As always when they implement something, the technology seems to be not quite there yet for it to look natural. When players are up against the boards it's a glitchy mess.
I would say soccer isn't as bad since the boards are further from the play than right next to it majority of the time like in hockey.
Didn’t bother or distract me from the game other than that stupid f***ing car popping up and driving down the boards. They move during the play. There's an enterprise car driving around. Players turn into pixels when they open the door and enter the bench. f***ing putrid and embarrassing.
Is there any science that shows this kind of stuff actually works? Forced advertising like this is nauseating and turns me off of the product.
This is literally the reason that I can't watch the NFL. Which is a shame because I used to enjoy it long ago, but it's just a horrible TV product right now. I used to hold hockey up as the gold standard of sports broadcasts because it was mostly about the game on the ice. 90 seconds of commercials 3x a period + easily ignore-able ads on the boards and the occasional sponsorship of like a power-play/pk or big hits or something from a local company. Nothing egregious, not wonderful, but not egregious. It looks really bad. But most North Americans should be used to seeing ads since your most popular sport is basically nothing but ads.

I'll co-sign on this statement. It's super distracting and irritating when they change and move during the play. It wouldn't have been as bad if the movement only happened after whistles.
Yeah, apparently it's going to be on all broadcasts, with ads tailored to each specific market for the local broadcasts (and then tailored to a national market for the national games--which is really the key there, as they look to monetize the boards as much as possible since something like a local hospital ad means little during an ESPN broadcast).I'll co-sign on this statement.
Will this happen on the Bally Sports broadcasts as well?
Or just change them when they are off camera. No reason to require a stoppage in play.I have a simple solution... don't change the ads unless there's a stoppage in play... however short a time period that might be.
Goalie makes a save and freezes the puck... change the ads. Puck goes out of play... change the ads. Offside whistle?... change the ads. There are plenty of play stoppages during the course of a game therefore plenty of opportunity to change the ads.
Changing the ads during a play stoppage might actually get people to read them instead of concentrating on ignoring them which is what I'll be doing during the current state of affairs.
Good idea too. Not sure if that's currently possible (as in who ever controls the ads does that person have control over individual ads in individual locations or is it they all change or none of them change).Or just change them when they are off camera. No reason to require a stoppage in play.
Have the ads rotate as they leave camera vision. Next time the camera pans back, they can be different.
