That doesn’t even make sense either. Laf would be higher. Ekblad also probably should be over Nico too. Probably over Power too. Power over Laf if it’s just a prospect ranking is absurd. If this was tiered off the prospect hype I think it should go McDavid/Bedard tier, Matthews probably by himself, then a Laf/Dahlin/Jack tier and probably in that order too, then Ekblad/Nico/Power/Slaf. I also think there was quite a bit of a drop off from the Jack group to the Nico group. I feel like the Jack group was closer to the McDavid group than the Nico group.

He put a link to a June 2020 article where he sort of did this same thing. (In 2020 it was the last 10 years plus Lafreniere to dump a certain someone.)

1) 2020: McDavid 2023: McDavid
2) 2020: Matthews 2023: Bedard
3) 2020: MacKinnon 2023: Matthews
4) 2020: Dahlin 2023: Dahlin
5) 2020: Lafreniere 2023: Lafreniere
6) 2020: Hughes 2023: Hughes
7) 2020: Ekblad 2023: Power
8) 2020: Hischier 2023: Ekblad
9) 2020: RNH 2023: Hischier
10) 2020: Hall 2023: Slafkovsky
NR) 2020: Yakupov

so is it safe to say that Casey is d be ranked higher then Holtz now on our board?

I assume we’re having a prospect poll at some point.

Ya. I usually start posting the polls the week after the prospects camp. Expect it this upcoming week.
You’re the best!

Anyway, since we love talking about Kovalchuk around here, I was looking up his stats and game logs from the 2019-2020 season, where he played for all 3 of LA, Montreal and Washington. Remember, LA and him mutually terminated the 1.5 years remaining on his 3 year deal and he was signed by Montreal for the remainder of the year, then flipped at the deadline to Washington about 1.5 months later.

Now I remembered him scoring a goal against us in his first game back at Prudential Center in 18-19. I'm pretty sure it was in garbage time that night, late in in a game that was already a blowout loss.

I didn't remember if he did play at least one more time against the Devils at Prudential Center and it turns out he did. So it was with Montreal, so I was like ''I bet he scored some kind of point that night, even though I don't remember it''. I see in his game log 0 goals, 0 assists and 0 points.

So I click on the game and I see this was a 5-4 shootout loss. The shootout winner scored by none other than Ilya Kovalchuk on Louis Domingue. And of course he did, because you can't make that shit up. That HAS to happen if we're in a shootout and Ilya Kovalchuk comes up to shoot against us in 2020 or any point after he left. I totally did not remember this game at all, but it was on February 4th of 2020. Was I really walking on the moon that night? I remember a lot of that stupid shit season, but I totally do not remember the Kovalchuk shootout winner. And I KNOW I was watching that night. I'm sure I was right there in the GDT.

What do you guys expect Mercers next contract to be?

If it's long term?
If it's bridged?
Long term if history has shown us anything. Fitz wants the young guys locked down. Mercer fits into that group, clearly. Now having said that, I don't know how they do it unless they ship Palat out tbh.

Who will put up more points next season... Mercer or Meier??
If Mercer puts up more points than Meier that would mean Meier got hurt or Mercer REALLLLLY popped off.

I know a guy that knew him at one point back in the day. Actually when he was coaching in Colorado.

One story I heard about him was that he told this person I know that this coaching job sucks and it hardly even pays the bills lol. And that he was glad he was collecting the GM’s salary on top of it lol, which was also barely anything even by like 1980 standards. He said it with a sense of humor, but also was somewhat serious.

As far as I know, Billy never coached in the NHL in any capacity after the Devils in 1983. His only coaching job listed after that was two years in 89-90 and 90-91 as an assistant coach at the university of Prince Edward Island. So he must been serious about not liking the job much.

If they sign Tatar, it would have to be with the expectation he plays a depth role.

I wouldn’t hate Tatar if some nights he was with McLeod-Bastian, some nights he was scratched, and maybe he moves up in the lineup if there are injuries. Also think it’s more than likely he may find himself scratched come playoff time too, if he were to return

But to the same point, he’s too good of a player for that role. If all he is getting is one year offers at this point, I’d absolutely do that from a Devils perspective for 1.5-2 million

I’d feel much more comfortable about the forward group if Tatar was brought back for one year. He’s the perfect filler player to move up if the kids struggle.
i would looooove to have tatar as our 13th forward, popping into the lineup if injuries hit. unfortunately, that’s just not realistic from his standpoint. he served his purpose here and i hope he can get a deal elsewhere. i’m a little surprised he’s still ufa, i would think arizona would be all over that on a 2 year deal.

Tatar was very effective during the regular season, largely playing with Nico, but his playoff performance makes me want to move on. I'd be fine obviously if it was a cheap deal, but at this point, I want playoff performers or players who can succeed in that style of game.

Tatar was not good with Montreal either so I'm skeptical of him being valuable in this setting going forward.

On some level he tried very hard to play properly and with consistency and intensity almost all of the regular season. He was in playoff mode all season. When everyone else went into playoff mode his advantage disappeared.

I think if Tatar is back it's as a regular, and a clear indication that they don't think Holtz is ready yet, or at least not ready to play to the level they hope to achieve this season. I'm rather skeptical of Holtz, thus I'm open to the idea.

And while there are concerns regarding Tatar's ability to play playoff hockey, I'd say that concern is significantly higher with Holtz.

In our favor is that every team would have these same concerns regarding Tatar. The teams that expect to be in the playoffs are not targeting Tatar. Bad teams may want him cause they know he can shepherd young players in the regular season. So if we were to offer he would have to choose between playing on a bad team, unlikely to make the playoffs, or on a good team which may look to squeeze him out come playoff time. Factor in the need to uproot and move to said bad team as well.

I don't know if it's expectations but I was always kind of surprised at his "grittiness" in the regular season, he'd lay some pretty decent hits at times, he'd always hustle back on D, but yeah, maybe he just didn't have that next gear in that regard.

after reading the main board thread on hellebuck, i created the theory of shrodinger's goalie. all goalies are both good and bad at the same time, but if they are on your team then they are bad. (its a work in progress)
The security guard at my dad’s office building when I was growing up used to call Brodeur “Marty the Marshmallow” because he gave up too many soft goals. Goes to show that a fanbase basically always thinks their goalie sucks regardless of how good they are.

With that said, our goalies since prime Schneider have legitimately sucked.

Every fanbase with a bad goalie (most of them) seem to think they have the worst defense.

It was that way with Blackwood here (even when everyone else was better last year), as well as declining, twilight era Schneider (even when Blackwood and/or Kinkaid were playing better than him) and even a small sect with Keith Kinkaid, even when Blackwood was playing fine behind the same team.

Right now it seems to be Anaheim fans and St. Louis fans. PARTICULARLY St. Louis fans, as Binnington is HORRENDOUS the last two years and Binnington was never a particularly great goalie past his rookie year regular season. And even in his cup winning playoffs he was just okay.

One goalie I've noticed recently that it's okay to slander is Markstrom. After the season he just had, Flames fans, as well as fans of other teams aren't quick to defend him. Maybe because he was on a Sutter team and the idea is that Sutter teams don't give up much and goalies usually look good behind his teams. Much like Markstrom did the year before this last one.

Jarry is another one that people seem to have turned on. Even though Jarry has never really been particularly bad, but he hasn't been particularly great either.
