Uh okay, most of those guys were signed years ago. The cap has increased then, thus contracts are getting bigger. This isn't rocket science. Or do you think Toews deserves more than Crosby too?

Maatta and goligoski were signed in the last year and are clearly wayyyy better deals for much better dmen

Was wondering the same? Where will the Wings find the cap space for Mrazek?

You can be 10% over the cap during the season, And since DDK took the team to arbitration plus Holland took Mrazek to arbitration Detroit will get a 2nd buy out here shortly after Mrazek resigns. It wouldn't shock me if Holland doesn't buy out Howard then he will have to do something possibly some kind of trade here maybe move Smith for a pick or prospect. But we Wing fans don't disagree that Holland isn't putting this team in cap hell here.

90% of Detroit fans in this thread are acting like it's impossible for any other fanbases to have watched Detroit games or have ever seen DeKeyser play.

We must be in different threads. I'm the one or one of the few that made that comment, and I'm a Blues fan.

This is a fair deal for his caliber of player and UFA years in today's market.

Being in the same division and playing the last 2 years against them in the playoffs, I've yet to see DeKeyser do something noticeable defensively or offensively.

Dekeyser got low end #3 money, problem is that hes not a #3. He's somewhere between a #3 and #4, 4M at the most for me.

fair deal.

as a wings fan i've criticised heaps of contracts they've given out in the past. helm and weiss being good examples (not to mention thinking that nielsen was pretty steep in term anyway), but there is nothing wrong with this deal. d-men with DD's quality don't grow on trees. for me he's our best d-man right now and although he's no subban or weber or suter, he's a young, complete no 2-3 who you can trust in all situations.

People seem to forget DD is all Detroit really has in the way of stable top 4 defensemen.

Oh no, overpaid by a small amount. Look at Ericsson's contract if you want to talk about an albatross.

The good ol' HFBoards overreaction, like clockwork. Is this a hockey site or what? DeKeyser has arguably been Detroit's most reliable defenseman.

Decent contract for both sides.

Don't ever change, HFBoards

The problem is you have Dekeyser at $5 per

Then you have guys like
Hjalmarsson at $4.1
Brodie at $4.6
Goligoski at $4.6
Stralman at $4.5
Tanev at $4.4
Brodin at $4.1
Maatta at $4.0

Detroit definitely overpaid here, albeit not atrocios, but they handed out a contract based on desperation of their blue line and not because DDK is worth that

Cherry picking players doesn't balance the fact that some of these guys signed years ago. How can you compare the contracts given the different context?

Then congrats, you have an opinion. Don't act like anybody who doesn't share it is just ignorant.

I'm suprised people think this is a bad deal for Detroit. What did people expect? He's a good second pairing defensemen with still room to improve. Good signing for the wings.

Yeah no in what world is Goligoski getting $4.6 million? Try more like $5.475 million for the next 5 years or so.

That's a lot of money for a guy with no offense. He's probably worth it to us, given the deplorable state of our blue line, though.

Number 3 and 4 defensemen get more money than 4m typically when they're that close to ufa.

Goligoski's cap hit is 5.475. Maatta's deal has more RFA years.

And Goligoskis deal was virtually an open market UFA deal

Being an RFA re-upping with your team (and being a lesser player) should give Detroit way more than a $475k premium discount

I've yet to see a legitimate argument for why it is bad though. You can have your opinion, just back it up. For a solid top 4 defender, with 5/6 UFA years, and in today's market, that's the going rate.

Whenever I watch Detroit play, I figure that DeKeyser looks to be a central piece of the wings blue line in the future. That being said, he seemed to be more of a player that does his job without making mistakes, but also without much flare. He's a Johnny Oduya or Willie Mitchell. Not sure how you commit that much term and money to a guy like that, especially when Klingberg just got 4.75m.

He is very clearly a middle pair dman. Problem is if you are giving a 2nd pair guy $5+ mil, he better be a pretty standout 2nd pair guy, either on the offensive side or defensive side and DDK is not really either, I think most would agree

That's so far from true. Dekeyser IS an outstanding shutdown defenseman, and really the only one on Detroit who is good in that role.

I'm thrilled with this deal I thought he'd get more actually. I'm thinking the vast majority of people here don't even know who he is or are just looking at offensive stats. Best dman on Detroit by a lot and impending UFA.

He'd be a UFA next season, his RFA status has very little impact on the deal. Just because you extend with your team, doesn't mean there should be a discount. It's great if you get one, but it doesn't mean you get one.
