All I know is that in the couple of games where I've seen it used, it very very much distracts from the play on the ice. The constant barrage of advertising is making the game hard to watch and there will be a breaking point where I just give up completely on the sport. It's the main reason I can't watch football and if it continues it'll be the main reason I can't watch hockey.

What they really need to do is pass out hand held ad signs and make fans wave them around as a stipulation of being in the seat. Let those freeloaders in the stands be productive and work for their night out. Imagine the potential ad revenue! I would hope that the NHL would have talked to other leagues with such ads on security. Major European soccer leagues have digital boards and they have way higher viewship than the NHL. I would imagine if they're smart (that's the lynchpin here) the controlling computer wouldn't be online during use.
