Yeah but Marino is a fine player and much further along in realizing his development.

This deal is a steal. It’s a great deal, the best Fitz has ever made.

Why would the Penguins do this? It’s an insanely poor move by them and they are usually very shrewd.

I agree. I think this deal makes too much sense for us. Long term it's difficult to see where Smith fits in to how this blueline is being built, where as Marino makes ton of sense with how we are building

Helps their Cap most likely. Probably why they did it.

love this move so much. not really wanting to give up on severson yet, but if we do a Severson + Bratt for Tkachuk trade…

in all seriousness, this may be the best our Right side has looked / will look in the last decade at least.

I'm old enough to remember the summer of Shero when we were heading into the season with Subban - Severson - Vatanen.

I thought that was total hockey. f*** me, how wrong was I?

I wouldn't be totally shocked if Smith looks a bit better in Pittsburgh but he's still not gonna be the PPQB there until Letang turns the bone dust. If they're relying on him for 5v5, he better get some calf implants to become a better skater.

Still lots of potential there

Everything still rides on Luke and Simon from my point of view. We're gonna still need a few years to see it blossom...but this year is no doubt going to be the beginning.

I think Holtz is the biggest question mark. If he hits his potential this team is going to be out of this world in a few years. I have faith in Luke and Nemec with how the defense is constructed.

Not saying anything positive or negative but I just don't see Holtz as critical to the teams success in the grand scheme of things... I mean yeah we'll benefit if he's good.
But I'm more interested in 2 Dmen that can be cornerstones for a decade

Winger, even a top line one. Simply doesn't have the same value as top potential top pairing Dmen

Yeah the weird thing, you can argue that Holtz has an more cushy job just ripping shots from Hughes but he's also not the fleetest of foot so it hinders him a lot. While Nemec + Hughes are way more gifted and since they'll be surrounded in an above average defense core I think they're most likely to hit. I personally think both dmen will be good, but the lack of no top line winger would hurt them more if Holtz can't since he was basically drafted to ride shotgun with Jack if that makes sense.

This is great! Not only do we get the defense-first RHD we've desperately needed for years, we get him young and cost-controlled. Smith was extraneous on the roster and losing him is not a major problem for us. And, just as nice, this pretty much guarantees Nemec gets a full season in the AHL (hopefully paired with Okhotiuk) and removes the temptation for us to rush him to the NHL.

Jeez people are actually crying over losing Ty Smith in Twitter. They seem to have way more believe in his bounce back, or they don't actually watch the games.

I think they are hoping Nemec can make an impact in the AHL where they can move on from Severson and bring him up before the trade deadline or maybe sooner.

I like this.

What can we get for Severson, and would it make sense to pull the trigger on it sooner rather than later?
