GMJG kinda screwed Zucc over. Don't think he is all that confident Dal will go deep, and Zucc succeeds there. Then he is hedging Zucc to come back in July with his tail between his legs asking for a lesser deal. And he gets two cheap picks out of it.

Zucc screwed himself by becoming UFA.

moderately disappointed because the return is almost certainly a 2nd and 3rd...really thought we could have done better. i guess there's a reasonable chance the stars go on a run and make the WCF but even then it's a late 1st. The 2020 pick is a bit of a puzzle why we'd even entertain, i don't think anyone expects him to resign in dallas. i've always liked gorton but btw this and the tampa deal last year...i guess i just expected more. feels a bit like we're getting worked by the buyers after getting worked by the sellers just a couple years ago. We'll see w/ the picks but, and this is just a personal thought, i've been very perplexed by our 2/3/4 round picks the last couple years. 1st/5th/6th round have been ok...but those mid rounds have had abysmal returns..definitely adds to my apprehension of this return

Yeah but you are effectively bargaining against yourself then. If that’s the case then he knows the most he can get is a 1st and 3rd.

But acknowledging the possibility that Zuccarello won’t return increases his value to Dallas. Asking for insurance reflects a perception of risk — the risk of Zuccarello not coming back to NY in the summer.

So break this into two components: the value component (the second rounder) and the insurance component (conditionality on the third rounder). That makes him more valuable to Dallas — which allows you to increase your demand on the value component. As for the other leg? You win no matter what. It’s almost an arbitrage for us.

Now that he’s been officially traded, there’s a less than zero chance he comes back in the summer.

Zuccarello for sure took this personally (and he had a right to) but at the end of the day, that’s the business

Yep. It is very frustrating to look at a list of players that were drafted our 2nd round picks since 2010 (Thomas, Nieves, Halverson and Gropp).

Toffoli, Zucker, Gostisbehere, Klingberg, Slavin, Anderson, Murray, Hellebuyck, Point, Arvidsson, Gallagher, Parayko, Athanasiou.

Huge whiffs like that add up and one of the main reasons we are in the position we are.

edit: and there are some players drafted after Lindblom that are already trending up in a huge direction like Durzi, Addison and Madden

Ok let's pretend there were no conditionals.

And we take reality into account.

Zuccarello as a rental trade for a 2nd this year and a 3rd next year.

What else were we getting for him?
I never get into debates of this sort. They're pointless to me. I'm sitting here in my easy chair typing away on an internet forum while gorton is the one faxing/encrypt emailing documentation to agents and the league office. He makes the moves, I don't know what's going on in his head. I only pontificate about things after the fact. No offense

isn't it against the CBA to discuss trade and resign? like a form of tampering? I'm guessing it's between GMJG and Zucc's agent and the stories that were coming out mentioned that GMJG did not like the term of contract Zucc's agent was seeking (5 years)

they can't have a secret deal in place but there is no way that the cba can prevent a conversation along the lines of 'listen mats we all love you here but you know the situation we are in and we need to get the assets. but we'd be opening to discussing bringing you back over the summer if you'd be interested'

The sun, the moon and the stars. We were clearly getting Tolvanen for him but Gorton decided to pass up the deal.

I think I would have preferred two 2nds, cond 1st if resigning over the 2nd, 3rd and possibility of two 1st picks. Stars in the WCF is suuuuch a long shot. I also hate rooting for teams in the playoffs solely based on these damn trade conditionals. I hate that I feel compelled to root for Tampa just because of th e McD trade.

Sportsnet is reporting Rangers are interested Logan Stanley from the Jets in a Hayes deal.

Stanley and a 1st for Hayes?

2 1st rounders.

Certainly not the prospect I'd target from the Jets. That said, I heard he's played very well in Manitoba. Not a point producer.

1. Takes a Stanley to win the Stanley?
2. Already with a Ranger jersey on
3. 6'7 240? Bruce Graham called. (UGH).

I miss Slats doing trades. UFA signings hell no, but trades definitely.
