My uncle died this morning so seeing this made my day a little better. Marino is an incredible get, especially at the 5x4.4 rate. He's an ideal partner for when we introduce Luke to the NHL. We either capitalize on our RHD depth (nuts saying that since we were bitching about it 2 weeks ago) and get a top 6 forward for Severson or we go into the season with an incredible blue line of Siegenthaler/Graves-Hamilton, Graves/Siegenthaler-Severson and Smith/Okhotyuk-Marino.

We almost can't help but cap out at this point (or close enough) given the RFA's still left to sign, unless Bratt and his agent get millitant and we have to send him off.
Ya, We're pretty much capped out. Being optimistic, we're talking Bratt@7, Vanacek@4, Wood@3, Zetterlund, Boqvist, and Thompson @1 (Thompson sent down), and Bernier on LTIR, we have around 1M in cap space.

I think we HAVE to dump Johnsson, and if we sign anyone else, we HAVE to dump Tatar.

That can’t be true. I’ve been reading the cheap owners struggle to get to the floor. :sarcasm:

What's in this move for the Pens exactly?
They got rid of that brutal Matheson contract while bringing in someone that fits their timeline pretty nicely. They get an upside LD on an ELC and gain a 3rd back after trading their 4th in the Petry deal. So they get out of long term cap while still getting a top 4 pairing dman to replace Marino. I get it.

In
Jeff Petry (3x6.25m)
Ryan Poehling (1x750k)
Ty Smith (1x863k)
23 3rd

Out
Mike Matheson (4x4.875m)
John Marino (5x4.4m)
23 4th

Johnsson is 100% cooked, Tatar will probably be dependent on what else they do like you said.

You'd have to think that young, smaller Dmen ready to make the jump to the NHL (or who just recently graduated to NHL) would have values close to what Ty Smith brought back.
Sandin / Nil lundkvist / Peeke / Rathbone etc.

Gonna join the "great deal" conga line here. In a cap-less world I'd love to see the Devils re-sign Severson, but this ain't a cap-less world, so if this move indeed portends the end of Damon's tenure I'll feel bad but I understand it. With Ty, I hate to give up on a guy so quickly, but with the Devils' defensive pipeline now what spot does he really have? Hope the guy goes to Pitt and rediscovers his game, even as I hope he doesn't help the Pens too much.

The great thing with this move really is the amount of flexibility it gives the Devils when it comes to the Severson situation, though. Fitz has all kinds of options open now in that regard:
-Keep Sevs and start the season with a pretty loaded right hand side of the blue line. It's still hard to say the Devils are ready to be a playoff team (even if just thanks to the East being pretty loaded at the top), but they clearly want to compete and get the young guys used to winning and fighting for a spot. If we end up with a good season and Sevs walks at the end, it will at least have been a good experience for a young, growing roster. And clearly, with what he's doing now, Fitz seems like he wants this team being legit this year.
-Trade Sevs now and try to get an impact forward, as has been discussed here.
-Trade Sevs at the deadline and consider taking picks in exchange. '23 draft class is nice and deep, so the picks for it are going to be worth extra in the eyes of many, whether the Devils opt to use more for themselves or package a couple for the impact player they want.

Again, I'd like to keep the guy, but with the talent the Devils have on the way and the cap hit Damon projects to carry moving forward as he hits 30 years old it'll be tough to justify it as the Devils look forward to a future with hopefully a number of good young players they want signed through their primes.

And man...Marino is good! Like, he's really good! So it's not like it's some schlub who's going to essentially replace Damon, it's a legitimate hockey move that gives the Devils two absolute defensive stalwarts, one on either side, between Marino and Siegs, all while Marino's got another 5 years at a very reasonable cap hit.

I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone on these boards in saying I'm tremendously sorry for your loss. My thoughts and best wishes are with you and your family.

If Fitzgerald is confident he can sign PK Subban for a one-year deal, then trading Severson makes sense. If not, you'd either have to play B. Smith on his off-hand side or rush up Nemec, which are probably less optimal ideas.

But I wouldn't "shop" Severson. He's got great value as a productive offensive defender with size and skating who -- despite the occasional brain-lock awful play -- is generally pretty good defensively.

I'd only trade Severson if he can be packaged for an impact player like a Tkachuk or Nylander. Interestingly, both Calgary and Toronto are pretty desperate at RD.

I've definitely heard/read that Smith can comfortably play on both sides, for what it's worth.
