Digital ads on boards replacing traditional ads

When I started watching hockey at the beginning of the 90's the only advertising you had to see and deal with during the in-game broadcast was

-ads on the boards
-a few ads painted on the ice in the neutral zone
-a handful of ads read aloud by the broadcasters

No big deal whatsoever.

Now in 2022 we have:

- animated/moving digital ads on the boards
- digital ads on the ice in the defensive zones
- digital ads on the glass behind the goals, digital ads on the glass on the far boards
- ads on the helmets
- ads on the jerseys
- advertising banners/graphics displayed on the screen while the gameplay is going on
- 5 to 10 second long video ads in between whistles

They had jersey ads in the 90s as well.
 
For me as long as they work properly and don't animate anything during play I could care less.
 
It's so jarring. Someone on reddit brought up the biggest reason why.

With regular ads you see motion blur, with these you don't but you still see motion blur with the players.

Also the white is just too white, it's almost blinding and does not match the colour of the ice so that's another distraction. Not to mention all the little issues that occur when players are changing or have a leg over the boards. Even when players are up near the boards you can easily tell these ads are being projected by looking at the outlines of the players. It's just a mess and honestly makes me want to watch even less hockey. This sport is heading in such a shit direction, thanks Bettman!

Hey, its not all bad. Maybe you could be an Edmonton fan and your owner can take a stand again putting ads on the jerseys. Then to compensate they can turn around and make your concession stand look like this:

Definitely not to inflation, popcorn and fountain sodas cost them basically nothing, it's expensive at movies too but nothing like that.

I've been pushing fan friendly concession stands on every Devils survey I get as a season ticket holder. They fail to listen and I simply just don't purchase anything at the arena until they do adpot it.

Atlanta has shown that it absolutely works because they made their prices reasonable and fans spent more money than ever before on concessions because they came in earlier because they didn't feel like they were being ripped off and they even spent more money on merch.

Why would there be motion blur on the boards? They aren't moving and the camera isn't panning fast enough to create blur on the boards. The reason the words on the rink are blurry is because there is chopped up ice on top of them, not because of motion blur.

I'm not against digital board ads in theory. They just better be static during play and they better have a quick kill switch like they did last night when they started freaking out.
 
Adds in general are getting annoying. Watching the Habs game last night there were the 4 around the center ice circle, 1 in each corner of the rink on the ice, the helmets and jersey and these rotating board adds...getting fed up. I get it, revenue stream but if you turn off more people from watching games how is that going to help?
 
I think people just like to complain. Oh my it's not a big deal folks.
It's not complaining when its interfering with my ability to watch the puck and the players.

We shouldn't have to settle for this just so they make more money. What is the benefit to us? My experience is ruined.

The ads aren't even effective. Actually I avoid those companies.
Seriously, I don't shop at shitty corporate pizza places anyway.
 
I actually don't care about ads (on the helmet, jerseys, ice, wtv, it doesn't bother me), but the digital ads yesterday literally made me sick. I really hope they fix it because it was very hard watching the game yesterday.
 
This is brutal. Totally distracting, invasive and not implemented well at all. It looks like the beta version. The technology doesn't work as intended. They need to do away with it.

Same, but the problem is they have been animating them during play. It’s so distracting, if they just not changed them or have moving ads, then it’d be totally fine.
 
It looks bad and have been glitchy.

If they don't play them during actual play and only run during stoppage, I could care less. But during the play, it does worsen the watching experience.

The people you need to call, if you are serious about doing something, is anyone PR or Medias,

Call the company PR department that advertise there, tell then how you feel about theirs products being associated with a technology that make you nauseous, and how you resent theirs brand for empowering this.

They wont care much for that one instance, 10 person and its gonna be a talking point in the next meeting. 100. Strait up PR internal crisis management guarantied.

The NHL don't care about you, but they will lend a ear to theirs worried sponsors.
