Okay, so if the assistants are responsible for the interpersonal stuff and the systems stuff (since you refuse to give DJ credit for our PP last season), what exactly is the head coach responsible for?

You're either mixing me up with another poster or it is PURE trolling...

Do you give DJ Smith credit for our PP scoring the 2nd most goals in the league last season?

Yes or No
If he says yes, does DJ also get blamed for the results this year?

The reality is all the coaching staff provides input on systems, line combos, in game adjustments ect, the head coach just has the final say in which suggestions from the assistants actually make it to the ice. So was DJ responsible for designing the PP plays that were successful last year, who knows, all we know is he didn't veto them. Assistant coaches typically will be in charge of a special teams unit, but in the end, the head coach has the final call. That means it's typically the assistants assignment to breakdown the oppositions flaws and come with the plan to present to the HC.

Now, in terms of DJ specifically, when he was an assistant in Toronto, my understanding is he was the PK guy. If I had to hazard a guess, Id suspect for the most part he was trusting his assistant when it comes to the pp as opposed to micromanaging it

Scouting is what I want the most. All the scouting! Draft best player available, not by need, all the time with a deep and knowledgeable staff. Who cares if it's a center, left defence, skilled offensively or defensively. Best player. Then we can keep them or trade them. Make astute trades, wire pick ups, ufa signings. It should be the backbone of the organization.

It'll come. I think it will be over time, though, because there are a lot more of those guys and they are less easy to evaluate (compared to the GM & coach, for example). Bringing in the right guys is important but so is keeping the right guys we already have and dumping the wrong ones.

Pinto with a little insight re his POV on the coaching change

Listen on the omny.fm link vs the TSN1200 link which does not seem to be working at the moment.

Shawn McEachern was on the Coming in Hot podcast yesterday, which is a great listen. They spoke about JM and he has total respect for him, and commented that after 5 years in the league it was the first coaching he got; and that there was always a game plan. Basically the best coach he played for.

Also talked about the coaching staff, like Ramsay about angling and stick position that other teams did not due. Made me think the adjustment for some players on the current team was significant.

The interview was posted on its own here:

I was taking a peek at his first few teams, and wow. Look at some of the names he played with. Lemieux, jagr, Gretzky, kurri, Murphy, etc. Etc.

Then when he came to Ottawa he had some of our best players ever. Pretty interesting career for a 2nd liner!

The interview is really worth a listen to, and he talks about that and those teams. Highly recommended.

Back to .500 for JM: 10-10-2 after 22 games. 3 game win streak, first time since Sweden trip in mid-November.

We have not yet won 4 straight this season….
You can look at it that way. Another way is 7 - 2 - 2 in the last 11 games. Things are pointed in the right direction at least based on the last 11 games.
