I’m surprised the conditional 2020 first doesn’t have any protections on it. Makes it extremely unlikely/risky for the Stars to resign him. They’re pretty much a bubble team every year and some good/bad luck in the lottery could turn that pick into top-3 in 2020.

The most likely scenario is that the Stars are one and done and Nill is fired and the next GM will have no loyalty to the Zuccarello acquisition and will certainly want to start over with his first round pick. Or use it to acquire a better talent.

I mean, the Stars clearly don't value Zuccarello has worthy of giving up their 2019 first round pick for. Barring a ridiculous 1.5 PPG Conn Smythe run they wouldn't view him as being worth their 2020 first round pick either.

Not disagreeing here but I will say that’s a bold move Cotton.

Because if those picks turn out to be McIlraths he won’t be here long. That has NOTHING to do w Zucc or heart or fans etc.

But if u parlay assets into vapor you’re not keeping your job
Zucc is a 30+ year old pending UFA. What did we really expect? Maybe they didn’t like the prospects Dallas and others were willing to part with?

Rebuilds aren’t easy. There isn’t a roadmap. You win some, you lose some.

The way you all are acting, it’s as if he just traded Zibanejad for a bag of pucks. Oh wait, how did we get Zibby in the first place..

I sort of expected either a single low first or a 2nd+Rykov type deal.

But the late market moves with guys going at above expected prices raised my expectations. I was hoping a 2+2+small add or a 1+mid level prospect.

Of course, if Zucc ends up resigning I'll be singing a completely different tune. But for now I'm going to root for Dallas to miss the playoffs, because I think the odds of them passing the 2nd round are so low.

For Kevin Hayes, I'm still holding out hope for a big haul.

I mean, the basis everyone was expecting was a 2nd and a decent prospect so this isn’t too far off. Not to mention that 2nd will be a middle of the round 2nd in all likelihood and not a late 2nd.

I’m not expecting the conditions to be met but never know. I’m a bit underwhelmed given that Zucc was heating up the past month or two and that Duchene trade kind of wiped the market a little in terms of targets for teams but overall it’s pretty much in line with what we always expected. Now let’s hope the Stars go on a run here and re-sign Zucc. And let’s hope the Stars go into the tank next season too.

Yeah I'm not gonna sit back thinking the Rangers got one or two firsts out of this. It'll most likely be a 2nd and a 3rd....

Only two positives I can see is that the 2nd could be a higher end 2nd and if Zucc somehow resigns over the summer, then the Rangers essentially got free picks!!

In reality, the should've kept him, sign him and made him Captain next year for the youngin's. This is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

One saving grace is that Dallas has been rumored to be interested in Zucc for a while now. Maybe there’s a chance they really go hard for a long-term deal.

I hope so. He may flourish on that team.
Benn, Seguin, Radulov, Zuccarello. They might want to lock him in with those guys.

I'd rather have the conditions than guaranteed picks. This whole rebuild is going to partially come down to some luck factor being involved. Rangers just increased there chance at getting lucky. It's not like the playoffs never has some lower seed make a two round run. The West this year does not have a Tampa running away with the regular season. Not like an extra guaranteed 2nd or some B level prospect was going to not require luck for that to work.

Zuuc wants to stay in New York. Because of his status with the fans he probably didnt want to sign for one of the other two teams. These last months has showed him that it is all buisiness. He is gonna be a Devil. They are claering out players to sign UFAS.

No way does Dallas make the conference finals and no way do they re-sign him and lose a first overall pick. As much as I don’t like the return, Dallas is stupid for making this deal. It’ll cost them 2 picks to rent him for a month and miss the playoffs altogether. This trade is bad all around

I think the other thing that makes this trade look so bad is the returns we got last year.
Grabner got a 2nd and Rykov which is sort of like a 2nd and a 3rd but we all believe Zucc to be a superior player to Grabner but I guess the reality is there are too many sellers this year. Still it hurts seeing Dzingel get two 2nds and Duclair. I could have gone along with two 2nds and Nuke. Maybe not Nuke you get the idea. The unlikely upside is just not very appealing in comparison to the other returns.

2019 draft

Dallas: We'd like to extend Zucc, we've talked and can work something out, but that 1st?

Rangers: Let's talk

I just don’t really see a scenario in which a rebuilding team doesn’t at least try to get something for players on expiring contracts, especially when a player will be 32 years old next season.

The funny thing is that’s exactly the type of scenario this board complained about for years.

Just got off work and looked at my phone. Pretty underwhelming return for a consistent 55 point player. If that was the best offer we should have re-signed him. Might change my tune if one or both of the conditions are met, but right now this seems like a pretty bad trade.

He really didn't go for that much more though. The 3rd in the Rangers deal and the 2nd in the Jackets deal are both 2020 while the other 2nd is 2021 and the Rangers 2nd is 2019. Picks in future years always have less value. Not to mention Duclair is basically worthless at this point. He could have been signed by anyone in the offseason, is on team number 5 now, and his former head coach just ripped him to shreds this past week like no other player I've seen in recent memory. Dzingel and Zuccarello are on pace for similar point production over 82 games with Dzingel being younger and already hitting the 20 goal plateau this season. It may seem like more but it really isn't and the Rangers trade (albeit relatively slim) has the chance to improve.
