Nope, that's what fans discussing trades on internet message boards base it on. But in the real world, it's the real needs and desires of the teams involved that matters, not something that happened decades ago in different circumstances.
The Devils really need a goalie lol. And yes that's what trade values are based on. When What are you talking about decades ago? No one is talking about decades ago. You're lost.

Thinking about this more, anyone proposing Saros/Ullmark/Markstrom for 10th overall is way out to lunch. I still don't see a goalie fit that'd be worth the pick 10.

For forwards, I'm really starting to wonder about Brady Tkachuk. There's been a lot of smoke around him. There's the Fitzgerald connection. Gotta think NJ could easily offer up a package of 10th+Mercer/Holtz. I just don't know what else would need to be added and how the cap would work
wtf are you talking about lol. The sens GENERAL MANAGER came out and said they are building the team around him. And that offer is absolute trash on top of it. The only 'smoke' is internet bloggers who have no connections speculating about it.

Ullmark makes sense for Jersey but is he valuable enough to return the 10th overall pick? 30 years old & going into the final year of his deal, seems like a bad trade. When Schneider got traded for the 9th he was 25 with club control.

27 years old his first season in NJ, but yeah your point still applies. He still had one RFA year left and was younger.

Players traded for known Top 10 picks post-lockout:

Jeff Carter (26, 11 years of term left on his contract!)
Jordan Staal (24, 1 year until UFA, but a slam dunk to sign an extension in Carolina for family reasons)
Cory Schneider (27, 2 years left on his contract)
Derek Stepan (27, 4 years left on his contract)
Alex DeBrincat (24, RFA with 2 years of control)

Connor Garland/Oliver Ekman-Larsson (This was a Frankenstein package with a 25 year old Garland with 2 years of control, a soon to be 30 year old OEL with 7 years left on his contract, and multiple cap dumps going to Arizona)

Jim Benning notwithstanding, a midish 20s core player with term/control is the likely ask (with New Jersey potentially adding).
Using top 10 picks as your cutoff for valuing the 10th OA specifically can really sway results. For example how much better is 10th OA than 11th-15th OA. I think a more accurate range would be players traded for 5th-15th OA, that sets 10th OA as the medium.

With that said we can add a few names to that list:

Vesa Toskala (30, 1 year until UFA)
Nathan Horton (25, 3 years remaining on contract, traded before NTC kicked in on July 1st)
Milan Lucic (27, 1 year until UFA)
Dougie Hamilton (22, RFA rights, coming off ELC)
Kasperi Kapanen (24, 2 years of term left before RFA with arb rights)
Seth Jones + #32 (27, 1 year until UFA, due to timing of draft Chicago was able to negotiate an extension with Jones prior to trade)
Rasmus Ristolainen (27, 1 year until UFA)
Kirby Dach/Alex Romanov (21 and 22 respectively, both RFA's)

Do you see any other team making an offer for an unretained markstrom? Especially a 1st worth?

LAK, TO, Colorado, Carolina. Those are some of the most cap strapped teams in the league. They wouldn't just be paying a 1st. LAK would be paying a 1st+Matt Roy, TO would be paying a 1st+Bertuzzi, Colorado would be paying a 1st+ a likely forced dump of a valuable asset like Girard, Manson, Colton, Carolina would be paying a 1st+Skjei/Pesce.

And just from a value perspective.

Age 35, sure he probably could play like a top 10-15 goalie and be worth 6 mill

Age 36? I would rather not commit 6 mill to a goalie at age 36 with markstrom's inconsistency over the last 4 years. Especially that, since he has a full NMC, you are 100% stuck with it. You cannot dump that salary.

Also, take a look at GSAx over the last 2 years:

Markstrom: 30.4, 107 starts
Freddy+Pyotr: 36.4, 106 starts
Georgiev+Annunen: 27.5, 141 starts
Talbot+RIttich: 33.3, 78 starts
Woll+Samsonov: 30.6, 114 starts

I think teams could probably put a package together that would require the devils to offer a 25 first as a competitive offer. The devils don't have a second this year....if the primary pieces are a future second + a mediocre prospect (because lets be real, the moment anyone says Casey, Lenni or Gritsyuk should go to Calgary in the trade, Devils fans are immediately going to scream no way), I think a team could beat that.

Then you have to consider that at some point, you just have to offer enough to make it worth it for Calgary to move him now. If you offer a future (probably late) second and a mediocre prospect...well, Calgary isn't losing much is they hold on to him, he craters and they don't get anything for him. But if he has another strong first half, they could get a much nicer return than the one that they passed on.

And yes, I know that people are going to talk about how Markstrom was upset with how it all went down last year and they have to trade him and all that stuff...but they don't. We have no idea what's going on behind the scenes there. He could have easily moved on past that over the subsequent months.

I think if you're looking at your cup contention window with your core being sometime in the next 3/4 years, Ullmark should fit in just fine. He only has 249 games on his belt, which isn't a whole lot for a goaltender his age.

IMO only Gibson makes the most sense as both teams can have a few pieces moving back and forth due to cap reasons

Boston also has a netminder they were rumoured to have been looking at moving.

Markstrom for sure makes sense, but it's a toss up here.

Saros yes, but extension rumours etc are going to be a bit of a hard bite

Outside chance Demko because cap works, and hey; why not trade another top 10 pick to Vancouver for a goalie with groin/hip issues that won't materialize for 2-4 years.

Realizing that the #10 straight up for Markstrom is too rich for NJ, even at 50% retention, I’m curious what the flames can add to put this over the top for NJ fans.

Brodeur has called Markstrom a top 5 goalie, so I suspect he’s still one of the top targets for NJ.

Does #10 for Markstrom (50%) and #28 get it done?
I think so
