ZBC hates Kane.

I’m willing to take a moderate chance on him rather than rolling out Boqvist, Haula, Holtz, McLeod etc. hoping to fill the net in some bizarro world.

If this team is clutching onto the 27th pick in the upcoming draft as a required prospect for a Stanley Cup, then they’ve failed as an organization.

The draft has provided them with the foundation of a championship team and we are seeing that now. Time to supplement.

The GM has told us that we need more offense and I agree
100% if people are willing to move a 2nd for Tara then just suck it up and ship out the first to get him or whoever it is. Goals are only going to be harder to come by the longer into the year and possible playoffs they go. I rather a proven scorer now then another stillman that won’t sniff the nhl for another 5 years if ever

Signing the player long-term changes the calculus. If we know with near certainty that that will happen, then ok, maybe makes sense then.

But the vast vast majority of deadline rentals do not sign with the team they got traded to. So the scenario you are advocating for is unlikely.
I don’t care about losing the 20th pick for a rental if it means it improves this teams chances in the playoffs. If you do I dunno what to tell you.

I am fine with moving the 1st round pick for the right player. Ideally, we could find a guy who can be extended longterm and not just a pure rental, but even still. We are in a position roster/prospect wise where we can absolutely "afford" to move that pick.

I just don't have much interest in Kane. I know that might not be a popular take, but yeah.

If there is one rental UFA forward target I would look at, it's ROR.

Can play center or wing. Very strong defensively. Can play matchup minutes. Good offensively. Can help the PP.

If you want the narrative pieces, he's a former Conn Smythe winner, a team captain, and has won the damn thing.

Total package.
is he affordable?

apparently the marino/smith thread is trending on the pens boards.. something about how our fans are calling marino "great offensively" and a "generational passer"?

no one on here thinks that about him right? yes, who cares what pens fans think, but wanted to check

Most of the praise for Marino has been for his shutdown defensive play, with some also for his strong work on the breakout, and the occasional impressive stretch pass. I don't think any of us would describe him as great offensively, just serviceable. This is probably the Pens board taking a comment out of context from one of our more overcaffeinated fans and conflating it with the opinion of mainstream Devils fans, because HF doesn't do nuance.

And throwing the word "generational" around for anybody on the Devils right now is lunacy. Even Hughes and Hischier (while excellent in their own right) are not generational players.

I like O'Reilly and would be interested in him at the right price. Fitz has said he is not interested in rental trades, though I'm sure that could change if the right deal came along.

I don't like Severson much either, and don't want him re-signed, but trading him in season doesn't make much sense.
I don’t agree much with this guy but this agree with him. Devils aren’t really in position to be trading away current on ice players if severson walks this summer so be it. I rather him on this roster for the spring then be happy we got a second round pick back at the deadline for him. This team shouldn’t be selling players for awhile.

Was it me? Was it when I said he was better than Dan Marino? I bet it was that.

I would prefer a piece they can fit into the core group going forward too, but the Devils' time to compete is now.

ROR is the perfect piece to add for the playoffs. If it costs a late 1st + marginal pieces, I'm doing it.

I don't know what the price on him would be.

But as a pure rental, they're easily looking at a 1st+ to start.

If they want a 1st, middling prospect, and Sharangovich, I'd make that deal.
If that is the price, you do it with zero hesitation.

Love Shara but....yeah.

but you know they're more than likely going to ask for Holtz instead.

He's certainly having an off year though, which may lower the price they get for him if moved. It could be just because STL sucks this year, but he's also close to 32 and it's reasonable to think it could be he's also declining.

If they wanted Holtz straight up, I'd probably lean toward doing it.

I was never that high on Holtz to begin with though.

Why not? He's playing on the 3rd pairing. His production isn't impressive. He's not a defensive stalwart. If he can be part of a package to fill a need for a sniper or a more physical presence in the top 6, you do it and plug Bahl into his spot.

Agreed, or we can even call up Nemec and see how he plays

He's definitely past his prime. He's 32. But as a rental, the age-related decline shouldn't be a huge factor.

His counting stats are down, but I think that's just because STL is simply not as good this season. The underlying two-way numbers still look good.

No interest at all in trading Severson. Team is playing well, Severson is playing well, who gives a shit about production, we know what Severson can do production-wise. Doesn't make sense.

Even if you could get a roster player back? Probably not likely but that is the scenario I was talking about.

Severson or Graves would be a big loss to our D. We are inevitably gonna lose at minimum 1 of the 2 this summer. We need Bahl/Nemec/Hughes/Ohotyuk to fill one of those spots. If we traded Severson for a 1st and promoted Bahl to full time than us making a swing for another top 6 forward would be easier to do. We could trade a 1st round pick and still have another in the bank to draft a forward this summer. I jist think the team is playing too good this year to mess with their lineup till we get closer to the deadline.

I don't foresee Severson as a "big loss". He's a bottom pairing guy on our current roster, and we still have stud guys in the pipeline. I will admit I am biased, I have never liked him as much as others here. I feel like the fact that he's been pushed as far down in the lineup as he has now that we have a good team sort of validates my feelings on him...

I asked ChatGPT to "write a song about the NJ Devils in the style of Bruce Springsteen"

Verse 1: In the Garden State, Where the meadows meet the shore, There's a team that brings us pride, And makes us roar.

Chorus: The Devils, the Devils, They're the team we love to see. Skating hard, and never backing down, They're the pride of New Jersey.

Verse 2: With the red and black on their chest, They take the ice with fire in their eyes. They play with heart, and never give up, Til the final buzzer sounds.

Chorus: The Devils, the Devils, They're the team we love to see. Skating hard, and never backing down, They're the pride of New Jersey.

Bridge: We'll be there in the stands, Cheering them on to victory. We are the faithful, And the Devils are our team.

Chorus: The Devils, the Devils, They're the team we love to see. Skating hard, and never backing down, They're the pride of New Jersey.

I love Patrick Kane, but someone like O'Reilly is more my speed. Timo Meier is obviously the gold standard, but we've thrown his name around enough over the last few months (years).

Kane won his Cups as the flighty, talented goal scorer with loads of brute force behind him. He'd definitely score some goals next to Jack - and trust me, that'd be very cool - but he's more of a "pure skill" add.

We need to add some beef.
