Um, we have two guys on pace for that many.

This isn't the calculus at play. The question is...is the acquired player improving your team in the short term more than the assets given up might improve your team in the long term?

I'm skeptical that a rental acquisition would be a net positive. For example, if we acquired Tarasenko at the cost of Holtz and a first...is the increased odds of us winning the Cup with him added to the current roster actually higher than the odds of either Holtz or that first turning into a player that will help us be a contender for years to come? I'm not so sure that's a bet I'd make.

If the Blues wanted to take Severson and a 2nd (lol)...OK then I wouldn't think twice about it. But the likelihood of that happening is close to zero, so...
There’s on pace and then there’s doing it. I guess we will see how it plays out for the entire year.

For the record I didn’t say holtz and 1st for Tara but yes that would help this team now and if you can resign him reasonably he will help long term more so then holtz and the first would. That applies to any rental player the devils core is set. They also have enough high end prospects that should contribute to the near future. No problem trading away the 20th pick for help now

Why not go for Patty Kane for a 1st? Would complement Hughes quite well

Btw 100% would do it

Anyone know the stats on the PP earlier in the season, it seemed to be clicking a lot more.
Structurally there are clearly some issues, but I can’t help but think they’d be better if they just cut out terrible decision making. Hughes in particular does some really boneheaded things sometimes at the top of the circle that immediately send the puck out of the zone. Just throw shit at the net.

Tarasenko would not cost a first and Holtz. The league being capped out is going to affect the prices of any rentals, and the Devils are on that list - they likely have to clear out Johnsson to add stuff.
So what you're saying is we could get him for a second?

In that case, get it done Fitz.

I think there was a stretch where we scored on the power play like 7 or 8 games in a row, but it was a very deceiving stat.

I'm pretty sure our percentage was still not amazing over that stretch, as there was a game we were like 1 for 8 and we also scored a 5 on 3, as well as two different 4 on 3 overtime winners during that stretch.

At 5 on 4 we were not scoring goals at that impressive of a clip.

The Haula stuff on the power play needs to end.

ZBC hates Kane.

I’m willing to take a moderate chance on him rather than rolling out Boqvist, Haula, Holtz, McLeod etc. hoping to fill the net in some bizarro world.

If this team is clutching onto the 27th pick in the upcoming draft as a required prospect for a Stanley Cup, then they’ve failed as an organization.

The draft has provided them with the foundation of a championship team and we are seeing that now. Time to supplement.

The GM has told us that we need more offense and I agree

Signing the player long-term changes the calculus. If we know with near certainty that that will happen, then ok, maybe makes sense then.

But the vast vast majority of deadline rentals do not sign with the team they got traded to. So the scenario you are advocating for is unlikely.

its almost like there are other options that are going to be available.....?

I don't think we need a guy like Kane who is pass first. We need goal scorers. Plus, he is a POS human.

Before we start getting giddy and talking about extending Haula, if he finishes the year with only 6 or 7 goals and actually plays a full season, I can totally see him not getting an NHL contract next year or possibly just a PTO if he's not re-signed.

Remember, he is turning 32 years old. It's not like he's 29 or 30. A poor offensive/down year like this if it lasts the whole season can cause a player like Haula and at his age to become obsolete at the NHL level.

I think he'll score more than the 3 goals he's on pace for, but if he don't come a bit closer to 10 goals than he's pacing for and has under 40 points, I could see him going unsigned all summer, before either getting a PTO or signing with European league team on August 12th.

I’m a vacuum Kane as a player is good. But that’s not the type of player they should be targeting. If they spend the assets on a player they’d better have some runway with this team, not a player on his way out.

Not saying that he’s the first or only option, but willing to go out on a limb and say he’ll score more than whoever he replaces in the lineup.

We got rental Ilya Kovalchuk for Oduya, Bergfors, Cormier and a 1st.

We won’t have to trade Holtz to get a good one this year.
That was a classic Lou steal. We also got Anssi Salmela in that deal as well.

We should get a rental soon, make it like a half rental in some ways. That way we can get the rental and Palat in the lineup and be able to sit Holtz and Bovquist which are offensive black holes on our team

Surely some contender or bubble team overvalues Severson...that's where I'd start to be honest. I have no interest at all in re-signing him at his likely steep UFA price.

We’re more in need of a Palat type player than a Kane. Luckily we literally have Palat coming back soon lol. But I would love to find another guy that plays like that to go in for Boqvist. He’s fine, but his game is really not clicking in that role.

Losing both Palat and Bastian definitely hurts in matchups against stiffer competition. Lindy clearly doesn’t like what he’s seeing from that “4th line”.

I don't like Severson much either, and don't want him re-signed, but trading him in season doesn't make much sense.

In the Church of Salmela
apparently the marino/smith thread is trending on the pens boards.. something about how our fans are calling marino "great offensively" and a "generational passer"?

no one on here thinks that about him right? yes, who cares what pens fans think, but wanted to check

Why not? He's playing on the 3rd pairing. His production isn't impressive. He's not a defensive stalwart. If he can be part of a package to fill a need for a sniper or a more physical presence in the top 6, you do it and plug Bahl into his spot.

If there is one rental UFA forward target I would look at, it's ROR.

Can play center or wing. Very strong defensively. Can play matchup minutes. Good offensively. Can help the PP.

If you want the narrative pieces, he's a former Conn Smythe winner, a team captain, and has won the damn thing.

Total package.

a Smith-Bahl pairing is not something I am particularly interested in. At all.

Also what team is going to look at a pending UFA DMan as a valuable asset in a trade package?
