2018 Brady Tkachuk/kotkaniemi
2017 Jason Robertson/poehling
2016 Adam Fox/sergachev
2015 Sebastian Aho/juulsen
2014 Brayden Point/scherbak
2013 Jake Guentzel/mccaron
2012 Filip Forsberg/galchenyuk
2011 Nikita Kucherov + Johnny Gaudreau/Beaulieu
2010 Mark Stone/tinnordi
2009 Ryan O'Reilly/LeBlanc
2008 Cam Atkinson/kristo
2006 Claude Giroux/fischer

The Canadiens are the worst drafting team in nhl history looking at who they could have had. But choosing this Austrian kid over a future hall of famer will be the worst decision in franchise history.

Unbelievable the organization is run by the biggest idiots for decades.

It really is a promising young group. Hutson too...

But when we talk about drafting for 'need' I think we needed an elite scorer. Probably more than we did on the blueline.

Again, I hope for the best. I was wrong on the Price pick. It looks like I was wrong on Shane Wright too... so hopefully I'm wrong here too. But damn, I can't remember the last time we had a shot at a franchise scorer. I really did want Mich.
The jury is still out on Wright/Slafkovsky and neither have impressed.

But yeah the need for elite scoring is something really basic that has been missing for years and years.

Management have been saying they want to build on speed and offence… but they draft the big guy and go for defence.

Unless they want to tank more (which is not the impression I have of the plan and is also probably not possible since all the kids are getting better) the will probably look for a good goaltender next. Which brings us to winning games with defence instead of offence.

"He's the slam dunk best D in the draft and has been my favorite prospect this season since probably December."

This to me is the problem. This wasn't a draft for defenseman. And the habs didn't go after the BPA. That's what is heartbreaking. We got a second pair defenseman with a 5th overall pick. That is bad asset management.
Obviously management viewed him as the BPA, you think they're using a #5 pick on what they project to be a top 4 defenseman? Just because it doesn't agree with public opinion doesn't mean it's 'wrong', but I would rather they follow their data than succumb to the public opinion that they don't agree with.

Sounds familiar, where have I seen this before-

I get what you mean but :

1) We weren't in a position to draft a player of Matthews caliber
2) Leafs still have only won 1 round of playoffs with these guys
Certainly some bad luck with timing. That’s part of it.
Gotta prioritize talent tho.

True they haven’t won but those 2 picks were hits.

you mean the same fan base that wanted Brady over stupid Bustniemi and snapped when we traded Sergachev for Drouin? Don't think we are that bad, team would be further ahead.
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. He was being called Tkabust and too slow and everything else under the sun. How'd that turn out for us...

OK, Vachon, I respect you a lot. So I would like for you to give us your best sales pitch on the guy. Why was he worth more than the Russian phenom or the other forwards that went after?
Michkov (imo) is probably a straight up head case. The amount of spin for this dude was enough to stay clear and far, which is why 2 other teams passed on him, and he landed at probably the only team that could draft him with goodwill via Ovi: Washington, in the top 10.

You think MTL wants to have no control for the next three years? Forget even the other issues, personal or otherwise. Kinda reminds me of the Cherepanov selection years ago by NYR... I think we win out with the best RHD prospect in the draft.

HF Habs absolutely did NOT want Tkachuk at the time of the draft. The vast vast majority of the posters on this board viewed him as having no offensive upside and thought he’d be nothing more than a 3rd liner. I remember this very well. Some posters even had “anyone but Tkachuk” as their signatures.

Must be nice to generalize the entire userbase, on no factoids at all? You are making things up now. C'mon man, that isn't true and you know it. A lot wanted other players not named Kotkaniemi

To me his floor is Adam Larsson and ceiling is Heiskanen
There’s no Heiskanen ceiling, people really need to stop with that. We have our offensive D in Hutson and Mailloux, so that’s fine enough, just not worth the 5th pick in this draft.

Its possible. Im not even saying it will work out but lets be honest, no one does. Thats the point. Least Dino isnt happy but being mature. He is old though lol
My pessimism is rooted in one simple statistic: you win cups with elite players. The Habs haven't had an elite F or a true 1C in my lifetime, so to witness a rebuild for the first time and see them squander those opportunities is heart wrenching.

People in here keep talking about trusting the pros. Well if you have the HockeyProspect draft manual....there's 20 pros talking and NOBODY sees him good enough to be top 5. None of THOSE pros.

It's not about the fact that he's a bad player. He's not. He's a NHL'er. Big time. But not top 5 value.

Thats fair. Maybe a PTSD effect, this team has that effect.

Maybe im just at a point where i know i cant change anything and just hope for the best.

With any luck, the team will be a trainwreck again
