Keep in mind a couple of things.

Zuccarello in a vacuum is worth more. With Stone and Nyquist still out on the market, his value was lower. With the way he handled himself in the first half of the season, he tanked his own value. Yeah, yeah. He turned it around. Let’s not forget that in seasons where they were bad early on, Gaborik and Vanek went for about the same.

The last few weeks, we all should’ve been ratcheting down our expectations. This isn’t crazy far off from where I thought we’d end up, and the conditions are surprising.

I will say that I felt Zucc was worth a late first, but the market felt otherwise.

Part of me wonders how much last year influenced this year. Last year, there were teams that gave up picks and prospects and didn’t make it out of the second round and then lost the player they acquired to boot.

Not for nothing, but you don’t put a condition on a pick that he’ll resign elsewhere if you expect to sign him yourself on July 1.

It may turn out that way, but I doubt it.

The Rangers traded Zuccarello to a team which would give them the highest 2nd round pick. The expected return was a 2nd round pick & a prospect which wasn't going to be a great prospect. The other teams will have lower 2nd's in the draft. Calgary,Nashville, etc.

If Dallas doesn't make the WCF this season or the playoffs, the Rangers can use that 2nd to move up. They did it last year with the Jersey pick for Miller.

Zuccarello signing in Dallas is up to Zuccarello. The Stars have needed secondary scoring for at least a couple of years. He will play with some really high end players. Produce. Help the Stars make the playoffs and go from there. Texas is a no state income tax state.

There are so many players available this year. Not that many last year.

Great take RangerBoy, should be stickied! ;)

No need to trash Gorton on this one. If there was a 1st to be had, he would have had it. No option to wait.

I don’t like Dallas chances, too many vets up front. But who knows, Zucc should be a good add.

Good that the resigning condition refers to the 2020 first. That pick could have potential, veteran forward group, issues with management etc. They do OK and resign Zucc, next year they get some injuries and fall through. Zucc=for a lottery pick?

the longer im on this board the more i realize that us Ranger fans and yes that includes me over value some of our players.

I'm not an armchair GM, I'm a hockey fan. I value a player based on how they play for the Rangers.

I don't like this trade. I don't think Gorton is interested in re-signing Zucc and I don't see how the draft picks are going to make an impact over the next 3 to 5 years.

I'll always root for the Rangers, but it's getting harder and harder to really care about the individual players on the team.

It is 2019. People get outraged over everything. They have nothing better to do. We live in an outrage culture to be honest.

Yes true most are sad on Twitter though including myself. But if Dallas can get chemistry going they can be dangerous and advance 2 rounds for sure in playoffs - I feel they are kind of underrated in NHL. Although it`s an experienced team so I think at least one condition is within reach which is a 1st pick. But I highly doubt Zucc resign in Dallas based on cap reasons, and now it cost too much consider his agent contract length and a 1st conditional pick.

If Dallas resign Zucc and they miss the PO's in 2020 the 1st will not be lottery protected, right?

No it`s not protected otherwise it would say so - so the upside is really high if one of the conditions hit homerun in Rangers view.

Value is fair. If zucc didn't sulk at the beginning of the year the rangers could have gotten more. Zucc played well for the rangers, but this is what a rebuild is going to look like. I only wish he could have gone to a team that had a better chance at the cup than the Stars, that's where we did him kinda dirty.

Dallas is a wildcard team. They are not going to make the WCF. I thought Zucc would have a better trade value but he wasn't playing too well the first half of the season so maybe that hurt his value? I expected a guaranteed 2019 1st and a conditional 2020 2nd and/or prospect... at least something better than even Grabner got last year.

My problem with this trade is if this was the best offer I don’t see the need to have made it today instead of waiting closer to the deadline.

And the two conditions are exceedingly unlikely. Dallas probably has around a 8% chance to make the WCF. And I’d give the second condition 0% chance since it doesn’t make sense for them to sign him with it costing a first.

doesn't that happen almost every season? Nothing is ever guaranteed. Even Rangers had plenty of bad deadline acquisitions like Clowe who we basically traded for 2nd, 3rd, and 5th which is more than we got for Zucc.

totally agree, our GM got outclassed really badly on this one. I don't believe he couldn't get a late 1st straight up or 2 2nds and a prospect.

Omg that is horrible. Why even have that conditional first if he resigns, why would Dallas ever do that?

All this season was for nothing. Our top prospects look a step closer to bust/mediocre, most current and future trade assets lost value. Zucc was struggling in the beginning so instead of trading him then they have him play top line put up points and then trade him for a garbage return.

2 possible reasons:

1. it was something insisted by Dallas and Gorton is dumb
2. it was insisted by Gorton in order to have better chances to re-sign Zucc in the summer.

No way does Dallas make the conference finals and no way do they re-sign him and lose a first overall pick. As much as I don’t like the return, Dallas is stupid for making this deal. It’ll cost them 2 picks to rent him for a month and miss the playoffs altogether. This trade is bad all around
Also they lock up two firsts which means they can’t use them them for more trades.

That’s the spirit :D
