At best it’s robbing Peter to pay Paul, strengthen the offense and weaken the D which already looks like it’s fraying at the edges a little

An additional move can be made to bring in someone that isn't flashy and can get by on d. It's not like we are required to only make one trade.

The Avs had to dip into Jack Johnson, TB with Schenn, STL had Bortuzzo, Gunnarsson, Dunn, Bouwmeester, etc.

Your defensive depth always gets tested. Trading Severson is flat out dumb. If anything, if there’s room to add a cheap bottom pair guy, they should probably do that.

The Devils aren't trading Severson. Not only are they not moving him, they're absolutely going to bring in another veteran depth defenseman. There's no shot in hell that they're going to be comfortable with Bahl or Okhotiyuk in the lineup in a playoff series in the event someone goes down.

We're going to lose Severson at the end of the season anyway, and I'm personally not convinced that keeping him is the right move. If we traded Severson for a decent return and threw a pick at Vancouver to get Schenn (just in case Hughes can't handle the NCAA-->NHL playoffs transition), would we really be worse off?

I don't see any logic to trading Severson when he's a key piece of our defense entering the playoffs.

The only scenario where I could see it happening is if Fitz needs to clear cap space because the Bratt and Meier extensions are looking more expensive than expected. In that case, Severson could be traded for a cheaper NHL caliber option on D. But even that seems like a stretch.

And it certainly won't be for picks. This is not a team loading up on futures anymore. They can taste the playoffs. Any moves we make must make the team better now, and moving Severson simply doesn't, unless it's a required first step for some other move.

Is Severson that important to the team atm? Not really. Marino has phased his role out.

While I like this determination to not get outbid, I worry that it could drive the price up exorbitantly if Buffalo or Carolina comes in with an offer specifically designed to make us top it and overpay.

Meier is probably worth it for most packages we've been talking about here, but there is a point where the price is too high and we should walk away.

Yea I think off limits for me are L.Hughes, Nemec, and Mercer but that's it.

The extensions wouldn't come into effect next season anyway.

Interesting

I both get this / understand this and kind of hate it.

The dude has been a pretty good trooper and has been here through just about all of the shitshow that this organization has been. I'd love to have him go out on a high note with the organization in the playoffs, etc. He's been a whipping boy for fans (sometimes undeservedly....sometimes very deserved) and he's just been a solid player.

Defensive depth is never a bad thing. Marino went down for nearly two months and Severson filled a major void there with the minutes he logged.

I'm on the record that I don't move Severson and am comfortable with losing him for nothing in the summer if that's what it boils down to. I would rather take a chance on a deep defensive group going on a playoff run.

Agreed. I hate the message it sends to the room. At least for one last year, after a decade of futility, they all get a chance to right past wrongs and now you're moving out a straight up good player. You'd have to bring back someone massive for me to feel like it's alright.

I'll say it like this, I hope they don't trade him just to make space or just to avoid losing him for nothing. I hope Fitz is approaching the same way he did with Coleman, "I'm not shopping him but if you knock on my door with something ridiculous, I'll listen."

You could argue either way for a Severson trade. I have no problem losing him as a rental but I also have no problem trading him to recoup assets that go out in a trade for someone like Meier.

yes because Luke Schenn is terrible

Keeping aside that we don't have to do one to do the other. Peter can theoretically get robbed and be ok, his bonus check is going to clear very soon.
Not this year....a rookie Hughes or Nemec is not going to be as good as Severson THIS year. I wouldn't rule it out next year, but this year it's like a 1% chance it's not a downgrade in April.

So get a second and a fourth for Severson and trade a third and a fifth for someone not as good...you guys either have ridiculously inflated expectations for a Severson return or deflated expectations of how much better Severson is than most of the schleps that get overpaid returns at the deadline.

Severson isn't the kind of guy GM's overpay for at the deadline cause he's not physical and doesn't have much playoff experience. Two things you and others would want to trade for to replace him.

First I wouldn't trade Severson right now for anything short of an overpayment.

Plus, how is what you just said not completely contradictory to the point you are making when all put together?

I just did this five times and now people are looking at me.
K, now pretend to shake salt onto your tongue from a salt shaker, you can actually taste the salt.
