After a slow start with a new coach and new system, he has 35 points in his last 38 games, including 17 points in his last 15.

That's still not up to his standard, but the Jackets are pretty terrible and they play a very low risk offensive game.

Losing Laine, as a potential linemate, is going to hurt his production. Playing anywhere near PPG, when both of your linemates have never cracked 50 points is a feat. Jenner and Roslovic would be great depth pieces on most teams, but Gaudreau has no shot at a 100ish points playing with them.

Losing Laine is good for him, just like him playing better with Jenner than most of the other forwards. The issue is the 3rd forward.Marchenko looks good there but the Russian line is our best by a mile. Moving forward there are options with guys like Fantilli/Johnson though

The toughest thing is they haven't really given him anyone who can set him up. He's obviously still an elite playmaker - he has more assists than any other Jacket has points. But he has to create most of his shot attempts himself, which is a shame because getting lost in coverage and anticipating around the net are some of his best attributes.

Fair enough but it was a bad signing at the time and will be a problem when all their young guys need to re up if they reach their potential.

Why? Roslovics 4mil is off the books this year and 12.7mil from Laine/Gudbranson after 2 more years depending on what happens with Laine. They dont have cap issues

I'm thinking in about 4 of 5 years time when their young guys and future draft picks might come up.

Then again the cap might go up enough to offset that.

I just thought Columbus was buying too high on Johnny.

If he wasn't now he is

That's a cheap hit even if Johnny was looking down too much there.

Yeah, thankfully Johnny looks up at the last moment, so the hit wasn't right to the head. Hitting a guy with that kind of force, when he's engaged in a puck battle with another player is pretty cheap.

Looks like more like tried to avoid it. Trocheck is coming that way before Johnny loses the puck. Rempe comes down a little too hard on the stick and might warrant a slashing call there, but most refs probably don't call it. Slashing aside, Johnny loses the puck and Trocheck is coming. His feet both turn the right in a stop as his body starts to turn. To me this looks like he recognizes the player is in a bad situation and tries to not make a big hit. There wasn't much room between the 2 players but it seems Trocheck was trying to get through at the last moment.

It also looked like Johnny reaches back and nearly whacks Rempe in the arm while Trocheck is coming through. He might have been hurt by his own stick having nowhere to go with Trocheck coming between them. Maybe knocked the wind out of himself with Trochecks body pushing the stick into him? I'm not sure, but it doesn't appear there was much of an attempt to really lay into Johnny, while he was in a vulnerable position.

2 things happened after that hit that seems far worse than the hit itself.
1. That's a wicked crosscheck. A fine should be handed out. That's just too rough with the stick. That's not letting Trocheck know you didn't like the hit. That's taking advantage of a player on the ice in front of you and intentionally trying to hurt him.
2. Trocheck's face came very close to that skate blade. That could have been a far worse outcome for the game.

Sometimes players have amazing chemistry together and then, when apart, they can't find it again:

2022:
Gaudreau: 115 PTS +64
Tkachuk: 105 PTS, +57
Lindholm: 82 PTS, +61

2024 (pace for 82 GP):
Gaudreau: 58 PTS -31
Tkachuk: 95 PTS, +19
Lindholm: 50 PTS, -17

Tkachuk can hold his head high, but not so much the other two. But it goes to show the importance of having a physically imposing / aggressive player on a line.

Still one of the more bizarre FA signings in recent memory

Nothing bizarre about it.

There's two false ideas confidently spouted around here as to why this is a bizarre signing.

One, that rebuilding squads don't sign high profile players in an effort to get better. They do, all the time. They sometimes can't get anyone willing to sign there, but the team that purposefully avoids the UFA market is rare.

Two, that players mainly choose their destination based on immediate team quality. Players are people. They have a lot of things to consider. Their family needs often come before everything else. That and if you just scored 115 pts, you're probably confident that you can help whatever team you join.

He's been awesome ever since 2024 started. The talk of his demise was greatly exaggerated.
I think 1 goal in 21 games is less than awesome.

not to mention late and dirty
What do u mean by late and dirty? I’m real time it doesn’t look that late at all, but if a bit late that would be the absolute only thing I think you could call out…what else is dirty?
