I think it would be foolish to trade Smith without giving him a 3rd season as a Devil.

Even Will Butcher got 4 seasons to prove himself.

Graves I'll keep to start the season but he could we gone come trade deadline next season. That's when we may look at Okhotyuk to replace him long term. It wouldn't hurt Okhotyuk to spend another season in AHL next year.

Defenseman for next season should start as follows:
Graves-Hamilton
Sigenthaler-Severson
Smith- Free Agent/Trade
Bahl-Walsh

I'll have Bahl as the 7th dman that will be full time with Devils next season and Walsh as the 8th dman to start in AHL but taxi into NHL when there is injuries.

We should get a RHD as a trade/signing to partner Smith. Someone like Josh Manson could be good and he's talented enough to play 2nd pairing if the team elects to not re-sign Severson.
A trade option is viable as well if we use one of our surplus winger such as Zacha/Kuokkanen/Johnsson to swap for a RHD.
But to be fair, we are still paying for that decision both figuratively and literally. People were starting to come out hard on the "trade Butcher" train a year or two before it happened, so it might be a bit of "fool me once" type of thinking.

The fact that if we trade Smith now, while he still has some value and will still have hard choices to make (hopefully) on D within the next year or two makes it that much easier to stomach.

Ofcourse this was overrating from my side, but still. I had(and have now) my own different conditions. And Nikita`s first game is lookin better than Holtz. Do I think Holtz has better ceiling - ofcourse. But I respect floor too. And like I said before - I`m ok to change my mind when I have new info and new context.
But I was very high on Okhotiuk and nothing changed. He was very food this season in Utica for his role. I really like his combo of skills. When we have a lot of talented skill playes, guys like Okhotiuk could really help organisation to be not only scoring team, but winning team too.

We should trade Smith. We have Hamilton, I think we will sign Severson and Luke Hughes will join the team next spring. Smith is on the ELC and some teams with cap problems can think about their future. Or Arizona, who have tonns of picks. Smith price is still high and we don`t need to wait Butcher`s situation, or even situation, where he will play good enough and will ask salary increase, and we or a lot of potential new teams will not find a way to pay for it. This is exactly the best moment to trade him. The best-best one was year ago, but who did listen Guadana, everybody loves 0.5 ppg from "bamby-defenseman".

And I don`t think that time to trade Graves has come. Siegenthaler-Smith-Bahl\Okhotiuk or even Siegenthaler-Bahl-Okhotiuk is very risky defensive left side. If anyone will hurt or struggle, like Smith struggle this season or season before(don`t tell me he was good year ago, he wasn`t. He produced - yes, but he wasn`t good defenseman year ago). Siegenthaler-Graves-Bahl\Okhotiuk is good enough left side of defense and if both Nikita and Bahl will handle, we could think about trade of Graves. But for now it is too early.

Yeah, I've been a big Okhotiuk fan for a while. I remember back to training camp in 2020 (or Jan '21, whenever the camp was.) I thought he looked fantastic all around, I was really surprised that they just sent him down without much fanfare.

They tried to get him Fitz must have felt the ask was too high....The risk was high and still is with Tank we don't need him at his age and what he will cost....Glad Fitz passed on him wasn't meant to be....

I don't understand the obsession with Tarasenko. He was a huge risk at the time. Why not be upset that we didn't sign Duclair? We could have gotten Jared McCann for cheap and exposed McLeod. This stuff happens all the time.

The other thing is he’s on a two year deal. Even if he came here and raked it wouldn’t have done much for us, he wasn’t making a 35-point difference in the standings. So then you either have him for one more year of possible consequence or double down on the risk and resign him.

Probably could have gotten a monster return at the deadline with full retention. $3.75 million AAV for two playoff runs of prime Tarasenko might be worth two first round picks. But who knows, every trade deadline these days is more baffling than the last.

The Devils really do not have $4M in cap space to waste next season, though. Things get awfully tight if they hope to upgrade in net and at wing, while also signing Jesper Bratt to a long-term deal.

I truly feel that this whole coaching staff needs to go. Our guys, just simply do not play the right way.

These guys are coming up from the AHL and are producing for us.

We also need to get rid of Sevo and Zacha. Sevo is the Palmieri on defense. Zacha just looks really tired of being a devil and can you blame him?

Yes, goaltending is the biggest issue. But, when you are constantly making blind passes in the neutral zone and blind passes into the slot (that goes for all our Dmen).....your goalies are going to get lit up in the NHL. It is the end of the season so I dont care.

Just management and the coaching staff really are not great. We sat Bratt for not playing that well, Sevo was out there costing us games and never got sat. What message does that send to the room? Especially to the younger guys. Not taking away that they guy can score, but his decision making and passing is way overrated.

Even if Smith was playing “decent” , I just don’t like the fit with him . I feel we need a player like Bahl / Okhotiuk / Muk more do than Smith . We have Hamilton Severson and some guy named Luke Hughes coming that are more than enough for offensive D . That’s Smith’s. bread and butter but that’s about it . One of the kids can provide more of a needed defensive game plus have some nasty in their game .
I think we move Smith and I hope we do . There is simply no room for him unless all of Bahl / Ok / Shakir / Hughes all bust ….

I don't get this though, was the assumption going into the season that we would be looking at a bottom 5 team again?

Thought they would be pushing for a playoff spot and he definitely could have made an impact if that was the case.

Also, as mentioned, moving him at the deadline would have brought something nice in return.

It would not be foolish at all. So you would rather give him another season when he is clearly not a fit & then his trade value falls off a cliff to the point where we get nothing of value for him? That would be the more foolish move. There is absolutely no reason to be forcing Smith into a lineup just because of his draft status. Especially when we got not 1 but 2 defensemen who look better then him. Why should Bahl be the 7th defenseman when he has be night & day better then Ty? Smith should not be getting preferential treatment. He does not deserve it at all. If Bahl was drafted in the 1st round & Smith drafted later on we wouldn't even be having this discussion. When we are trying to be a playoff team no one should be handed spots just because they were drafted high. Your either good or you aint.

bahl and okh are different defenseman than smith though - in theory, smith would be a PP guy and more offensively minded, i thought?
Thats the point. Smith has no spot on our powerplay. Between Hamilton, Severson, and Luke Hughes coming up really soon Smith doesn't have a chance to sniff our powerplay. Therefore Smith is completely redundant. Smith also doesn't bring anywhere near the amount of offence for the amount of goals he lets up. In order to a good offensive dman you need to score more points then you give up. Bahl is much better in Smiths spot and Smith should be traded before his trade value jumps off a cliff. One more bad season & thats a wrap for Smith.

You’re just assuming he’s bad again next year. He stunk this year, but it’s amazing that he went from a potential core player to literally useless and must dumped after a single season.

I like how Bahl has looked. It is not hard to imagine Smith being better than Bahl next year considering he’s been better than him at every level of hockey before this season.

Its not even about if he's bad or not next year. When we have an abundance of LD prospects (all of which are knocking on the door, and bring other elements that this team desperately needs) I just don't see a need for Smith. If he loses his spot in preseason to Bahl or Okhotuik then Smith loses all his trade value & we won't get anything for him. It would just be the smarter move to deal him now while he has some value. Next year is make it or break it for Smith because Hughes comes up the year after. There is also 0 chance of Smith getting his PP time when he's stuck behind Hamilton, Severson, Luke Hughes. Smith brings nothing to the table that we aren't already getting from our other dmen.

Yes that’s a big part of why it may make sense to move smith. We don’t need him to run a powerplay and he doesn’t really fit the type of defensmen we need or Fitz likes.

I just don’t buy this line of thinking. Again, this year he just absolutely sucked and didn’t do anything well, but I want dmen that can move the puck on every pairing. Especially considering that #3 right handed dman that will be on the team next year will more than likely be a stay at home guy or just a plug.

So what do we do with Bahl & Okhotuik if we are gonna force Smith into that top 6 role? Do we just not play them even though both are clearly better? Or do we let them beat Smith for that top 6 spot & watch as Smiths value tanks harder then Netflix's stock?

It’s as much if not more about his fit on this team than him having a bad year. There really doesn’t look like there’s a role for him in this team right now or in the future. His defensive game isn’t good enough and it wasn’t last year in his exciting rookie season. He’s an offensive powerplay guy. But we have other guys who can run the powerplay and Luke Hughes on the way. He was better than Bahl in juniors because of his offensive skill and puck moving. Bahl was better defensively but didn’t have as much potential. Bahl has looked better than Smith and he’s more of a fit. I also really like what Okhotiuk brings and he started strong. They both just make more sense as potential second and third pair D alongside the guys we already have.

There’s two options:
1. We trade Smith and run Siegenthaler, Graves, Bahl, and Okhotiuk next season. There’s obviously the risk of looking bad if Smith starts doing really well somewhere else which could happen but I think it’s highly unlikely that he ends up being a top pair D or anything somewhere else.

2. We don’t trade him and we let him and the other two battle it out. With this option they have to be willing to keep Smith out of the lineup or even send him down to Utica if one or both of the other two are doing better. I don’t know if the Devils would be willing to do that and as someone else mentioned it would tank his value.

I think they should consider option 1 and maybe he could be part of a move to acquire a top 6 winger or goalie.

There’s also a third much less likely option.
Trade Graves before the last year of his deal and run Siegenthaler, Smith, Bahl, and Okhotiuk. Would only do that if they’re really confident in the young D.

I get what you are saying about Smith having been better than Bahl at every level prior to the NHL but I think now it might be at least possible that what made Smith better is not true anymore at the NHL level.
Evertone is bigger ,faster , stronger and maybe Bahl‘s game is better suited for the NHL? I’m not saying Bahl is outright a better Dman than Smith . I’m saying that it is at least possible that Bahl becomes a better NHL player than Smith , and past play in different leagues should not mean Jack-shit now. Yes we should give Smith the benefit of the doubt for now because he was a dominant player in Jr. but moving forward , if Bahl out plays Smith , then Bahl or any other prospect should play ahead of him regardless of pedigree .

Most of our defense can move the puck though. Hamilton, Severson, Graves, Smith. Subban won't be here but he's also a puck mover.

Smith isn't a good skater and he's terrible defensively, so he can only justify his position in the lineup if he's producing points. But he's not going to be put in a position to get points because Hamilton and Severson (and eventually Luke) are all going to get PP minutes over him. And he only has 15 ES points in 63 games this year.

His skill set is quite redundant on this team and I think a lot of us are worried he's going to get Zacha'd, hung on to for far too long while we wait for the flashes to turn into a breakout that never comes. Next thing you know he's 24 and sucks and no one wants him.

I don't want to give up on him, but it's just reality. Either you think he's a long term piece or you don't, and if you don't then it makes the most sense to trade him now.

Okhotiuk and Bahl are capable puck movers though. Smith at his best is obviously better at that but he’s not as good defensively. We don’t want or need a defensively poor puck moving defensmen on our 3rd pairing. The only time that ever makes sense to me is if that guy is running a powerplay.

I'm leaning towards keeping Severson around over Graves, he's made me crazy over the years but he's had a really good season. Graves started very well but has been pretty meh for a while.

I'm pretty meh on Smith as well, too small, slow, doesn't PK and doesn't have a spot on the PP. I'd try to flip him for something to help upgrade the forwards. With Hamilton, Severson, and Hughes on the way we don't need him.

With the emergence of Seigs and if Bahl can stick and Okhotiuk steps up we could have some nicely balanced pairs. All big dudes with great reach that can skate and move the puck.

We'll know a lot more after next season on how this all shakes out.

He can’t really get Zacha’d because we’re not gonna have any room at LD. He’s either gonna have to perform or be in the AHL pretty soon.

Agreed. I think this will also apply to other young players we have . Eventually hard choices will have to be made. Only so many roster spots amd spots that require a specific skill set . With Holtz Foote Thompson Gritsyuk Stillman plus others , eventually we will have to decide if they are core or important pieces we can use or if we need to move them for different assets. Timing amd deciding who is the best fit for different roles is the tricky part.
