credit for our PP last season), what exactly is the head coach responsible for?

A quick tournament where there is not enough time to teach Xs and Os, but just enough time to purely motivate athletes with rah rah speeches and general likeability?

DJ Smith is your guy.
But he can learn the other part with time. Not as easy to learn what he already has.

He’s pretty young still for a coach, I bet he rounds out his skills and gets another HC job.

Probably coach a team we play against in the playoffs and beat us, cause we probably aren’t done paying for whatever crime we have obviously committed against the hockey gods….

Pro side argument:
he was given a very bad team to work with. And a GM that made mistakes. Any attempt at bringing in quality veterans backfired miserably. And no one to stop the puck in his time here.

Anti side argument:
The same mistakes appeared to repeat themselves. There appeared to be little structure in play. I know we over use the words: structure and system.. By they are apt. It seemed like they played shinny.

In the end, we are left with no definitive conclusion on him. We will only know when/if he resurfaces somewhere.

Cameron, Maclean, Clouston, Hartsburg, Paddock... never re-surfaced
Crawford.. never resurfaced, but he had a long history in the league, You wonder if he ran his course.
Boucher may have ran his course as well. Although significant TO success could get him another shot.

It will be interesting to see.

I thought for sure Paulrus would get another gig.

He and Paddock both had some success after being let go. Paul as an assistant and advisor at the NHL level and Paddock as Philly's AHL head coach, then as their AGM, and then finally as a man of all hats for Regina in the WHL for the last decade.
Ya I knew of Paulrus getting an assistant gig at least oncee. Anaheim I think? Just thought for sure he'd have one more crack at things considering what he was initially able to accomplish with a budget squad.

Interesting about Paddock, didn't know that.

Paul went Anaheim -> Columbus -> Toronto

Agreed, though, I thought he would get another shot.
