What an absolutely terrific trade. I cannot say it enough. Absolutely outstanding. The Devils turned a major weakness in last year's performance -- Ty Smith's disappointing regression made him a near-constant liability -- into precisely what the Devils needed in strong-skating, ace defensive stalwart John Marino.
John Marino rates excellently across the board -- better than any other RD the Devils have had in awhile -- in positioning, gap control, one-on-one defense and defense against the rush. He is an excellent penalty killer who is ok at blocking shots and plays physical when need be without going out of his way to seek physicality. He's just a smart, steady shut-down RD and the Devils got him for a 3rd round pick and a player who it was imperative to deal anyway. His contract is very good, both in amount and term.
The Devils are a far better team than they were yesterday.
GM Tom Fitzgerald deserves high accolades. In little over two years, he has turned the worst blueline in the Eastern Conference into an absolute strength with a wealth of young talent on the way. The huge signing of Hamilton combined with absolute winning trades for Siegenthaler, Graves and now Marino. As of this moment, I'd say the 3-LD slot is now a camp battle between Brendan Smith, Nikita Okhotyuk and Kevin Bahl. So, the blueline looks like:
Graves-Hamilton
Siegenthaler-Severson
B.Smith-Marino
That's one heck of a blueline for New Jersey, the best the Devils have had in many years.
Keep in mind, Fitzgerald may not be done. As Nemec and Luke Hughes might both be NHL ready by next year and two years away at the very, very most... well, Fitzgerald now can afford to dangle Severson for a big-time winger if he so chooses. Could Severson represent a big potential piece of a package for two oft-rumored-to-be-traded big-time wingers like Matt Tkachuk or William Nylander? Both Calgary and Toronto are absolutely desperate at RD right now while the Devils can clearly afford to add in a high-level LD prospect with their organizational wealth at that position. I'm not Fitzgerald, but I'd be willing to offer the Flames Severson+Mukhamadullin+Holtz as a starting point for Tkachuk. If Tkachuk is not available, I'd offer the same package as a finishing point for Nylander.
We should also be thrilled to go into camp with what we have on the blueline. If the Devils don't look poised for a run at the deadline, they will have two of the biggest trade chips on the market in Graves and Severson, who are destined to be replaced by L. Hughes and Nemec. Because we're potentially looking at a future blueline of almost absurd talent by 2023-24:
Okhotyuk-Hamilton
Siegenthaler-Nemec
L. Hughes-Marino
The Devils have greatly improved the goaltending situation with Vitek Vanicek. They have greatly improved the top 6 with Ondrej Palat while improving the bottom 6 with Erik Haula. They greatly improved an already-elite prospect pool with an excellent draft. Now, they have greatly improved the blueline by moving out Ty Smith and replacing him with John Marino. It's been an extraordinarily great off-season for the New Jersey Devils.
