No cap space to do that and DT is older
Avs can afford Toews trade Girard.

If Nurse and Seth Jones make $9mm+ per year. And we all likely agree Toews is a better player than either of those two… what does Toews make in his next contract?

He could sign something like $8.25mm x 8. And the Avs can’t afford that. Unless Landy is LTIR and basically retired. In which case, we give Toews Landys contract plus a few bucks per.

And who knows what Byram will cost. He’s scoring on a 23 goal pace over 82 games as a 21 year old with hardly any PP time. That’s insane. Suffice to say, Byram will need a raise.
The Avs should trade Girard and resign Toews Eric Johnsons contract ends this year they can use that for Byram they can make it happen.

Mack is taking up all EJs space. Mack makes $6.1mm this season. He’ll make twice that next year.

The Avs won’t have the cap space to resign Toews. It’s as simply as that. We all wish they did. But that’s not realistic.

A team with prime Makar, MacKinnon and prime Rants with a good goalie is a bubble team? With Byram emerging as a star. You must be joking.
If Avs fans are saying the truth, losing Toews is the start of the decline of that roster. Arguably started already losing Kadri, but losing Toews is what will move them into bubble team territory.

Avs need to do everything they can to resign him, Toews is literally the perfect partner for Makar. Just like Seabrook was the perfect partner for Keith, even with Seabrook involved in trade rumours for years during his prime, the Hawks found a way to keep him because he was bread and butter with Keith.

Think of Makar and Toews on the same level. If they want to win another cup within the next few years, they need to keep this pairing together.

Byram is a stud too though that is easily a #2, I think it will be up to Toews and whether he will take a pay cut to keep the "band" together.

Normally I would agree... But given what they did this year(Or didn't do more accurately), I think its certainly possible they're on asset management mode already and not in the go for it mode anymore, unfortunately.

Avs are at 70m next year with just Byram to resign and get a 2C and bottom 6 forwards, half of which will probably be cheap RFAs/prospects and the other half can be picked from PTOs/waiver wire. If they move Girard for a 2C making about the same then they're completely fine. The year after they could move Lekhonen to accomodate Toews and if they smartly replace him with a Hagel/Jeannot/Paul type get like Tampa has been doing they'll be fine

They're at $70M with just 13 players signed.

That's 10 roster spots left to fill and just $13M in space to fill them.

That isn't anywhere even remotely close to enough space.

14 counting Francouz, who could also probably be traded and replaced with a 1M backup if they want to penny pinch. With Malgin and newhook both looking like they should be a hair over a million maybe 2 for Newhook, Nieto probably able to be brought back for <1M, Ben Meyers <1M, and tons of Cogliano level players they could add floating around for league minimum to flesh out the lineup. Only expensive spot is if they get a legit 2C but they might just try to wing it again and pay for one at the deadline
