Oh, I'm inclined to agree. But if he is re-signed he won't be getting much anyways, so it doesn't really address the cap crunch.
Newhook will most likely still be getting ~$2-2.5 mil. Too much for what he brings.

There's a chance he breaks out or figures it out, but i'd rather get something of value back and replace him with a better player in free agency/trade.

Colorado appears cap strapped next year. Need 9 roster players and $13M in space and Bynum an RFA. After signing him you pretty much are looking at $1M contracts.

with Toews having 1 yr of term left you aren’t getting some high prospect or some decent 2C with term/ team control. More like a player for player deal that is close to money and term.

The f***…Unless I’m crazy, Toews is no where close to one of the best 5 defensemen in the world…

Closer to Top50 than that.

And no, a team wouldn’t trade a ‘Top5 dman’ in his prime with their contention window wide open, for cap reasons.

8th in norris voting last season. 11th the season before that. so not top 5 by any means but better than top 50.

He’s really been an ideal pairing with Makar. This is often discussed on the Avs board. What will be Toews’ ask? And do they trade Girard instead?

The OP dumps on Girard but his contract is team friendly in that Girard can be a top 4 D for a lot of teams.

How can they keep Toews and find a new 2C even after dumping Girard?

That’s fair but projecting him forward, I’d have him more in 30-40 range than even top 10.

If the Avalanche are trading him, they clearly don’t value him as even a top10D despite what their fans say

Valid question. They once had ROR but they traded hum because he wanted too much money. They didn't trade him right away though. They kicked the can down the road as long as they could.

Then they were hoping Jost would step in. Didn't happen.

They then traded for Kadri who was on a team friendly deal. Its likely they were willing to give Kadri a raise but no one really knows how competitive their offer was. And they possibly could have signed Kadri but they did sign Manson. If the D group is healthy, they're like having an extra forward. But they haven't been healthy so the 2C is getting a lot of discussion.

It's possible they either don't prioritize it or they have a limit that they're willing to pay. They're always filling that role with younger/less expensive guys. They likely see Rantanen as the C of that line even when he's RW. And so it seems very possible they'd go with a 3Cish player (like Compher). It may seem crazy but they may not be super focused on someone unless it's a team friendly deal.

Fehervary + McMichael?

Fehervary becomes long term Siegenthaler like partner for Makar, can probably be signed cheaply. McMichael becomes 3C then 2C behind MacKinnon, also could be signed to a cost controlled contract. Too much for one year of Toews but not sure what Colorado could send back.

Toews-Carlson/Sandin-Jensen/Alexeyev-TVR should be a substantially upgraded D from this year.

If I'm the Avs though I try to sign him to an 8x7.5 deal and give him Girard's money
For me (Avs fan) i agree

I love Avs fans. Makar is the best d-man in the world. Byram is a #1. Toews is a #1. Girard a top pairing d-man.

You guys are hilarious.

Girard is not really playing at a top pairing level right now but he certainly has in the past.
Anything else is just your bias showing.

Makar just won a Norris and a Conn Smythe and I doubt anyone would really argue with him being the best d in the world (or atleast in the mix). Toews has been rated a top10 D in the league last season by quite a few different people and outlets. He IMO is not as good this year but still comfortably one of the better Ds in the league and could easily be the #1 on quite a few teams.

Byram might not be a #1 D yet but thats mostly due to usage and injuries. He was arguably the best defensive D during a cup run where the Avs went 14-4 and certainly projects as a #1 D (if he can stay healthy) going forward.

We basically shredded the league last year and our biggest strength by far was our defense. So why do you think its so outlandish that the Avs have a crazy amount of talent on D right now?

I even disagree with the post you quoted. Toews has serious value but with 1 year left on his deal, the return will not be enormous unless we find a sucker like Bowman back during the Seth Jones saga but thats unlikely.

Certainly any claims along the lines of Byram being a #1 right now or something of that sort are absurd, but I think we should be able to say the Avs have an excellent defense and the following is true: Makar is arguably the best defender in the league and certainly sits in the top 5 in any given season right now; Toews is clearly a high-end top pairing defenseman; Girard is a pretty good second pairing defender; and Byram, while currently a spotty/erratic second pairing defender (in part because of his lengthy missed time due to injuries) certainly has the potential to be a quality top pairing defender. Whether he reaches that potential is another question, but it certainly has to be built into his value. And then Manson, when healthy, is a pretty decent second-pairing defender as well.

If the Avs do move Toews this offseason, which is the topic of this thread, due to the coming cap press and the rather desperate need to acquire cheaper forward talent down the middle then I have to think there'd be a lot of suitors. He's 29; eats 25 minutes a night on the top pair; is going to eclipse 40 points this season; had 57 points in 66 games last year; and in last year's cup run played 26 minutes a night and had 15 points in 20 games.

Byram is overrated by Avs fans. The rest is all simply true, although Girard hasn't played like a Top pairing guy thus year...

There's a reason we completely torched the league last year and won the cup despite getting below league average goaltending.

People will hate this one but I'm on the side of resign Towes, move Byram for a center prospect, and run Toews-Girard as your top two LD for the next 5 years.
I could see it.

People will hate this even more: trade Manson.

Two second round picks.
What kind of idiot would you have to be to trade Toews for 2 2nds?!
