It is a lot of fun to pick on older folks with their "back in my day" stories but not all of them are BS. We did live through the golden age of hockey. Now they are going to advertise the game to the brink of death. Until they see their numbers falling they will keep going.

These ads are distracting, an eye sore, hurt your eyes. How many great plays will be ruined with this. It's already distracting when they put these ads on the white ice, but they glitch out and flicker and draw your eyes away from the play.

More commercials than ever, every stop in play is sponsored, ads on helmets and jerseys after being sold for a century how much those were symbolic treasures for their cities. Can't say I am proud of the direction of our game right now.

Even if they were just static images it would probably be ok. It is the changing and moving that is totally NOT ok

Seems weird to see commercials after years of seeing commercial in progress . Wrong thread ….

I'll accept that (no changing the ads during play, please) if we can avoid this abomination.

I think that video has to be made by some nerd who doesn’t watch hockey, it’s an example of what the boards can do but I highly doubt it’ll be like that during play. There’s no way they’re that dumb lol
I mean, this league has shown quite a propensity for stupidity in the past, so I'm not going to bet against them this time, either.

Your premise is faulty in thinking that it was advertising money that was the driving force behind games being more widely available.

And this thread makes no reference to commercials during pauses in the game. It’s about them being digitally plastered on the boards. There aren’t pee breaks that avoid those.

the original post I was replying to was about all advertising, which includes commercial breaks…it wasn’t about a specific type of advertising or excluding certain types of advertising…

And no, there isn’t pee breaks to avoid the ads on the board…but there is a puck on the ice to watch to avoid the boards…

Did you see the clip of what these ads look like?

Obviously I’m following the puck and players but it’d be a much better viewing experience if there weren’t animated ads behind them and on the ice surface.

Hockey is a fast game. The puck is small. Watching it through a minefield of ads is not an improvement.

What's the difference between a physical ad on the boards, or a digital one superimposed over those same boards?

I didn't care about the helmet sponsors, or the jersey ads. I certainly don't care about this.

The digital ones are dynamic. It enables more companies to have their ads displayed on the boards.

For the high budget companies, it enables them to have their logo all over the boards for a few seconds (which is not possible currently).

I remember how they used to change some of the ads during the intermission, this automates the process and makes the changes more frequent.

With the possibility to have so many companies represented in each game in all sorts of ways, the NHL and broadcasting companies can turn a greater profit by increasing demand for each second of advertisement available during play.

More visibility = more profit = higher price.

It’s a genius move from a financial and marketing standpoint, but it will be annoying as f*** for the fans like us watching at home.

So how does it work for someone that pays for a physical ad only to have it replaced with a digital ad overlay during games? Should they be upset? Is it sold in tiers now? Do they have to have someone scouring broadcasts now to make sure they aren't getting screwed over? Dunno, as an advertiser I would have a lot of questions.

Ok im confused. Are these digital displays actually there for all to see even the players? If so , wouldn't the ads changing during live play be a distraction for the players?

If it's just for TV, then what does the people in the arena see,? Clear boards?

Good luck not being distracted by ads such as these while looking for a puck.

OK, the NHL is really starting to push what's acceptable to fans lately.

So, I started watching the NHL around 1986, and there were no ads on the boards at all. That was obviously great.

When I was 10 or 11 (c. 1987), they started putting ads on the boards. It's disgusting, I think, but it was something you could at least get used to. Mind you, I recall watching a game -- I think it was Edmonton @ L.A. in about 1989 -- and some of the ads pasted on the boards fell off during the game, resulting in Esa Tikkanen falling over the ads and landing on his ass... twice, as I recall. (Fortunately for the NHL, he wasn't injured.)

Since last season, the NHL"s enthusiastic obsession with gambling has made the League look very bad, in my view. Opinions will vary -- I personally view gambling as the lowest-level pastime of those challenged by evolution, but anyway the NHL clearly views any means necessary to profit as acceptable. (I honestly would be less offended if they advertised prostitution.)

So, now, we've got ads on some teams' jerseys and now these distracting digital ads on the boards. And yes, they're damn distracting. I notice them every single time I watch a game, and they bother me.

I've more or less decided to subscribe to NHL.com for streaming of games this season, but the more of this type of news I hear, the more I start to question my decision. If this trend continues, I think I'd rather just rip the NHL off by illegal streaming rather than pay them money. It's really up to them.

They pay based on the potential ‘impressions’ from the live crowd. Digital boards are paid based on tv ratings.
