As an outside assistant !!!

what is an outside assistant?
lt just means he was an external hire, since their new interim head coach was promoted from within.

Of all the available candidates out there, they chose DJ Smith.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a trial run to see if he gets the full time head coach job next year.

Oh, lots of people were. I also have the receipts to prove it.
Something to share with your fellow Kings fans.. Don't expect Dorion to get any kind of management job any time soon.

Give us a heads up when you share them.

Dark horse could be John Cooper if TB missed the playoffs, Stamkos signs in T.O. might be time for big changes in TB. And Cooper is looking for a team that can get his stats into the top of the NHL and the NHL history books on wins and Cups - Ottawa has everything but the goalie and it could be tempting for an experienced coach to take this team on for a good 5 year run

I'd be all over Cooper like a stray dog on a meaty bone if there was ever any chance that he became available.

I just don't even think about it tbh..and I'd wager there would be a bit of a bidding war for him when he does become available. I'd just rather not get too emotionally attached to the idea of it until it becomes even remotely possible for this franchise.

DJ seems great for the interpersonal relations stuff, perfect for an assistant coach

Tells you about the evaluation process of our past GM, hire people in the wrong seat

Cooper has 1 more year after this season.

Tampa is 8-2-0 in their last 10 and in a playoff spot. This is in spite of Vasileskiy's issues this season. Even if they miss the playoffs, I can't see why they would fire Jon Cooper.

Maybe he leaves in 2025 for more money and a team on the upswing. Tampa should still be good for a few more years, but their core is quickly approaching the end of their prime, and a lot of players are locked down with NMCs/NTCs. Career wise, now is his chance to cash in.

Odds are, Tampa signs him to a long and massive contract extension.

Weird. Last season, when we had the best special teams in the league, everyone said the opposite: That the assistants were the systems and X's and O's guys, and the head coach was the interpersonal stuff guy.

You're just making things up as you go.

Don't worry... same folks are planning on picking the next target of anger.

DJ had shitty goaltending. That was all on him. ;)

I can 100% guarantee that if DJ got fired, he would be hired in two seconds elsewhere. Ottawa fans who think he is not up to the task are not aware of his reputation nor the respect he garnered out of Toronto. We got a steal.

Patience.

LOL

He might get hired as an assistant, which is what he's better at, but in no way would he get another head coach position right after.

Let’s put some money on that.
2 seconds as a HC right?

Why are you still here? Shouldn't you be posting on the LA King's forum?

Didn't I press you this past summer or fall to give an opinion and you said you thought DJ should be let go, but Dorion kept?

I could have sworn we had that interaction.

I'm honestly curious what your position is on this at this point. Do you believe DJ should still be here?

Y'all need to face the fact that getting hired by another NHL team mid-season, 10 weeks after getting fired mid-season, is usually a sign of a good, highly regarded coach.

Wasn't the defence shit in TO when DJ was running it? That was a shit team though, not his fault. Wasn't the defence shit in OTT when DJ was here? It's a shit team, not his fault. I bet the teams in the west can't wait for LA to show how shit they are.
