Gonna join the "great deal" conga line here. In a cap-less world I'd love to see the Devils re-sign Severson, but this ain't a cap-less world, so if this move indeed portends the end of Damon's tenure I'll feel bad but I understand it. With Ty, I hate to give up on a guy so quickly, but with the Devils' defensive pipeline now what spot does he really have? Hope the guy goes to Pitt and rediscovers his game, even as I hope he doesn't help the Pens too much.
The great thing with this move really is the amount of flexibility it gives the Devils when it comes to the Severson situation, though. Fitz has all kinds of options open now in that regard:
-Keep Sevs and start the season with a pretty loaded right hand side of the blue line. It's still hard to say the Devils are ready to be a playoff team (even if just thanks to the East being pretty loaded at the top), but they clearly want to compete and get the young guys used to winning and fighting for a spot. If we end up with a good season and Sevs walks at the end, it will at least have been a good experience for a young, growing roster. And clearly, with what he's doing now, Fitz seems like he wants this team being legit this year.
-Trade Sevs now and try to get an impact forward, as has been discussed here.
-Trade Sevs at the deadline and consider taking picks in exchange. '23 draft class is nice and deep, so the picks for it are going to be worth extra in the eyes of many, whether the Devils opt to use more for themselves or package a couple for the impact player they want.
Again, I'd like to keep the guy, but with the talent the Devils have on the way and the cap hit Damon projects to carry moving forward as he hits 30 years old it'll be tough to justify it as the Devils look forward to a future with hopefully a number of good young players they want signed through their primes.
And man...Marino is good! Like, he's really good! So it's not like it's some schlub who's going to essentially replace Damon, it's a legitimate hockey move that gives the Devils two absolute defensive stalwarts, one on either side, between Marino and Siegs, all while Marino's got another 5 years at a very reasonable cap hit.
