I don’t think they trade Sevo yet and then depending on the situation at the deadline they either keep him or trade him. If we’re doing really well and in a playoff spot they keep him for the playoffs.

If we’re maybe a bit outside and/or Nemec has gotten an opportunity due to injuries and looks capable then they may trade him at the deadline.

haha, seems like you said it already

This also lets us not rush Nemac and let him develop a bit more in the AHL. I'm sure he could've made a good push to make it, but between (likely) playing 3rd pairing minutes in the NHL or (likely) top pairing minutes in the AHL, I think the latter would be more beneficial.

If he does well, then I believe that's when Fitz will look into trading Severson. I doubt he has any intention of trading him now.

Siegenthaler/Hamilton
Hughes/Marino

I like the looks of that top 4 moving forward. Maybe not this year, but in the future (and until Nemec is ready). Assuming of course Severson is moved, which it seems pretty likely now. Not sure it makes sense to have 3 RHD signed long term with Nemec in the fold. Although you can never have too many good defensemen I guess.

Honestly I feel like we need another LHD for safety net then resigning Severson. Would prefer someone that can hold down the top 4 on the left incase Hughes isn't quite ready for those minutes like Marino will for Nemec

Pens fan here. You guys will like Marino as long as you don't expect too much from him offensively. His offensive instincts stink but he can skate the puck out of trouble as well as anybody and he's very solid defensively.

Sometimes he's weak in front of the net. Ideally paired with a guy who can handle that.

We already have a guy like that in Siegenthaler. Outside of the very few people who want 6 offensive defensemen, we are quite happy with Sieg.

I'm assuming Graves is probably that guy for this year at least, unless they decide to move him this summer yet.

I’m a little surprised to see Mariano’s so good defensively. I always noticed his skating and his puck moving when i watched Pittsburgh. Bodes well for his future, really like this move.

Who’s gonna be the Devil who turnstiles Smith in the first Devils/Pens game this season? I’m going with Mercer.

I would say Jack Hughes easily, but I'm not sure if they'll ever get matched.

He has to be as Hughes won't even be on the roster until April. I think they need someone the following year as well.

I don't like going into the 23-24 season with Siegs as the only experienced top 4 D

My Marino gif for when he contributes. Psyched to have him aboard!

AMAZING DEAL, holy crap. @StevenToddIves must be happy.
Indeed I am. My post is on page 14 or 15 of this thread I think. I'm thrilled. The Devils blueline looks great, and NJ may not be done. I wouldn't rule out turning Severson into the centerpiece for a trade to get a big-time top 6 F and then signing PK Subban to a one-year deal.

He is :

Happy days are here again!

Clearly Severson is gonna be packaged with Bratt in the fabled deal for Tkachuk.

Honestly, some might not be happy but I'd do that, but I doubt they (calgary) would.

Severson without the offensive talent, but may be a tad better defensively. Not entirely comparable.

They aren't really comparable at all. Severson is way better offensively. Marino is way better defensively.

Please stop with the Niederreiter talk. This guy is a MIDDLE SIX FORWARD. I would rather Mercer, Bratt, Shara, Palat on top 6 and we're actually still tryna get rid of other bottom 6 forwards. We gonna be paying him UFA premium for the next 5-6 years. I'm shocked how we can complain about a Palat contract then mention Niederreiter everyday. It's not happening.

We still need solid 3rd line wingers, last I checked.

Yes LD. We have two on the right side. Only one on the left. Gives Nemec plenty of cushion but none for Hughes
I mean I’d be more than comfortable with that if Bahl and/or Okhotiuk look good this season, and then we’ll have Mukhammadullin too and Smith as a bit of a safety. Wouldn’t worry about it too much and I certainly wouldn’t bring Graves back and pay him for his experience if some of the young guys are actually better than him.

i don’t really agree. This team and our system is loaded with them, even if both Johnsson and Tatar get moved for nothing. Haula, Wood, Bastian, Boqvist, Zetterlund, Thompson, Foote, maybe Holtz, any of them could slot in on those bottom two lines

Jeez people are actually crying over losing Ty Smith in Twitter. They seem to have way more believe in his bounce back, or they don't actually watch the games.

I said it before, the only way I see Smith having a future here is if he becomes a 80 pt norris type d-man and...to be quite honest, I don't ever see him becoming that.

I was just thinking about that. Imagine in two seasons:

Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Hughes - Marino
Okhotiuk - Nemec

And this is why we let him go. Huges is a better Smith. We just don't need Smith.

This is what I was thinking in my head too. A very balanced d lineup.

No reason to be nervous with Bratt. We have 13 million to work with to sign these guys with Bratt

Hope we can find a way to offload Tatar and Johnsson. Forward group looking crowded and a little wiggle room would be nice.
This is great! Not only do we get the defense-first RHD we've desperately needed for years, we get him young and cost-controlled. Smith was extraneous on the roster and losing him is not a major problem for us. And, just as nice, this pretty much guarantees Nemec gets a full season in the AHL (hopefully paired with Okhotiuk) and removes the temptation for us to rush him to the NHL.
Really hoping Okhotiuk is the #6 to start the season. Or at least platooning with Brendan Smith.

We won’t offload Tatar. Maybe Johnsson if we can find a way to. Won’t be easy though.
