Funny, you probably think saying this makes you sound smart, but it just makes it obvious that you have no idea what goes into an NHL contract.

A lot of people are missing the concept of UFA years vs RFA years.

No they dont, a high end #3 gets about 5.5M/5.75M (basically a fringe #2, those are the guys who can play on a top pair), low end #3's get around 5M (i don't consider Dekeyser a #3 tho). Look at how much Leddy, Goligoski, Petry, Niskanen got.

I mean Jason Demers just got 4.5M as a UFA, i'd take him over Dekeyser. The best comparable for Dekeyser is Demers, they both just recently signed their contracts.

And im obviously only talking about the dmen who got paid market value money, no point in mentioning guys like Stralman, Tanev etc. (players who are underpaid, in Stralman's case hes actually a very good top pairing dman).

Yeah and look what Jeff Petry got from Montreal, 6 years $33 million or a AAV of $5.5M per and his best year was 25 points about 6 points less then DDK best year at 31 points their numbers are pretty similar. None of us Wing fans think DDK is worth $5 million per maybe around $4 million to $4.5 million per especially since he's a limited offensive D man. For this kind of money he had better start working on his offensive game.

He's so underrated. I think this is exactly fair value.

Yea, I'm with you on this one.

My initial reaction was a slight overpayment, but they are eating up 5 years of UFA, so I think the price is totally justifiable. The guy is easily a top-4 Dman, and this is a fair cost of doing business.

Average. Detroit can't afford to lose him, and he had all of the leverage.

Not a great value, but for Detroit, its good.

I would say +/- 1M overpaid... maybe it will become a steel in the long run

if it's the price to pay for that type of DMan, I hope that WAS is ready because Alzner will be close to 7M per

Games are won?
getting more GF than GA
1 GF beat 0GA
2 GF beats 1GA
3 Gf beats 2 GA
4 GF beats 3 GA

Look at goal production:

#1-5 dmen score 9 EVG or better.
175 forwards (teams top 6) score equal or better.
35 times more forwards produce equal or Better goal totals.

#11 to #15 D
65 Forwards (fwd7-8)
6.5 times more forwards produce Equal or better

#16 to #30 D
60 forwards (#9-10)
4 times more forwards produce equal or better

taking the top 30 D
300 forwards are equal or better in Goal production.

So who do you think should have the puck?
Get it to the forwards ASAP.

you want Dmen with High EVA/60
and
the best expected GA d in the game.

Deykeyser:
5th hardest Comp/ZS in league.
#55 D .65 EVA/60
Top 40 HSCA D
#55 SA/60 D
#55 EVGA/60 D
one of the 10 best allround even off/def D

not a strong PKGA D.

He is not one of those off d that are complete S.....shows defensively.
who give a team zero chance of winning a cup.

Guys like:
Barrie
Schultz
Faulk

He isn't the kind of deal the best EVGA/PKGA d in the game the last 2 years is.

I'm glad we locked him up and I kind of wish we added a little more term. Now we just need to ship out some forwards to build around Larkin/DeKeyser/Mrazek.

Except Stralman is a god possession wise and elite defensively while DeKesyser is terrible possession wise and not good defensively.

He's a hard-worker which coaches like, but he's not worth 5 mill for 6 yrs at all.

He also gets great zone starts, Dekeyser does not. Despite what some people think, usage has a massive impact on "possession".

I sort of expected this deal whether DD actually deserves it or not. This is the norm for #3 defenders nowadays and the Red Wings are handcuffed in terms of options. Not a terrible deal but not a good one either, the people who say it's fair are right on point.

why would people think otherwise? dzone starts and quality of linemates has everything to do with possession stats.

thats why HERO charts are meaningless, it doesnt show you the entire picture.

NJ bought 3 UFA years with Larsson. DET bought 5 UFA years with Dekeyser.

People in this thread need to learn how contracts work with (what they think are) these awful comparables.

You'd be amazed at some of the arguments that I've had with people on this site then.

Yep, this is where the battle of Analytics vs Eye Test always reaches a stalemate. Analytics are fantastic when used in concert with context. When that doesn't happen, people point to the numbers and say "too much for DeKeyser". And on and on it goes...
