True, but the Sharks know we most likely aren't switching to a plan B anytime soon so it makes sense for them to wait as at worst they still end up with whatever we are currently offering
Do we really have to have a plan B? Arent we in a position of power?

We have the super young and good-now team! We can afford to not acquire Meier and entertain free agents or future deals.

The Devils biggest enemy going forward is cap space! No need to overspend on assets just to fill up the salary sheet!

Lawson Crouse would be one of mine, but not sure everyone's thoughts on him here. But Arizona would want a haul also so not sure.

I probably didnt word myself well

I meant Meier shouldnt be out plan A! Plan A or plan 1 should be to acquire good talent to help us short and long term.

Plan B or 2 should be if we can acquire cheap talent for this years playoffs!

But maybe Im arguing semantics idk. Luckily Fitz knows better than me!

My Personal Plan B if another team gets Timo.

I really haven’t planned anything after that.

I’m returning to what I wanted couple years ago.

Bunting produced because he played with good players, but I like what he brings and we have few good players to put Bunting on their line. If devils will miss Meier, I would hope they will sign Bunting on reasonable deal.

I had a revelation:

Does Bo Horvat’s contract further screw Bratt’s ability to request a higher AVV?

I honestly think Bratt should get the Fiala’s contract 7.85AVV. I thought a lot of you were crazy saying Bratt contract should be under 8AVV but a (PPG) center who was on pace for 50 goals only got 8.5.

Bratt is a valuable winger but the 9mil AVV seems to be reserved for 1-2 defenseman and 90-100 point players.

I was (and still am) one who believes Bratt was after 8.5 last season and is trying again to get that this season.

This is totally gonna end up like Gaudreau and we’re gonna get our hearts broken
Not so sure I believe the hype I could be wrong but Canes need to add a second line center imo and after next year have to sign Aho....Meier fits NJ more and I think this is a classic build up the hype to get NJ to overpay.....If Meier gets to the summer still in San Jose he will not get as much....As far as him being traded without a contract that won't happen Claude L will push for deal to be in place....If Grier is asking for the moon move on....Get Barbashev or make an offer for Buch....

I doubt Meier avoids us because he has a fetish to play for his boyhood team later on his career. People need to understand that he randomly picked CBJ because the Devils were never trading him to Philly 3-4 years into that contract. Flyers have had a big trade history with Columbus with guys like Atkinson, Carter, Voracek. Gaudreau is 100% not finishing that contract in Columbus, I'll put money on it.

Atm, Holtz, Shara, Muk, 23 first and 2nd in 23 and 24 if that’s what it takes. If CAR offers Jarvis we might be forced to include Mercer who I really don’t want to trade but would probably be worth it for Meier + would get some of those picks and added prospect/s out of the deal.
That's too much and including Mercer is insane that's a step backwards....I'd like to get Timo but most teams can't and if Canes offer Jarvis he is going to be a Cane....Can't see them offering Jarvis.....

We are consistently getting guys who are 21-23 getting 7-8M on their second contract straight after their ELC - Hughes, Norris, Cozens, Robertson.

The league is changing, comparing current players to deals that were signed +3 years ago is apples to oranges. Bratt is a top-30 winger in the league, and if we don't pay him then we're going to lose a homegrown point per game player for nothing and will need to spend assets to replace him.

Yeah if they offer Jarvis, Fitz would be right to hold off on offering Mercer. Not worth it. As much as I want Meier, I’m totally fine adding a lower key role player and keeping all of our top assets for another day.

To San Jose for Meier:

Holtz
2023 1st
Okhotiuk
Johnsson

That's my prediction folks.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to a deal along these lines with Okhotiuk being interchangeable with a number of players/prospects along the lines of Bahl/Sharangovich/Vilen, etc. Maybe even someone like Walsh & another prospect, but I don't see Muk/Casey/Grits being part of any deal on top of Holtz + 1st as a base.

Mark Stone is probably the most comparable recent deal - he also essentially came with an extension and was probably even more valuable than Meier as they were similar in age at the time he was dealt, Stone was over a PPG player along with being phenomenally defensively as one of the rare wingers that gets a lot of Selke votes. He only returned Brannstrom (15th overall pick from less than 2 years earlier) and a 2nd rounder.

I posted this list on the trade board as well, but it's Wheeler's top 50 NHL drafted prospects - Holtz is still fairly high on this list at #22. The top 2 Hurricanes prospects are a tier below at #38/39. I know a lot of people are down on Holtz, but I still think he's a more attractive piece that what Carolina has to offer. I guess that changes if they decide to include Jarvis, but I don't think they do that - just like how we wouldn't want to include Mercer. Both young players on ELC's that are already key contributors in your lineup. No reason to include guys like that already in the lineup when SJ is gearing up towards the future.

I don't think Buffalo is a serious contender for Meier. The most we've heard about them is that they were kicking the tires. Could they have a better offer? Absolutely. If they want to offer Quinn & a 1st that would blow us out of the water. I don't see why they do that though. Quinn is a fantastic prospect and that 1st is going to be a mid-round pick (currently they're slotted for the 14th pick). The Athletic only has them at a 5% chance of making the playoffs, so why would they load up and trade for the top player available for an almost non-existent playoff run? Furthermore, would Meier even want to sign an extension in Buffalo (not trying to knock the city, but it's just a reality)? They're building the team the right way - no need to deviate and trade two major assets at this stage when they should keep building on what they have and defense is probably a bigger need.

I can't recall any top player being dealt in recent history where it looked like the team dealing him came away with a great package. It looked like Tkachuk could've been that (though in a completely different scenario with veteran players coming back over picks/prospects), but looking at it today that deal does not look great for Calgary. Fitz should hopefully have a hard line that he's not going to cross - certainly Luke, Nemec & Mercer should not be part of any deal nor should we be adding guys like Casey/Muk/Grits on top of Holtz/1st. Add more picks and lower level prospects if that's what it really takes. I have a feeling that we likely have the best offer out there but that Grier is waiting to see if he can squeeze out more from other teams. I'd say we probably have a 70% chance of landing Meier but if another team blows us out of the water so be it. This is year 1 of a window that should hopefully be open for a long time - we don't need to go all in right away.

Palat with 6 points in his last 5. He has clearly started to shake off the rust from injury/not playing.

Now 13 points in 20 games…yeah very small sample size, but that’s about a 55 point pace, which is exactly what is expected of him, or even a little more, in these immediate first years of the deal.

Even when he’s not scoring, his play really does just exude “seasoned vet.”

Risky move, but if Marino and Dougie stay healthy and any of our prospects can pick up the slack, it could be an extremely smart play. Retention on him I believe would bring in a haul from some contending team.

But, if anyone on the right side gets hurt going into playoffs and/or whoever is on the 3rd pair just sinks the ship, it could be an insanely dumb move in hindsight.

Just a gamble really.

I don’t see a bid haul coming our way, but a late first is possible.

You’ve got to give to get. Don’t be too disappointed if a fan favorite has to leave in order to get Timo. Trust me, 2 years down the road you won’t even remember.
