Murray didn't kick his leg out to attempt a save until after Bastian was out of the way. If Murray was trying to slide over earlier he would have tucked his leg in more and got his body over, that is what goalies do in that situation. The rule is based on impeding the goalie's ability to attempt a save, which didn't happen. The NHL's explanation of a "significant presence" by Bastian is pulled straight from their ass to cover for incompetent officials since no such term appears in the rules, as usual.

By how that call was made, no player is ever allowed to touch a goalie in the build up to a goal. That's an absurd standard no one should want.

Murray's foot hit's Bastian's skate a second before the puck goes by.

Hockey fans: „Our players are tough, unlike those diving soccer players acting injured.“
Hockey fans when a couple plastic cups get tossed onto the ice: „This is outrageous, won’t somebody think of the injury risk!“

Calm down.
Haula said he got hit by some and it wasn't a big deal because he's in equipment but was concerned for the staff without equipment on. Then you have Marner saying how he was in danger and that it was a dangerous situation that they had to flee from.

Hockey fans when their team loses a game in November because the refs followed the rules: Flipping off ref, throwing beers at players, general cacophony of whining and outrage, screaming f*** YOU while turning bright red.

Casual fans who don't know the rules get angry when their team loses and can only put the puck in the net by committing an infraction. Imagine you guys spent this much time reading the NHL rulebook, instead of whatever the hell this thread is
You have it backwards. Casual fans don’t care about a game enough for it them to get emotionally carried away. If a home crowd doesn’t get tangibly angry after three disallowed goals, you’re not playing in front of a fanbase, but in front of some causals with corporate tickets. Knowing the rules should lead to being able to recognize the correctness of calls afterwards, that’s all.

It didn’t seem to immediately affect Murray’s kick out but the argument could be made that the initial contact prevented him from being in position. Didn’t seem like it on the replay to me but I accept the call.

I just don't get it - he goes to slide his leg out to the exact spot where the puck passes him, and he hits Bastians foot, who for some reason is standing 15" off the goal line during a live play. Imagine if you could just put a couple guys in the crease as pillars the goalies had to move around to make saves?

the crease exists for a reason.

This was more than just a game in November though. It was a potential franchise record breaking game. There was a lot of extra emotion attached to this one and for 3 goals in a row to be disallowed you have to expect some anger from the crowd. Some of them went way too far.

Yet somehow you guys still have the same amount of 1st round wins as we do in the past decade. 0.

Not much we can do about that as fans, but you can't question our loyalty to the team. We show up in good years and in bad. NJ's rink has been a ghost town since they started missing the playoffs. I respect teams like NYI who filled their barn last year even in a bad season. I've loved watching NJ this year, I'll still watch them, but that fanbase is toxic as hell. Bunch of grown men screaming f*** you, faces bright red, throwing beer at players who had nothing to do with the call.

Just a terrible look, and even worse that fans in here are defending it.

They bumped skates before Murray reacted to try and make a save, he was just standing still. When he kicked his leg out it never touched Bastian, it went between his legs. His ability to make the save was not impeded.

They removed the "can't be in the crease" rule years ago, and the NHL saying "significant presence" is the standard is just made up bullshit.

Or, more likely, they didn't realize what happened. Many people have said how poor the replays are in arena, they apparently barely showed replays of the disallowed goals as they were being reviewed.

Many fans probably didn't even see the kick. Again, not condoning their actions but they don't have the same replays people do at home.

Also, that first goal should've counted. Didn't impede Murray at all. At the very least Marner should've got a hold leading up to it.
And I think this is something that people really need to let sink in.

For the people in attendance they are at the mercy of the board guy in the arena. They aren't priviledged to 4-5 different tv angles and annalysts going over just why the call was made. They also don't hear the clarification from the NHL later on as to why it was called the way it was.

They are in a bubble controlled by someone else, and if that one person doesn't show them a replay or a bad angle of one what are the fans going to do?

Yeah they shouldn't throw stuff but any NHL arena would have erupted after the 3rd one. I've seen arena's do it for less.

His kick out didn’t touch bastion at all. There was contact before he kicked his leg out which is why the goal was disallowed. The contention is whether or not that contact impacted the save. Refs thought it did.

Scotiabank Arena is mostly corporate seats. People show up regardless because most of the arena is not filled with diehard fans, they are filled with business people entertaining clients or employees getting free tickets from their employer. It's also why the platinum seats are empty so often because they are down in the lounge, and why the building has the reputation for being one of the quieter ones.

I've been a full season ticket holder for like 20 years, I don't care or control how others spend their money and I certainly don't blame anyone for not spending their money on the trash teams we have had in this past decade.

The Islanders had horrid crowds for many years at Nassau when their team sucked. They ain't no different than any other fan base.

The puck went in directly where Murray's foot would have been if Bastian didn't block it.

Honestly, all 3 were easy calls, I don't really get the outrage or the confusion. Maybe the rules are bad, that's a different conversation.

Bastian barely touched Murray's foot, he didn't impede him at all. It's a terrible call.

So was the miss on Marner clutching onto Bastian right before the goal. Awful referring all night long.

Nah, the lower bowl has a lot of corporate seats, but this fanbase would fill those no problem if they dissapeared. People pay $500 for a weekday game, demand isn't an issue.

It took the Toronto Laughs 3 dissallowed goals, the first two of which were ridiculous calls, three posts, and Murray being a wall, from what were two periods of hockey where one team dominated the other in every way. Just one of those games where things don't go your way. Laughs had zero business winning this game for anyone who watched. Devils dominated them at will.

I guess i can spin it too to say... it took devils top 3 D-men for the leafs to be out and injured to so called "dominate" while surrendering the first 2 goals of the game.

am i doing this right?

According to TSN, pre-pandemic 85% of their capacity was season ticket holders. A bunch of these hit the reseller market of course, but many do not. Their fanbase is huge so of course they have high demand, but no matter how the team is doing they are going to sell the majority of their tickets just based on their season ticket holders.
Season ticket holders make up about 85 per cent of seats at Leafs games, and roughly 70 per cent for the Raptors.

First goal taken away we just covered. The contact between Bastian and Murray did not seem to affect the save but the refs made the call.

Second goal taken away. If it was incidental contact it should’ve been a goal. If it was enough to be considered goaltender interference it should’ve been a penalty.

Third goal disallowed was kicked by Haula but deflected off of a Leaf player. Rule states the puck cannot be kicked intentionally and deflect off of anything. That one was a good call.

You say that like it's a negative. There is a 20 year waiting list and rarely an empty seat in the house lol

Anyways, was an exciting game. Devils players were diving for calls all night, but our AHL defence and backup goalie held the line. Hopefully we meet in the ECF, would be a great series.

Just might have to have a couple of these on standby in NJ for when the fans get sad:

I didn't say it was a negative, just that with the cost of those seats most of them are not "regular" people. Most other teams do not have that many corporate seats, and your average fan is going to be more reluctant to spend money on a team losing all the time.

I just don't see loyalty to a team being terrible as a virtue. A franchise should earn the money spent by their fans.

To each their own, I don't think we will agree on this. All teams go through cyclical ups and downs, the fans should stick around either way.
