I'm actually surprised the Penguins would do such a trade with us tbh...either they really really like Ty Smith, they are doing Fitz a solid because of their relationship with him, or they just hold us in such contempt they don't give a crap about giving us a defensive upgrade (a la the Caps trading us MarJo because we were so far behind them, a division trade didn't matter).

The rivalry stuff is overblown now. 8 team divisions means 1/4 of the teams can't be traded with. You're hurting yourself too much by doing that.

You're also competing with everyone directly in the division for 3-5 playoff spots every year, schedule or no schedule.

And yes there are rivals and then there are rivals, Devils-Pens is not the same as Devils-Flyers or Rangers but still a bit surprising to have a modest-sized trade like this when they could have easily flipped Marino elsewhere.

That still leaves 24 teams (most of whom you don’t compete directly for a playoff spot), which is more teams than what used to be in the league.

I don’t care in this case because I’m not high of Smith. But is also likely means Pittsburgh was down in Marino.

Fitz wasn't kidding when he said he was still looking for help on D
Or in goal.

These moves for better or worse change the entire dynamic of a bottom feeding team.

Build from the back out was gospel here forever.

Another interesting note for me was Fitz shipping out all the major complaints on HFBoards...

Not that we're always right (would like to think so, ha ha), but at least they're seein' what we're seein'! So far everything coming to fruition...

Time will play out what happens to both him and Zacha, but we just got so much better on blueline for this coming season....
Couldn't have said it better.

Amazing post. Love it.

To add to your Severson trade speculation, I wonder if Winnipeg would be interested. DeMelo is the only true RHD in their lineup at this moment and they are having issues with Dubois and his RFA status. He’d potentially look great next to Hischier or Hughes on the left wing.
Send Damon home lol.

Neil Pionk is also a very good RD, so the Jets have two strong guys there. They need a 3-RD but they're not exactly desperate, although I agree Severson would make sense there.

I don't think the Jets deal Dubois without getting a legit #2 center back in return. This rules out Montreal, despite their fans making even dumber trade offers for him than they did for the #2 overall pick ("Josh Anderson and Christian Dvorak for Dubois!" -- I've literally seen it more than once).

I think Winnipeg would only deal Dubois in a trade which included Dawson Mercer, and I feel the Devils would be imbeciles to go through with such a trade.

If they held the Devils with contempt, they wouldn't be doing this.

Maybe the phrase you're looking for is "they just look at us with boredom as they believe us to be an also-ran who would never be relevant anytime soon" so they don't give a crap about giving us a defensive upgrade.

Well they hold our chances of winning anytime soon in contempt is more what I was going for...but yeah.

Yeah, if you're impatient you end up being Chuck Fletcher.

I'd much prefer being Fitz.
It's amazing that a lot of people on social media have been extremely negative towards Fitzgerald's 2022 off-season.

Fitzgerald greatly upgraded the team's top problem in goal with the acquisition of Vitek Vanicek. He greatly upgraded the top 6 with Ondrej Palat and upgraded the middle 6/center depth with Erik Haula. He had a great draft which may have singularly solved the Devils organizational weaknesses at both RD and in goal. Now, he upgraded the D immensely by moving out a liability in Ty Smith and getting a great defensive stalwart and penalty killer at RD with John Marino.

The Devils are looking pretty formidable, and I'm not sure Mr. Fitzgerald is done yet.

Not many teams are willing to trade a defenseman as cheap as Smith for one like Marino. That's why the trade was made and that's why it's a big challenge for Pittsburgh to do this with another team.

Ah Pionk. Dude I watch all of the Jets games too. How I forgot Pionk I’ll never know. Disregard my post lol

i would really love to see them to keep all the d's for next season.

siegenthaler, graves, b.smith, okhotyuk/bahl
hamilton, severson, marino

the right side depth and experience would also allow the team to bring in luke hughes after the college season, if he is interested.

if fitz can move johnsson for little to no cap. he will have 15 million to sign bratt (7), vanecek (3) and fill out the roster with 3 more forwards.

I like the looks of that top 4 moving forward. Maybe not this year, but in the future (and until Nemec is ready). Assuming of course Severson is moved, which it seems pretty likely now. Not sure it makes sense to have 3 RHD signed long term with Nemec in the fold. Although you can never have too many good defensemen I guess.

I’m guessing he’s here at least until the deadline. May just play out his contract.

I guess depends on where we end up. If we are in the playoff hunt, yea he'll prob stay. If not, maybe trade him and call up Nemec.

That’s bad for pitt.

Marino is slightly overpaid based on metrics & impact, but that’s fine. I do wonder what this does with Severson given how they drafted nemec, got Marino, and have Hamilton for another 6 years

Overpaid at the time, but d-men have been getting overpaid for the last how many years. It's a fine contract right now and in the future.

I still don’t know what the hell happened to Ty’s skating. He was absolutely fine in his rookie year, not a burner at all but adequate.

It’s like he got Giloolied between seasons by someone to clear space. He had to be hurt last year.
