So how does it work for someone that pays for a physical ad only to have it replaced with a digital ad overlay during games? Should they be upset? Is it sold in tiers now? Do they have to have someone scouring broadcasts now to make sure they aren't getting screwed over? Dunno, as an advertiser I would have a lot of questions.
They pay based on the potential ‘impressions’ from the live crowd. Digital boards are paid based on tv ratings.

How do you know that? I’m sure it’s been addressed by the teams and the their sponsors..

Tim Horton’s pays for a board ads Knowing they will be seen by more TV eyes that arena spectators. If TNT changes the ad and CBC doesn’t, it doesn’t affect them, but if CBC can overlay than that’s a big difference.

How many of these ads were sold long before this idea came about? Maybe some board positions are off limits?

So now they can rotate ads on the boards throughout the game.

I wonder if they’re as intrusive and glitchy as the ads projected on the ice.

Digital ads on the ice, glass and now boards. Regular ads on helmets, jerseys, scoreboard, power plays, penalty kill…

Whoopee!!
From the sounds about how much they will be changing what's displayed, this will be a very annoying distraction.

Hopefully they tweak the “refresh” rate so it doesn’t make me feel like I’m about to have a seizure. Change it after each commercial break or something.

But then again they’ll probably just add more commercials.

Watching yesterday on my office TV the corner ads were shimmering, which was annoying as heck.
The Dewalt ad covered 80% of the boards in black for a second or two, which was very distracting.

On the Wings broadcast last night they didn’t use them.

i'd simply create an add with white background and a bunch of black dots bouncing around willynilly and play that the entire time.

Soon the ads you see on your screen will be tailored to your specific markets. The tech is available right now.

It gave me a headache watching the Sharks Preds game yesterday. Whatever the refresh rate was was way wrong.

I mean jersey and helmet ads are annoying as a concept but not really a massive deal, with this they are actively making the on ice product worse.

They clearly don’t care about the aesthetics of the game anymore. Anything for a few extra bucks.

how many people are going to hate the advertised product/service more if they're taking away from their immersion in the game, though. i think there will be more negative association than positive.

I don't care for it either. I recall one game where the digital ad changed during game play and its too distracting for me.

I was afraid the stupid things would change during the course of play. They are changing more often than I thought they would. I have zero problem with the ads if they only change at the whistle, but I'm not sure how long it's going to take to train my brain to not have my attention deflected every time the dasherboard ads change. The ones with animation make things even worse. Decades of watching hockey on TV learning to watch as many things going on as possible is now being challenged by a moving distraction on the dasherboards while play is occurring. Not a fan at all of this foolishness. It's only been 2 games. Hoping I can learn to tune it out over time.

Digital ads can be annoying. Once they get to the point where you can't tell, it won't bother me. But those ads behind the net, and near the blue line often are not executed very well, and when they aren't synching with its dynamic environment, it's incredibly distracting.
