Don't kid yourself, centers are a HUGE part of a team's D-zone coverage. Losing Stepan effects every single defenseman on this team.

I said that and no one would acknowledge it. Centers are ****ing huge defensively. You have a bad defensive C and team D can be really severed and non cohesive. Makes it very hard.

The #1 reason the Leafs are consistently among the worst defensive teams in the NHL, is their lack of defensive play from their centers. Throws the entire forward corp off, forward support defensively for them is a complete joke, and when a team gets a good cycle going, the opposing team is guaranteed a good 4-5 shot attempts, because the Leafs are so ****ing inefficient at puck support along the boards.

It's an extreme example, but we look like the ****ing Leafs with no Derek Stepan (and Dan Boyle).

It's one of the reasons the Bruins are such an excellent team, especially in the playoffs.

I actually don't think it's too big of a stretch. Man defense puts a ton of pressure on your forwards to help as dmen run around chasing players. Now MSL and Miller/Hayes are taking prime responsibility in the d zone.

Tomorrow is 4 weeks he's been out. Looks like it will be closer to 6 weeks than 4. Either way, he has to miss at least 4 more games, but it would help if he were skating by now or very soon.

They're probably not going to say when he'll start skating until he actually starts skating

They won't say anything. One of the beat guys will report the sighting. The team, like usual, won't acknowledge anything until the last moment.

Nice little lull in the schedule. 2 games over the next 10 days. Good opportunity for Step to heal up. Hopefully he will be ready to go on 11/3 vs STL when he is first eligible to return.

The fact that "as far as he knows" is even said is encouraging. Implies that Step is likely capable of skating one of those days IMO.

We've been fine without him. He's also injury prone. I say we trade him while he still has value.

He missed all of camp and hasn't even stepped foot on the ice yet. More importantly, the Rangers have won 3 in a row.

Not only should he not be rushed back, but I don't see a scenario where hes ready 11/3 anyway.
