Nice surprise today. We don't have to talk about Ty Smith's gamebreaking gaffes anymore..!

But why must this mean automatically Sevs is out, can't we keep good things?
Asset management. No point in committing 6M+ (and term) to Severson, while we have Hamilton (and potentially Hughes/Nemec) to play on PP and 5v5 would have to be split pretty evenly between him, Hamilton and Marino.

I just don't see a scenario he's here longer than this season and more specifically passed the deadline. We aren't going to be pay our right side in excess of 20 million per year which is probably what it would cost.

Because Nemec is coming in as little as one year and you can't have Hamilton, Severson and Marino all locked up for 5+ years.

It makes more sense to get assets for Severson and have Nemec on his ELC.

Ah, man....

A good problem to have but it would really be nice to somehow keep Severson, i still think he can be pivotal on this team, particularly if the team is on the winning side of things.

How normal is it for a D to play off on their off side.... ?

I'm trying to think...is there anybody like that in the league today?
With a trash eye?

We could've signed Kuemper.

Tatar can still be a useful player who can chip in. Johnsson can go for Zetterlund to become our pest.
If Zetterlund isn't given a real shot and not on this team in some capacity I'll be pissed.

What an absolutely terrific trade. I cannot say it enough. Absolutely outstanding. The Devils turned a major weakness in last year's performance -- Ty Smith's disappointing regression made him a near-constant liability -- into precisely what the Devils needed in strong-skating, ace defensive stalwart John Marino.

John Marino rates excellently across the board -- better than any other RD the Devils have had in awhile -- in positioning, gap control, one-on-one defense and defense against the rush. He is an excellent penalty killer who is ok at blocking shots and plays physical when need be without going out of his way to seek physicality. He's just a smart, steady shut-down RD and the Devils got him for a 3rd round pick and a player who it was imperative to deal anyway. His contract is very good, both in amount and term.

The Devils are a far better team than they were yesterday.

GM Tom Fitzgerald deserves high accolades. In little over two years, he has turned the worst blueline in the Eastern Conference into an absolute strength with a wealth of young talent on the way. The huge signing of Hamilton combined with absolute winning trades for Siegenthaler, Graves and now Marino. As of this moment, I'd say the 3-LD slot is now a camp battle between Brendan Smith, Nikita Okhotyuk and Kevin Bahl. So, the blueline looks like:

Graves-Hamilton
Siegenthaler-Severson
B.Smith-Marino

That's one heck of a blueline for New Jersey, the best the Devils have had in many years.

Keep in mind, Fitzgerald may not be done. As Nemec and Luke Hughes might both be NHL ready by next year and two years away at the very, very most... well, Fitzgerald now can afford to dangle Severson for a big-time winger if he so chooses. Could Severson represent a big potential piece of a package for two oft-rumored-to-be-traded big-time wingers like Matt Tkachuk or William Nylander? Both Calgary and Toronto are absolutely desperate at RD right now while the Devils can clearly afford to add in a high-level LD prospect with their organizational wealth at that position. I'm not Fitzgerald, but I'd be willing to offer the Flames Severson+Mukhamadullin+Holtz as a starting point for Tkachuk. If Tkachuk is not available, I'd offer the same package as a finishing point for Nylander.

We should also be thrilled to go into camp with what we have on the blueline. If the Devils don't look poised for a run at the deadline, they will have two of the biggest trade chips on the market in Graves and Severson, who are destined to be replaced by L. Hughes and Nemec. Because we're potentially looking at a future blueline of almost absurd talent by 2023-24:

Okhotyuk-Hamilton
Siegenthaler-Nemec
L. Hughes-Marino

The Devils have greatly improved the goaltending situation with Vitek Vanicek. They have greatly improved the top 6 with Ondrej Palat while improving the bottom 6 with Erik Haula. They greatly improved an already-elite prospect pool with an excellent draft. Now, they have greatly improved the blueline by moving out Ty Smith and replacing him with John Marino. It's been an extraordinarily great off-season for the New Jersey Devils.

Another interesting note for me was Fitz shipping out all the major complaints on HFBoards...

Not that we're always right (would like to think so, ha ha), but at least they're seein' what we're seein'! So far everything coming to fruition...

Time will play out what happens to both him and Zacha, but we just got so much better on blueline for this coming season....

I mean it is kind of became obvious who’s time had run out. Smith was brutal and was getting scratched at the end for Bahl and Okhotiuk. Johnsson wasn’t playing much so we’ll see and Zacha wasn’t playing as much as he was before, there clearly wasn’t a ton of belief in him anymore and it seemed like it was obviously time after a bit of a down year production wise.

Somebody had to go for the new additions and these seem like the obvious ones. Not sure who else makes sense.

Amazing post. Love it.

To add to your Severson trade speculation, I wonder if Winnipeg would be interested. DeMelo is the only true RHD in their lineup at this moment and they are having issues with Dubois and his RFA status. He’d potentially look great next to Hischier or Hughes on the left wing.

I kept trolling my friend who came over one night (who doesn't watch hockey but knows football) while the Devils were playing the Pens the season before this last one and told him this guy on the Pens is the son of Dan Marino.

He actually believed me lol.
Well John does wear isotoner gloves

Yeah, that is definitely right, I guess what I was getting at further was that they don't always action on it (the GM's). They hold on, delay, and linger and we talk about it on this forum for ages. And then it makes it look like the front office is seeing a different game vs. us (hfboard armchairs)

Looks like Fitz was ready and fed up of all these crap results.....

I'm actually surprised the Penguins would do such a trade with us tbh...either they really really like Ty Smith, they are doing Fitz a solid because of their relationship with him, or they just hold us in such contempt they don't give a crap about giving us a defensive upgrade (a la the Caps trading us MarJo because we were so far behind them, a division trade didn't matter).

Yeah Fitz and everyone else sees it to. It’s just a lot easier said than done to fix it. Fitz has been making calls and waiting for the right move. Patience is important as a GM.

I think you’re just undervaluing Ty Smith. And it cleared up necessary cap space for the Jeff Petry trade who they clearly wanted.

They get a 3rd and 4th round pick as well.
