You're answering your own question. It was not a team. It was bunch of individuals who did brilliant things individually more so than playing a successful team game.
I've been saying that all season. We are led by and rely upon 'great individual' performances.

To some extent you don't have to be a top team int he league to win the cup, just the team that plays the hottest in the playoffs

but yeah this team probably isn't a hot streak in the playoffs away from the cup yet

Part of me wonders if we flip the Islanders and Devils cluster if the perception is different, but I can't say that any of what I saw was unexpected --- especially down the stretch with some guys out.

Seems like one of Gallant, Torts, Hartley or Tocchet will be the guy.

Gallant is the People's Choice and apparently the Rangers as well according to Uncle Larry. Not sure how I feel about that considering his unceremonious exits from FLA & LV despite the success.

Torts i really think could work. He doesn't really coach the "Black and Blueshirts" style he had the first go around. The key would be having Panarin on his side. If the star buys in the rest of the team will fall in order. At least we know they'd be tough to play against.

Hartley i could take or leave. Not really a sexy name, similar personality to Torts, and at that point you might as well go with the guy you know can have success here. Drury connection is an x factor.

Tocchet would be ok. Won the Cup as an assistant in PIT and didnt exactly have an easy situation in Arizona with the Front Office turmoil. Wouldnt be my top choice, but they could definitely do worse.

I think Trouba getting injured really put the Rangers back on their heels and was a huge blow to their defense in general. Miller wasn't ready to carry a pairing himself, the third pairing was a disaster most nights, and Fox and Lindgren could only do so much (then of course Lindgren got injured too) , and it robbed the Rangers of a big part of that grit they had
It's not great when losing one guy can do that but I think is also an indication of the inexperience and holes the team does need to fill

I think some of that is the precariousness of the roster we had.

Trouba, for as much shit as he gets, serves a vital role on this team. Zibanejad is a keystone player. There's a reason we pay for Panarin's offense.

If someone came on these boards last October and said you're going to start a lineup that includes Smith, Hajek, Bitetto, Rooney, Howden, PDG and Blackwell, I don't know how many people wouldn't be expecting an unpleasant night of hockey.

I would be more concerned if this presented as the final vision of what we'd been building since the letter. I never took it as being even remotely close to that last season.

You keep hearing about the changes that were needed. I don't think anyone is really arguing against that. That's never been the debate.

Typically the cycle involves switching to a player for a little bit, before switching back to the coach.

Kind of like the harvest seasons. We'll transition from TradeTrouba, RangersRsawft, KreiderSyndrome and ToffEnough, to DrearyDrury, GetRidofGallant, Babcocksu....uhh...you probably get the rest.
I'm laughing so hard that my appendix hurts lmaoooo

Also frustrating to me that the former front office made it very clear they were unhappy with the "grit" of the team and wanted to change that, including drafting guys like Schneider and Culle, but after being booted everyone is acting like a soft team was what Gorton and Davidson wanted.

they knew it was an issue and they wanted to fix it, last offseason just wasn't a good one to try to fix it during

e: I mean hell that's a huge reason they traded for and signed Trouba.

I prefer: BABsucksCOCK

I think there were many different flaws, and many things that were the epitome of stap-gap or work-in-progress.

There were nights I thought this team gave glimpses into the future, and there were nights they looked like they didn't know the answers to the quiz.

I think another coach probably would've gotten more from some areas, less from others, but the overall product would've been eerily similar.

I think there were things Quinn could've and should've done, things DQ might've done, and some bounces that I wish I went our way earlier in the year.

But overall, I don't think what I saw was dramatically different than what I expected and more or less predicted.

Once again, completely disagree. There were many winnable games where coaching could have or would have played the difference.

Maybe that's where we differ. Your over arching expectations were met. I had no expectations going into the season., What I experienced on a far too often basis? Under performing, poor teamwork and coaching. My issue with Quinn was never about the individual player. It's how everything came together.

TBH I thought everything was going well until Covid.

Maybe Assistant Coach and Assistant GM ?

At the very least it will be very entertaining to watch Roy fill both roles. We will witness the first ever trade of a player who pissed Roy off, to a team who the Rangers are literally on the ice with.

Nobody mentioned Knobloch.....if I was at Saratoga and the odds for Knobloch was 75 to 1.............. I would put a Hundy on him
I feel like the overall MO right now is “get leadership”. I don’t think Knoblauch is that guy. He may be a good coach and be well-respected. But he’s not commanding the room, is my impression. I don’t think he’s the direction the Rangers will be going right now. He might be considered for an assistant position, though.

I get what you're going for with the last one, but it sounds more like a fan than a critic. So if Babcock were hired, and the board became divided again, the supporters wouldn't be called Quinn Bros but ...

Does he think he has an inside info or just that since Torts has a history here it's possible

As for Babcock...I think there's a very big question about how good a coach he really is and how much he benefited from being gifted a talented Red Wings team and Leafs team with a huge amount of talent as well.
But it's a huge issue that many former players have spoken out about how he treated them. It's one thing to be the hardass coach that players don't like but will play for, it's another to be the coach that players actually hate and don't want to play for because of how awful he is towards them. That is the risk with Babock...he has done some really shitty things to players that go beyond "I'm a hardass uniting the players against me"

Don said yesterday on the show that Dolan really loves Torts and has a great relationship with him. Seems like that's why that connection is coming up.

Truth be told, I really can't say I am broken up about losing Quinn. I think the timing is little iffy for me, but I really can't say the news of DQ being let go disappointed me.

I will admit that the Gorton and JD thing I do disagree with pretty strongly.

You have to be careful with the "we don't want a retread" frame of mind. That was the exact thought behind hiring Quinn.

The reason the league recycles the same ~35 coaches is because making the jump to the NHL is hard.

I'm not saying definitely get a veteran coach, but understand what a rookie candidate is going to do on the ice and how he's going to address our issues. Don't just say "well this is new therefore it's good!"

I know that seems obvious but I feel like Quinn got the job because he had the right optics. Young coach, good attitude, humble (opposite of AV), refreshing. Turns out he didn't have an NHL system to go with it.

Of the top four teams, who should we have been better than?
What if I said the Isles?

What would you say was the main difference between the teams?

I am no Quinn hater, but the results bear out. Yes we're younger... yes we have less "physical" players... but that team is playing more than the sum of their parts. Why?
