Can I be explained to why doing anything thats considered a 'risk' is bad in a rebuild?

all just today ive seen people say;
- you cant sign UFAs, most end up bad deals and nobody wants to go to the swamp
- you cant trade future assets, were rebuilding and need them all
- you cant trade young players because their value is low and you need them all

so can someone explain to me what f***ing option Fitzgerald has to improve the team, if you all put such suffocating restrictions on him?

It’s been a broken record for the past month now...

- Draft magic beans and cross your fingers that the young players we have today will eventually carry this team forward. They have to do it within 3 to 4 years or else they’ll be close to 30 and we all know we can’t sign anyone past 30.

This is basically the plan that’s expected by the majority of this board.... patience, bottom #5 picks and a lot of luck.

By the way, if the Devils are sitting comfortably in the 4 or 5 hole in the draft, I would actually root for them NOT to win either of the two lotteries. Since we are going to be bad for a few more years, and the NHL changed the rule that you can only win a certain number of lotteries, I'd rather them stay in that spot without a clear-cut number one pick this year. Hopefully that spot is enough to draft Luke Hughes.

How much can we send to Seattle to take Subban in the expansion draft?
Did you watch the game? Subban was our best player today in my opinion. You could tell he was playing hard every shift, was a one man breakout at times and had a goal and an assist.

Would rather Clarke or Power than Hughes. Doesn’t everyone start with a clean slate next year when that rule kicks in? I may be wrong but I thought that’s what people have said.

Yeah, the next two years AFTER this one are the ones to win the lottery in. Specifically 2022.

this year doesn't count towards that. That rule starts in 2022. NHL Draft Lottery changes announced for 2021

It'd take 1st round pick or an equivalent prospect, which makes it pointless. The Devils, with lots of cap space, should actually acquire bad contracts with assets on top of them, rather than pay hefty prices for other teams to take their own bad contracts.

Zero chance wed draft anyone over Hughes if hes there

you already know the organization is drooling at the thought of getting one of Jack's brothers
I would say it’s far from zero chance. If they like Clarke or Power more than Hughes as I do than I expect they’d take one of them rather than just taking Luke because he’s Jack’s brother.

Theyre all similarly ranked in the top-5

He wouldnt be picked because hes Jacks brother. Hed be picked because hes on the same level as the other two AND is Jacks brother

That matters a lot more than people want to think.

That would certainly be an interesting discussion if it comes to pass. Did any of the teams with a Staal brother pass on one of the others when they were clearly on the level of guys on the board?

I'm not for picking a guy out of nepotism but as we saw with Scotty Nieds it CAN matter in the long run whether you link them up or not.

Just because they’re similarly ranked in general by the media doesn’t mean the devils scouting department doesn’t have certain players ranked higher than others.

I know it probably matters because it would please a lot of fans especially the ones who don’t pay much attention to and watch all the prospects but I hope they take who they think will be the best player for this team.

Owen Power and Brandt Clarke are not and should not be above Luke Hughes by any sort of margin that can be considered a 'gap'

Owen Power is hyped more because he has size; Brandt Clarke is hyped just about the same

If you told the fans and Jack you took one of those two over Luke 'yet we had them similarly ranked', everyone should be pissed.

youre talking about setting up the dynamic of the Hughes brothers on your team for a decade or more, something that can draw in thousands of fans and become its own brand. And youre going to pass all of that up for... a few points difference in some deep analytics report? One being 1A and another being 1B?

and we both know for a fact Luke Hughes will be highly ranked because hes everything Fitzgerald has ever commented on in a player; incredible skater, smart, good size, hard worker, etc.. he plays for the USNDTP and is the best skater in the draft

If we are any pick of 1-4 and Luke is available and we pass on him; you better f***ing hope that kid turns into an absolute monster or stand the chance if having to goodbye to Jack the first chance he gets at UFA

i used to think that way too, now i don't care. we shouldn't be drafting based on hypothetical contract situations a decade from now.
But why not when the brother has been considered a top-5 pick for over a year now?

this isnt some riser pick whod be seen as a reach; its Luke f***ing Hughes, a kid whos been touted as a BETTER skater than QUINN HUGHES.

If Jack is going to bail because we didn't think his brother was the right pick then Jack should f*** right off. Put on your big boy pants and be a professional.
