Interesting that they dumped the whole staff. Cant’t say I’m not pleased. I don’t think Quinn was able to get the most out of our guys, certainly not consistently.

I think the big thing here is to be on the lookout for coaches who bring a culture of preparation and motivation, similar to Brindamour, and who have a structured grasp of Xs and Os, as well as someone who can encourage an edge from the players.

I don’t think any coach can MAKE non-physical guys play physical, but it would be interesting to see what happens if a new coach takes Kreider, Gauthier, Chytil, Laf, Kakko, Krav, KAM, etc. aside and say look, you are big, strong guys and you’re strength is what is going to help us win games, by battling hard, grinding them down, making them tired. I want to see you guys engaged out there physically. Nothing lazy or irresponsible, but if you’re on them hard every shift and you take a penalty, we’ll kill it off. I won’t ever get on you for taking a penalty if it’s because you’re out there playing hard, taking the body and battling.

Guys who are used to be afraid of being glued to the bench for a mistake. I wonder if it can free them up to play with a bit more intensity.

I'd be willing to bet that if you added up the "over physical" penalties by Smith, Lindgren and Trouba COMBINED, would add up to less than the lazy penalties that Kreider took. That says aplenty.

Did you watch Tortorella blow up Columbus? He may have set that franchise back 10 years.

Eh I think it's a combination of many players not wanting to stay in Columbus the hockey town (like Panarin and honestly PLD) and the moves that their GM has made to have to work around that.
Torts was working pretty well for them until the wheels starting coming off for various reasons. He's not without blame but I don't think he personally screwed Columbus over just because he can be a difficult coach

Same old with Torts...when you're winning he's a great coach, when you start losing it's terrible.

I just don't know if this is a team where can come in and win right away --- especially in a manner where you fine tune more experienced players.

I feel like Torts is the hard ass you bring in after the "players coach" has taken them to a certain point. Not necessarily the guy you bring in to get them to a certain point and then turn it over.

He and Babcock both scream to be the types to get your over the hump, not necessarily the type to bring you up the "on ramp."

I'm tired of the 'soft' Rangers.

I thought it started with AV... Timing also coincides with Gorton. I like to see physical brand of hockey to go along with the finesse. If Torts is one side of the spectrum and this past years team the other side.... We need to be somewhere in the middle.

I never understood all the AV hate.

Though I did understand that cutting him loose because we were entering a rebuild that we actually didn't want to win in, made sense.

Av did great things for years. By the end- i couldnt stand how soft we were and his smug gum chewing face. We had slow starts, guys weren’t responding, and he instilled a “turn the cheek” philosophy that infuriated me

What do you mean by win right away? Like SC win or make the playoffs win?

I think this roster will surprise a lot of people with proper coaching and some balancing. IMO we underachieved this season.

I don't know, outside of instilling a blue collar work ethic: I think Torts is a bad fit with these guys.

Personal preference wise, I have no interest in players blocking shots with their faces. That or stifling offensive creativity.

Grind and Grit hockey is fine when needed. But you can't sustain it over an entire season(plus playoffs).

More importantly what are all the people with names like QuinSucks, WeNeVERgetaGoodcoach, DieQuinnDie gonna do next season? Keep? Just replace Quinn's name with the new coaches name?

Typically the cycle involves switching to a player for a little bit, before switching back to the coach.

Kind of like the harvest seasons. We'll transition from TradeTrouba, RangersRsawft, KreiderSyndrome and ToffEnough, to DrearyDrury, GetRidofGallant, Babcocksu....uhh...you probably get the rest.

Of the top four teams, who should we have been better than?

Hartley and Roy are proven winners and have ties to Drury.

I'd welcome them both. Roy wanting to get back into the NHL, has won in the Q and experience with youngins...

Hartley Roy would be a good start to a coaching staff IMO.
Hartley is about as strict defensive "no nonsense" as there is. If a young player under performs or is off Hartley WILL bench him. Personally I like Hartley but I have a feeling you will be losing it on this guy within 20 games.

DrearyDrury probably will have some legs. That's a good one, stealing.

I'm personally was hoping Knoublach was in the mix, if not the other options are what they are. But

I want NO part of Babcock.

Been saying this for a few months now, regardless the roster was not good enough for playoffs this year no matter how hard we tried. Even NEXT there is no guarantee we are top 8 in the East.

The next draft will feature kids born in the year 2003.

Hartley's coaching resume dating back to that time includes being fired by the Avs, Thrashers and Flames after missing the playoffs 6 out of 8 full seasons.

Whatever charmed life he lived through the 2001 season has not been apparent for an NHL club in a long, long time.
