Just read a “hot rumor” from that hack, Eklund. He’s hearing Holtz, Severson and a 1st for Kane. Haha…preposterous! This dude is a clown.

Why would Chicago want a veteran D-man set to become a UFA when it is clear they must rebuild?! Fitz is not giving up a package that includes Holtz and a 1st for a rental. For a player like Meier with the idea of signing him to an extension? Possibly.

Severson most likely is a contract dump in that situation. Would help make the math work here and gives them a good player they can turn around and flip themselves.

Wouldn't Severson make more sense for NJ in a playoff run than sending him out as a cap dump? Who plays RD3 in the playoffs or worse, who plays RD2 in the playoffs in the event of an injury? Just seems silly if you are going to make a "go for it" move to send out a capable player as part of the deal.

Even if you could get a roster player back? Probably not likely but that is the scenario I was talking about.

No. You're a long-time Devils fan - who really fit in as a deadline acquisition here? The Devils acquired a million guys over the years and it seldom goes like how the GM or coach would draw it up. Most of the time they got 80% of the player they thought they were getting. Some noted exceptions are Zidlicky, Lukowich, and maybe Grant Marshall, but just about everyone else failed to pop. Kovalchuk was solid but not exceptional. Nieuwendyk and Langenbrunner didn't do a ton until year 2 here, e.g.

Throw on top of this the fact that the Devils system is legitimately different from how a lot of other teams are playing and I just don't see the need to acquire anybody, unless, say, Bastian's out for the year. But I definitely see no need for a defenseman.

LOL what a f***ing joke. This guy really must be a bitter berry Leafs fan or something.

I think people are overreacting a bit this time. The majority of that article about Nieds is positive, they just pointed that incident out to show his "competiveness" (which is still a pretty lazy way to do it though). It's more the way the Stevens article should have been written.

Fitz isn't opposed to rentals depending on where we are

makes total sense. if this lineup rolls into the playoffs and we are say top 4 in the conference and he doesn't bring in an additional player wherever the need is then its a huge failure on his part. you have to be willing to give up some of the future for the now

A week and a half ago the Devils had the second best record in the NHL and now they only have the second best record in the NHL.

Hopefully they spiral in this fashion for the rest of the season.
What in the....?

Excuse me but the lead is dwindling in the DIVISION.

I couldn't give a rat's ass about the LEAGUE.

We have a very tough stretch coming up, plus the Pens are coming on like Gangbusters (much like we were before).

Devils need to turn it around in a hurry if they want to remain in their position.

Beating the Flyers (to stop the bleeding) just prior to the upcoming tough stretch will be critical.

I thought Kovalchuk was quite good the year we got him and in those playoffs. Not as good as Atlanta Kovalchuk though that may be attributable to the change in team-systems. Atlanta was a real threat on offense when he was there.

Mogilny had already lost his mojo in Vancouver and didnt turn it on here until year 2, so hed fit your description. Devils were quite the force offensively at that time as well

Maybe it will be different now with the new style of play

The Penguins just lost Zucker and Petry for weeks at minimum.

Probably will be an issue and we never beat the Canes.

Kovalchuk's shooting percentage cratered, he went from a guy on pace for a 50+ goal season in Atlanta to someone on pace for 30 goals here. And he didn't change his game a whole lot here that year either - he was still basically not moving on defense on LW in the D zone. He wasn't awful, but like I said - maybe 80% of the guy he was in Atlanta.

Yup

And he never had a 40 goal season again in the NHL after that season he was traded to us.

He MIGHT have scored 40 in 11-12 if he didn't miss 5 games, as I believe he had 37 in 77 games? Maybe he scores 3 more in 5 games that year, it's certainly possible.

But his minutes played that season were unlike anything to that point in his career. He still averaged 45 seconds more per game that season than his second highest to that point, which was his Rocket Richard year in 03-04 at just 20 years old. Wasn't 41 goals for the Rocket Richard that year kind of low?. Didn't he share the Rocket Richard that year with Rick Nash? My machine is acting up too much for me to want to look it up.

Now, he did leave the NHL at 30 years old, so it's not like he played that many more seasons in the league after 09-10 to be able to have more 40 goal seasons, but odds are extremely high it wouldn't have happened. There was one poster very adamant as of about 2017 that Kovalchuk would easily pot I forgot if he said 30 or 40 goals if he came back and played in the league. I think expecting even 30 was being far too generous at that point.

And when he came back at 35 years old, he didn't come anywhere near that.

i think that season was a 3 way tie (them 2 and iginla)

Good catch

Something told me Iginla was in the race with him too. Just didn't feel like looking it up.

Maybe I need to look up Rocket Richard winners in the dead puck/pre Ovechkin era, but 41 seems kind of low to me?

I know they didn't really have a Rocket Richard trophy until the late 90's or something, but there was always a league leader in goals and that seems kind of low?

It was very low now that I look. Ovechkin had 32 in the lockout shortened season that was 48 games in 12-13. Crosby had 44 to win it in 16-17. Auston Matthews had 41 in the covid shortened 56 game season.

We're still 10 points up on the field. The distance between us and Washington is the same as the distance between the Rangers and the Flyers (2nd last in the East).

This is still a healthy cushion and we'll go on more long winning streaks. Everybody chill.
Division leads always dwindle it’s almost like the rest of the division was supposed to lay down at the 20 game mark some of you guys are freaking out over morning. Do you know how large of a league 6 points and even 10 points are .
It's literally like more than half of the members turned into Devils Dominion after the last loss.

Actually, a bunch after the Rangers loss, then even more after last night.

He spent the last 2 months of that season doomsaying about the Panthers and how they're coming for us and we better buckle and be scared. And then quite a few others followed suit.

This time it's happening only 2 months into the season.

Don't forget, we also have 2 games in hand on Washington. So that's potentially a bigger cushion than just 10 points.

Don't tell me to chill. I fully expected us to maintain the 21 wins in 24 games pace we had before this 3 game losing streak.:sarcasm:

If some of you were watching the Canadiens/Sens game earlier.....

They had Anthony Stewart on the intermission and he's already talking like the Senators are gonna clean up the upcoming schedule, as it's filled with non-playoff teams lol.

I wonder what happens if the CBJ go on a winning streak?

WE’RE DOOMED!!!!

May be the first team in NHL history to get relegated.
