Re-signing Zuccarello isnt their only move. They need to fix that defense too, and they know re-signing Zuccarello also costs them a first.

Easier said than done.

Outside of EK, the D options are pretty crappy on the UFA market.

When the dust settles with the forward market, Zucc is going to look pretty appealing to them.

If Dallas doesn't make the playoffs, there's a chance they win the lottery or get a top 3 pick. Then it's in the 32-35 range.

Rangers could in theory pick 5x in the top 35 once they trade Hayes and if TBL wins the Cup.

The lottery only effects their pick in the 1st.

No, it doesn’t work that way for the 2nd round.

@EdJovanovski

I believe the trend started with George McPhee because his initials matched those of general manager. GMGM. It was the wrong thing to do but a fun way to do it.

Ultimately give it a B-B+.

Floor of the Grabner trade is a bit disappointing but pretty fair overall. Yes there is upside for more, but decently long odds on that.

I’ll be honest it boggles my mind that Dzingel went for more. Yes he is younger. Yes he is having a year. But I’m skeptical.

It is also tough to stomach when viewed through the lens of past NYR deadline deals. I won’t lie. Staal and Smith particularly. But we are clearly in a new era (that doesn’t benefit the NYR, surprise!) and that is more an indictment on past decisions than a referendum on this one.

No players coming back, no prospects? Just to lousy 2nd round picks is Garbage!
That doesn't answer the question. If he got a package of players and prospects, do you really think they would have received anyone worth anything? Were you expecting the NHL's version of the Herschel Walker trade? For the last 3 weeks the guys on tsn, sportsnet, basically anyone with legit access to info was saying the price for Zucc would be a 2nd and a low to mid level prospect. He got a 2nd and a 3rd (which has the same value as a low to mid level prospect, maybe more) plus a few conditions attached that could improve the deal and you are complaining?

This trade reaffirms to me that Gorton is the man for the job. Dude just traded Zuccarello for picks. Stone cold, man. He don’t give a single **** about the fans feelings. It’s great.
Not disagreeing here but I will say that’s a bold move Cotton.

Because if those picks turn out to be McIlraths he won’t be here long. That has NOTHING to do w Zucc or heart or fans etc.

But if u parlay assets into vapor you’re not keeping your job

This is such a weak declaration. Easy to be a whiny *****.

Solid return with a legitimate chance to hit on either pick.

Based on our track record with 2nd round picks since 2010, I'm not sure about that.

Thomas, Nieves, Halverson and Gropp were all giant whiffs and we missed out on some damn good players drafted after them.

I’m surprised the conditional 2020 first doesn’t have any protections on it. Makes it extremely unlikely/risky for the Stars to resign him. They’re pretty much a bubble team every year and some good/bad luck in the lottery could turn that pick into top-3 in 2020.

Unlikely, but wonder if Rangers are hoping to bring zucc back and want to reduce competition to sign him in the offseason from the only other nhl team he’s familiar with
