And I see where the comparison comes to the digital advertising hoardings around football pitches, and while I don't like those, I think these the NHL is using are worse. That's partly because the pitch is larger and so you see less of the digital ads. Plus they're actual digital boards, so while too bright sometimes (at least this is against green grass and not white ice), at least they're sharp enough to not mess with your vision that way.
Exactly. The pct of space on the TV taken up by digital dasherboard ads in NHL games is quite a bit larger than the pct taken up by digital ads in soccer matches. Another point is that in soccer matches the camera frequently zooms in closer to the play on the pitch, so you don't even see the digital ads due to the football pitch being so large. During the course of play in a televised NHL game the dasherboards are almost always visible.

One other thing that is a bit odd that I noticed in the two Preds-Sharks games I watched is that when they switch to the ice level cameras you see the permanent ads on the dasherboards, then when they switch back to the normal camera angle the ads switch back to the digital ads. So not only do you have animated ads switching during play to deflect attention, but you also have the permanent/digital ad switch when the cameras are switched.

Hockey is already a sport that is not ideal to follow on TV due to the constant motion of players and small size of the puck. Adding even more interference with vision by switching bold and bright digital ads makes it even tougher to follow. It was a much better viewing experience in the 70s and 80s when there were no ads on the dasherboards, ice, or behind the goal. Add in that the game was slower. Despite not having monstrous HD televisions it was still relatively easy to follow the action since pretty much everything other than lines was solid white.

So 95% of people will see Pornhub ads?
LOL... at least those might be interesting. My beef is with gambling ads. Christ, I couldn't believe the number of gambling site ads that were on tv during hockey games last season. Frankly it became quite annoying IMO. Ads are annoying enough but to see the same ads over and over again ... well it almost makes me want to tape the game and watch it later so I can skip through all the boring repetitive ads.

I always start games 30 mins late so that i can skip through intermissions and commecials. I usually catch up to the live game around 3rd period. That saves me a good 30 mins of my time. You save even more time doing that for NFL and NBA games.

I think they're great! They're constantly challenging your sense of object permanency and you get another fun mini-game of counting how often they glitch the f*** out when a player in a white jersey hits someone against the boards, or appear obviously fake due to lacking proper shading, puck marks, and not matching the physical ads shown in the other camera angles.

It looks great. Much better actually. People will complain abut every f***ing thing

Cant believe there are people actually defending advertisements, the thing that killed television, radio, and print.

I bought an IPTV box and don't know how people can watch network television. Its even worse than I remember.

Cable television used to be commercial free, because you paid for the service. Inch by inch....

I just turned on the Bolts vs Rags game. The ads are distracting. Hopefully I can train myself to ignore them. Focus boy focus!

I also wonder if the companies that paid for a physical ad on the board are pissed about this or were charged less because they are getting way less tv ad time cause of this.

Yeah, this is an interesting look into the human psyche. I have zero doubt that people are hyper focusing on this simply becausr they know it’s a new thing this year and that’s what is actually making it distracting.

It hasn’t caught my eye once during gameplay outside of the first few minutes of the game.

When nobody moves and the camera is stationary, they are clean and crisp. The trouble is that shit is ALWAYS moving.

They glitched quite a bit, transitioned during play, and blurred pretty bad at times

Hate it

If they didn’t move or transition during play it would be a total non issue for me. But they do. A lot.

Advertisements are what brings in almost all of the money to the television industry.

I get the concept of how it would be distracting. Makes sense.

But being someone who leaves a lot to be desired in terms of the “attention span” category, my own non-issue with leads me to question how much of the issue is because it’s simply a new thing people are subconsciously watching or that it’s actually a visual nuisance. I just would have expected to notice the latter.
