Umm... what? Lol

EDIT: Admittedly, I haven't watched much of DeKeyser (due to not being a Wings fan) but this is a surprising deal in terms of both length and dollar value. Detroit, very obviously, sees value in him.

Obviously Holland must think that DDK is our future #1 D man or something like that. He's 26 years old so the 6 year term isn't that bad it still takes him pretty much through his prime years. The $5 million might be a tad high $4.5 million might've been a little better but this is a fair deal for him. This is probably similar to what Trouba will sign for.

Wow, that's a brutal contract. I guess they're really desperate.

Detroit has had a terrible time trying to acquire top 4 defenseman the past few years. I guess overpaying to keep them in the fold long term is their plan going forward.

People also realize, he was going to be a UFA next summer right? He's a good top 4 defender and 5 of those years are UFA years.

3 times already you said "this is probably what Trouba will sign for" and while that is true, the big difference is that Trouba is, at least, GOOD.

It's going rate for someone that is good.

Not for someone of DD's caliber.

DD is a top 4 D on basically every single team in the NHL. Someone doesn't watch him play.
That is pretty brutal.

What exactly is brutal about this? You do know he would have been a UFA next year right? This is basically the exact going rate for a top 4D nowadays and he's young enough to still be able to reach another gear.

Seems like 500k overpayment for a good not great 2nd pair dman. He better continue develop or else this turns into a bad deal

yea, im sure someone from the western conference has seen him more than eastern conference posters

I've always followed the Wings and Dekeyser. They were the rival that I actually respected. Continued to watch them when they went to the East. In today's world the internet allows people to watch games of multiple teams, whenever you want.

Cody Ceci is probably feeling pretty good right now

Completely different situations. DK had arbitration rights and was a year from UFA which gave his camp more leverage in these negotiations. Ceci and camp do not hold the same cards.

It's pretty brutal because he's a blackhole possession wise and doesn't really generate anything on the ice either. He's really not a 5M dollar defender. I don't even think he's worth a penny over 4M. You're going to say ~1M overpaid isn't a big deal but with the Red Wings cap situation, I'd say it's a pretty damn big deal. He's going to be 27 years old this season... that isn't young. Nothing is suggesting he's trending upwards in anything. If you think it's a good contract... I don't know what to say but good luck.

And now the Red Wings long-term cap is becoming pretty bad as well. Not sure I like any of their recent moves and this just really shows me they are really desperate.
