I'm guessing Martin was laid off for a clean slate. I hope the new coach will consider bringing him back though. He was a panacea for our defense this year. But perhaps the new coach can do better so <shrug>
The Rangers have really not had any karma with coaching. Keenan wins the cup, immediately bounces. I think Torts is the only bonafide top coach we've had in ages (and he should have been promoted over freaking Ron Low!). AV made the finals with us and Vancouver but I cringe giving him a "top" coach title. DQ first time in NHL. I think Colin Campbell got his first HC gig after Keenan bounced. An out of touch John Muckler, hand written application disaster Bryan Trottier, confused Ron Low. Tom Renney wasn't too bad. Like DQ, I think he served his purpose. Like Panarin, Renney had Jagr.
Keenan had more to do with Keenan than karma.

Babcock is a nightmare imo. Worst case scenario along with Roy. Narcissistic bully who rode multiple hall of fame players into a good reputation

But would he make our kids better and have us play better as a team?

Probably. At the same time, we should get the best guy for the job, not just someone that would be better than whomever he replaces.

I like the job Martin did, but as the season wore on, it became apparent that Lindgren-Fox was our only pair that's consistently good.

I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that most coaches get that result.

Agreed, our third D pairing was a total disaster and nothing DQ or Martin should get blamed for.

Got to say, Hajak is one of the biggest disappointments for me.

—Outside of our division, many succesfull teams plays a man-man defense and many coaches out there are clear man-man guys. Babcock is one, Bruce B another. Do we really want to go back to that? It’s a minus for me.

I REALLY dislike man on man defense schemes.

And that's not because they are ineffective. They are extremely effective with the right personnel. But that's the key... you need to have 6 d-men and at least 2 forwards on the ice at any given moment that can skate well enough to stick with their man, or have the hockey IQ necessary to know when to switch off with another person on the ice.

Injuries, lack of depth, or just inopportune line changes leave you exposed.

You can't have guys like Smith, Johnson, Girardi, Staal out there playing man on man defense. It's a losing proposition.

One thing, as a rule, I would prefer the next coach be an ex player that just retired over a coach from juniors/the AHL 24/7.

The NHL is so far ahead the leagues around it at the moment that coaches outside the league could be really risky to bring in. These things goes in waves, sometimes the NHL has become too conservative and fallen behind things so that coaches used to more open play outside the NHL can have an advantage if winds are blowing in that direction. But that is certainly not the case vs the AHL and also the junior leagues.

Hartley and Roy are proven winners and have ties to Drury.

I'd welcome them both. Roy wanting to get back into the NHL, has won in the Q and experience with youngins...

Hartley Roy would be a good start to a coaching staff IMO.

Hajek is one I was right about early, not that I wanted to be.

The red flag for me is that when it comes to production, the guy would die of thirst in a river.

I know there's such a thing as defensive defensemen, but if you can defend well and play big minutes, you score by accident.

Ryan Lindgren was on pace for almost 30 points.

I don’t know honestly but I get the sense his aptitude is more a result of having a handful of the best players ever for their peaks. He went to Toronto, didn’t do much and was fired

Roy’s a loon. We need character and leaders on the ice and in the room, he’s the opposite. Just compounds an issue that’s already there

Ditto on Hajek . Big believer in some dmen Needing to take time to really develop but just don’t see it in his game like we saw in the world juniors.
We all knew that not every player in the talented dmen Prospect pool would work out. He seems to be in the minus category

The challenge with someone like Babcock is that his MO coming in is that he needs players closer to their peak in order to make the most of his approach. He's not going to have that here.

We're not necessarily looking at a revolution here. Even with trades and moves, this is still going to be a VERY young team. That doesn't necessarily play to the strengths of quite a few names we see out there.

I just have one thing to say:

Quinn was below mediocre. A good coach, but not NHL level yet. Par for the course so I don't hold that against him. It's a below average "sports" league (pure entertainment) so you can't as a fan ask for more if your standards are just to be entertained. At least he wasn't abysmal like Vigneault was, that's a relief. But holding the fort? Not adequate. He needs more experience.

Can I for the 254th time ask why no NHL franchise asks one of many upstanding coaches in Europe to take the job who have done great things with not much quality on their roster? I know why. Because it's not about coaching skill and it's about the lingering existence of xenophobia. No Euro refs, no Euro coaches. Euro players and even coaches is just fine by now, apparently, because of the results. But coaches and refs? Apparently not just good enough. What a joke.

It's about who you know and all shenanigans not having anything to do with the performance of the job. Still, I think it was great NYR had the guts to step out of the archaic bubble of old geezers doing their structural thing over and over again with less than fortunate results, over and over again.

I have regained some of my respect for Dolan, even if his touch is a bit narcissistic and his timing isn't that great. He still cleaned the house. I have go give him that. BUT, now I only wait for the next inadequate coach to step in who can't do the job, as per the ordinary NHL order.

Agreed What’s the fascination with Roy?

He's a fiery personality. Something we desperately need. He's been coaching kids for a while. I'm also talking about an assistant, not the head coach.

I was just going to post this. Babcock is THE X and O's guy. An excellent tactician.

But he needs a team thats well into its development to get the most out of him.

You also need a team that has entrenched leadership.
