So how big of a concern is this becoming for Columbus?

Goes from
40G/115pts with Calgary in his last season

To
21G/74pts

To
11G/52pts pace

It’s not like he’s getting any younger either

I don't expect to see Gaudreau ever going back to his previous point production. Kid is going through the motions until he can walk away from the game.

He had a great run and paved the way for a lot of undersized players.

Got to think this is scaring teams away from giving guys entering their 30s these massive long term contracts in a new system regardless of how Wel they performed before

It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens with Draisaitl's next contract. Whether that's out on the open market or with Edmonton. Draisaitl is UFA after next season, a year before McDavid reaches UFA. I don't see him signing a 1 year deal to wait and see what McDavid does when he'd be on the wrong side of 30 looking for a long term commitment.

John got his contract. He's got a family now, so Im sure that's priority for him. He couldn't care less about a cup.

Doubt it. GM jobs are at stake, and its incredibly difficult to acquire top talent. They simply outbid each other

Depends. With the team so young it has many issues and often gets stuck in a rush 1 and done style. He has games he makes magic and others if the announcers didnt say his name youd forget he was playing. As the kids like Fantilli/Johnson/etc grow into bigger roles Id like to think Johnny picks it up. If the team around him really starts to improve over the next year or 2 and he doesnt smarten up then it would be devastating

But when those “top talents” turn into 3rd liners paid $9-$10M+? That’s a job ending mistake

For sure, but it matters less when youre already one year away from being fired.

Plus Huberdeau and Gaudreau have been top liners for a while before. They were getting overpaid for sure, but the fell off such a big cliff even compared to previous years that its almost laughable.

I wonder if the money stays the same, or even goes higher, but they shorten the deals to 4 years max?

Sure and on the bright side the Jackets got Calgary's best checker.......

Imagine your employer giving you an 8 years 100% guaranteed contract for work that will likely lead to your retirement. How many people would honestly put 100% effort in the work?

Columbus's hope at this point is that Fantilli turns out to be a monster. Kekäläinen seems utterly incapable of acquiring a proper 1C.

Gaudreau still leads the team on points, he just doesn't have much to work with. Kekäläinen shouldn't have prioritized bringing in high profile wingers like Gaudreau and Laine until getting the team set up with a center.

Outbidding each other makes sense when you’re getting a high end guy in year 1 and it’s someone else’s problem in year 8. If they’re getting a dogshit middle 6er that doesn’t care to backcheck in year 1 more often than not they’ll stop bidding as much or bid less years.

And how would they know that? Based on Johnny G and Huberdeau's performance history.

They'd probably expect ppg wingers, not 115 pts wingers. But thats still far better than what theyre doing now

Part of me worries about his size/style, losing a step or edge can be devastating to those dudes, but then I think of Giroux and how he kinda got it back. Idk man, but it wouldn’t be crazy either way. Obviously Giroux is bigger, but just thinkin of smart vision sorta players

I think hes kind of at a stage of just getting through the year on a bad team. Not the best way to think as a player paid a lot of money but I assume hes at the point of why bother going 100% in a lost year. Every so often hes the old Gaudreau like when he was amped up against Calgary and many times he makes beautiful plays that dont get finished. Im not super worried just yet like I said but it will soon get there if things dont change as the team does
