I think there is more going on here than him just being lazy. He seems to have lost a step. Some players lose that step earlier than others. He is not young anymore at 30. Also, he is not shooting nearly as much as he used to with Calgary…some of that has to do with losing that step as well.

Yes, he had better linemates in Calgary, but he’s not the same player he was back then either…

I don’t even put it 100% work now when my job is consistently on the line

I also thought he didn't look as quick when we played Columbus. When he was with Calgary he was always a threat and the scariest player in the lineup. That just wasn't there in my last viewing. Looking at his stats i'm not shocked.

Players usually start slowly declining around 30, this is a plummeting.

Could be injury. Players go through season-long things they just wait till offseason to get fixed.

Could be a bad offseason/laziness. Seems like the offseason really sets up the season for some guys, and Johnny would not seem a self-guided fitness freak. New environment, new system, new workout routines, new everything, and a guy who was always just naturally very good. Now maybe he has to work a bit more, and that ain’t necessarily what he’s had to do before.

I think hes kind of at a stage of just getting through the year on a bad team. Not the best way to think as a player paid a lot of money but I assume hes at the point of why bother going 100% in a lost year. Every so often hes the old Gaudreau like when he was amped up against Calgary and many times he makes beautiful plays that dont get finished. Im not super worried just yet like I said but it will soon get there if things dont change as the team does

I think there's some truth to that and I truly hope he'd wake up if the team becomes competitive. Also new coach might have been a factor early on. That said for a veteran guy getting paid a lot of money you'd hope he's a big part of making the team competitive in the first place... on a human level I get it though, he has a baby at home and hockey probably doesn't seem quite as important as it might have 2 years ago and the team again aren't going anywhere. But if he wants to stay at top form, it's going to take more work every year as he gets older.

I still dont have a huge issue with Johnny's play as a Jacket.

Our big acquisitions are great players that don't carry the play on their own. We have elite complimentary pieces. Doesn't work on their own.

It was kind of known by Calgary fans that Gaudreau was a guy that wasn't into working out, and following a clean diet.

The guys that sustain into their 30s are usually the fitness freaks.

After a slow start with a new coach and new system, he has 35 points in his last 38 games, including 17 points in his last 15.

That's still not up to his standard, but the Jackets are pretty terrible and they play a very low risk offensive game.

It's really difficult for most to understand how many changes he had in a few short years and how that would affect his play, despite the big contract. New wife, new family, new city (after knowing only one for 8 years) etc.

I know that he was one of the greatest Flames of all time for practically the whole time he was in Calgary. Yet without a bounce-back of sorts to something close to what he was, the scoffers will scoff. He was a top 5 to 10 winger in the league for a few years and was rightfully in the Hart conversation in his final year in Calgary. But it is what it is. Just hoping he continues to move in the right direction which it seems he is. It'd be nice to see Columbus have some success going forward too.
