Considering they didn’t bring Nemec up after the WJC’s when Marino was hurt for a test run, I doubt they move Severson. Unless it is a cap move where they are getting a cheaper d man back in return.

Had Simon come up and play well then I could see a Severson getting moved. Kind of like when they moved out Hale for Greene in 07 (although on a bigger scale).
Don’t think Nemec has much to do with this. Although he may add to their comfort level in doing so. Probably has more to do with Luke and where he’ll fit in.

We won't win the cup this year. We will end up losing Severson for nothing.

Trade him and gather assets.
I would like to beat the Rangers. We’re beyond the “gather assets” stage. Time to win.

But couldnt we use Luke or Simon in his spot?
I’d like to have Luke go in for Smith. I don’t think it’s fair to expect Luke to replace Severson’s big minutes.

I don`t like to trrade Severson, but if it help to trade Meier, than I can live with it. And if we will have first round pick this year somehow, it would be good. It`s a good draft this year.

It’s not gathering assets. It’s managing assets. And I doubt they want to take Smith out. They like him and his role and could see Luke for Severson as a more comparable replacement.

I wouldn’t trade severson they are going to need him for the playoffs. If he walks then he walks. The playoff value outweighs a pick in tbe mid-late twenties

Hey and I saw the goal onslaught coming in pre-season!

Admittedly, I was afraid something randomly terrible would prevent Dougie from getting 20 goals, but we all come from a place of pain as a fan base lol.

He is top 5 in the NHL (forwards and defense) at the skill you highlighted. It’s unreal how good he is at getting puck on net

I couldn’t care less about getting a late 1st round pick. The move would look so unbelievably stupid if a defenseman goes down and we can’t deal with it.

Trade Siegenthaler

I mean 20:30 a game and 4th most on the team isn’t 3rd pairing minutes at all.

Don’t think this has anything to do with what Severson wants. I think it’s just asset management from Fitz. Recoup some assets especially if we’re hunting for a big fish.

I think we can reasonably assume that Luke will be coming right into the lineup.

So in that case the most likely pairings IMO are

Siegenthaler Hamilton
Graves Severson
Hughes Marino
Smith

They’d have to send Bahl down which they probably don’t want to do. Hughes and Smith can also both play on their offside so Fitz may be comfortable just having 2RD. Get rid of Severson and it looks something like this

Siegenthaler Hamilton
Graves Marino
Smith Hughes
Bahl
Okhotiuk Nemec

Solid top four and then you have a high-end talent in Luke with your defensive guy in Smith on the 3rd pair. Couple of solid young guys as depth and maybe even Nemec if they want to do that sometime in the case of an injury.

I can't gauge what Hughes will be once he joins, but he should really be the #6, sheltered, and offensive draws when appropriate. I also think about injuries -- what happens if Marino goes down? Does Smith play with Graves? Not sure I like that much

Not if you think Luke Hughes can replace a significant chunk of Severson’s value.

I honestly think Luke Hughes is a massive part of this possibility.
They’re gonna want him to come in, play powerplay and probably play with Defensive veteran like Smith rather than someone like Severson.

We do not need to trade Severson to get Timo Meier. I don't know why these things keep getting conflated.
Who said we needed to?

Essentially I'm looking at it like our first + a hopeful first for Severson and someone not in our top teir of prospects for Timo.

Not saying that he can’t but that’s a huge gamble to take

I’m not sure they’re gonna want to shelter him that much. And sheltering him probably doesn’t involve him playing with Severson.

Agree that an injury would be more of a risk but that’s why it’s comes down to how comfortable they are with Luke and the other young depth options in Bahl, Okhotiuk, and possibly even Nemec.

But there’s a good chance we could deal with it. It certainly adds some risk but that might be worth it.
The d is already showing some cracks. I wouldn’t even be opposed to a small addition.

Let’s say we trade Severson and Graves goes down. The D is now:

Siegenthaler-Hamilton
Smith-Marino
Okhotyuk-Bahl

That is disastrous. And it would be crazy to hope Luke comes in as some savior. I think he can come in and contribute, but not be some minute muncher.

I only think it’s a huge gamble in the case of injuries. So it comes down to your comfort level with Luke, Bahl, Okhotiuk, and even Nemec as depth options if a dman or two go down.

Not sure it’s as disastrous as you think and I’ guessing they expect Luke to be able to play a decent role if they’re considering trading Severson. No one has suggested he’s gonna come in or would need to come in as some saviour or minute muncher though. Really just comes down to how comfortable they are with the young depth options. If they’re reasonably comfortable with those guys then it’s reasonable to trade Severson.

Hate to lose him for the playoffs but willing to trade him now if it helps recoup a pick and a player we can use in the Timo trade.
At best it’s robbing Peter to pay Paul, strengthen the offense and weaken the D which already looks like it’s fraying at the edges a little

Keeping aside that we don't have to do one to do the other. Peter can theoretically get robbed and be ok, his bonus check is going to clear very soon.
