Canes fans also seem to think he's lost a step.

Would be a perplexing move IMO. Not necessarily a clear upgrade and you lock yourself into a more expensive, longer-term deal. I get that Marino would be moved to upgrade elsewhere, I just don't see the point.

This to me screams Fitz overvaluing grrrrrit

Brett Pesce is a clear upgrade on John Marino lol.

Hes a very good PKer, very good defensive Dman who also checks the box of making us tougher to play against. Doesnt lay hits like that, but great at clearing the crease / blocking shots

Not to mention Marino can be used to upgrade another position / gain assets
Agreed, with Winnipeg having a clear need for RHD, this seems like a match made in heaven.

We need good defensive players. Pesce is that. Clock is ticking but the window is open with lots of youth. Contracts get moved when needed. I’d be happy with Pesce, just don’t make it too extreme of a deal.

But like so is Marino. So if you’re bringing in Pesce but moving out Marino you’re looking at a wash defensively while being worse contract wise and older.

If you think you can take that conclusion from that data I don’t know what to tell you. It’s a ridiculous conclusion.

That his skating isn’t dropping off? Do you have a better way of coming to that conclusion? Measuring game speed is the only way to do so.
Even if there isn’t a better way to do so statistically that’s not even close to a half decent way of doing so. At most you could say it’s a good sign.

Him having a few more burst over a certain speed doesnt come anywhere close to telling me that his skating hasn’t declined.

I think he's probably the Smith replacement. I don't expect him to play as many games as Smith did last year. Unlike Smith, I actually think he'll be penciled in to be the 7th defenseman in a healthy roster, unlike Smith who was rarely a healthy scratch last season, despite being a healthy scratch frequently though the final quarter of the 22-23 season.
They probably want to keep Santeri Hatakka on the Comets. There's no need to keep him as a 7th defenseman in the press box. Nick DeSimone is better as the 7th Dman while Hatakka gets more ice time in AHL. DeSimone wasn't bad, he's cheap and comes with size.

So you don’t believe if a study was done with max skating speed from one year to another that comparable measurements (trends) wouldn’t be found in all areas of skating, if measured? I think there is probably a pretty strong correlation when comparing the same player.

In all areas of skating? No not at all. There’s so many different aspects of skating and just taking their maximum speed on its own does not remotely tell you if their overall skating has improved or declined.

Let’s make this clear, I don’t believe Pesce is a good skater, I just don’t believe he is worse.
I don’t know if he’s worse or not. I just don’t think you can reasonably take the conclusion you did from the data you provided.

If one’s max speed has increased then there is a strong correlation their acceleration has improved as well, unless they changed the skate cut (highly doubt this).
