If hellebuyck trade falls thru, I would not mind we bring back tatar for 1 year to play with palat and haula and to give holtz some competition and add to the depth. Wonder why he hasn’t signed anywhere yet, possibly waiting on tarasenko first.

Ottawa should be after him instead of Tarasenko. I unfortunately don’t think Tatar’s coming back. If there’s no goalie I’d want him or Suter

From everything the Devils have said and done, they want this year to be make or break for Holtz. They’re giving him a shot at 3RW.

Signing Tatar would be the opposite of the Devils’ plan. If there’s an off-season injury or something else that changes the team’s circumstances, then reevaluate.

At this point, though, best case is that Tatar is looking at a 1 year low salary deal from the Devils. Not sure he takes that. I’m assuming he’d have other similar offers, so he’d have to specifically prefer NJ.

All this said, I think Tatar makes the Devils a better team this year.

No need for Tatar back. Time to move on.
I’m skeptical he was ever coming back. I don’t think he was ever coming back. He was a two year stop gap signing and that was all he was meant to be.

And people that are surprised he hasn’t been signed yet, it took a couple of weeks into UFA the last time too. And he was only 30 years old then.

Moving on from aging players before their productivity falls off is a sign of great modern day GMing. Combined with fitz’s propensity to lock up young players before their value peaks, has us in a really good spot.

Toffoli looks like a Tatar upgrade, but I’m not sure he’ll be anything more then a rental/place holder… as he ages up too.

With that philosophy in mind, not sure how well helle fits the team either, as anything other then a rental.

In fitz we trust!

If they sign Tatar, it would have to be with the expectation he plays a depth role.

I wouldn’t hate Tatar if some nights he was with McLeod-Bastian, some nights he was scratched, and maybe he moves up in the lineup if there are injuries. Also think it’s more than likely he may find himself scratched come playoff time too, if he were to return

But to the same point, he’s too good of a player for that role. If all he is getting is one year offers at this point, I’d absolutely do that from a Devils perspective for 1.5-2 million

I’d feel much more comfortable about the forward group if Tatar was brought back for one year. He’s the perfect filler player to move up if the kids struggle.

Suter =. Pias ?
I think the Tatar ship has sailed . The way he bolted after the end of the season and didn’t attend the media avail …. He must have been told right away what the Devils plans were and that he wasn’t being brought back . That’s my take anyways .
I can’t see a veteran of that many seasons all of a sudden forgetting about that and leaving early without talking to media etc .

I feel bad for the guy but I’m thinking that there just wasn’t a roster spot and cap room allotted for him next season . And Firz knew that well beforehand and let him know as soon as possible.

We don’t “need” Tatar. We have a good enough roster that we can try out Holtz / Foote / Clarke and utilize their ELC’s instead of paying a 30+ year old . I’d rather use a player(s) we drafted and developed (Foote we just developed , not drafted but you catch my drift )
We know Tatar is a good regular season guy and an unknown in the playoffs . This way we save cap room , give a youngster a shot that can potentially be more effective for cheaper . (Doubtful ine of the kids out produces Tatar in year 1 , but at least see what we have in them )

Re-signing Tatar, like losing Boqvist by non-tendering him, is another one of those moves that I'm ok either way on.

Toffoli is likely to be an upgrade, and as a result, Tatar likely wouldn't see top 6 minutes regularly. If he comes back, it will be as third line depth, or as an injury insurance plug-in for the top 6.

And even that's only if Fitz thinks that neither Holtz nor any of the other young forwards are going to be able to stick in that spot. Otherwise, Tatar is unfortunately redundant.

How?

I wound actually prefer Tatar for one year over Holtz, but I'm not very high on Holtz. I'm not completely over him either, but I just think it's highly unlikely he'll be as good as Tatar of last year. I do think it's possible he can be like Tatar of 21-22. That's a little more realistic.

That said, I'm not sure Tatar in 23-24 will be as good as 22-23 Tatar. He may be closer to the 21-22 Tatar. He's turning 33 years old soon and that's not all that young in this league. I would be very hesitant to give him a 2 year deal, no matter what team I ran, unless it was for a very friendly cap hit. 2 years for $6 million combined would be a good deal for him.

Once again, I still believe he was merely a stop gap, much like Graves was via trade.

It was only ranking them at draft time. None of their after draft career counts.

That doesn’t even make sense either. Laf would be higher. Ekblad also probably should be over Nico too. Probably over Power too. Power over Laf if it’s just a prospect ranking is absurd. If this was tiered off the prospect hype I think it should go McDavid/Bedard tier, Matthews probably by himself, then a Laf/Dahlin/Jack tier and probably in that order too, then Ekblad/Nico/Power/Slaf. I also think there was quite a bit of a drop off from the Jack group to the Nico group. I feel like the Jack group was closer to the McDavid group than the Nico group.

I don’t see Bedard being better than Matthews and everyone else except McD . I get he is very highly skilled and will be a very good player but 2nd / 3rd best in the world good ? I guess time will tell but to me he is lacking one super elite level skill to out him over the top . Yes he is very good at almost everything but he doesn’t have game breaking speed , isn’t physically over powering , doesn’t have crazy edge work and exposive first couple strides . He will score a ton but I just don’t see him scoring more goals than a Matthews or Pastrnak ?

As @Devils731 said it was rating them at draft time. Bedard has incredible hype around him obviously.

Dahlin would definitely be above Laf in terms of hype. I honestly think he might have his own little tier right above Laf/Jack and below Matthews. The Dahlin hype was insane. People were calling him the best defensive prospect since at least Eric Johnson back in 2006, IIRC.

I don’t see how Lindy scratches him.

Very few coaches are willing to play lesser players when they have better ones they can deploy. Tatar was our #7 or #8 forward last year (taking Timo into account).

If the Devils sign Tatar, I think you’ll see a lot of Holtz getting scratched, benched and/or moved to the 4th line.

What do you guys expect Mercers next contract to be?

If it's long term?
If it's bridged?
